Description

(No-Model.)
G. SOHULER.
LID FOR CANS AND BUGKETS.
No. 307,230. (x Patented Oct. 28, 1884.
EZ ZZ/ INVENTOR (/OZ/(M ATTORNEYS N. PETERS Pholauho n hur. wnhin mn. D411 Units STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES SOHULER, OF NEXV YORK, N. Y.
mo FOR CANS AND BUCKETS.
SPECIFICATION forming part 01 Letters Patent No. 307,230, dated October 28, 1884.
Application filed August 11, 1884. fNo model.)
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, CHARLES SCHULER, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lids for Cans and Buckets, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has reference to an improved cover or lid for ash and garbage cans, slopbuckets, pails, and similar articles, in which a disinfecting and deodorizing action is desired; and the invention consists of a lid for cans and buckets that is hermetically sealed to the can and provided with a disinfectingchamber covered by a wire screen and filled with sponge or other absorbent material that serves as a carrier for the disinfecting or deodorizing material. A central opening of the lid is closed by a detachable screw-cap for the purpose of cleaning the absorbent material and resupplying it from time to time with disinfecting material.
I11 the accompanying drawings',Figure 1 rep resents a vertical central section of an ash-can with my improved lid. Fig. 2 is a side elcvation of a slop-bucket with my lid; Fig. 3, a vertical central section of the same, and Fig. 4 a detail vertical transverse section showing the packing for the lid.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
A in the drawings represents an ash-can, slop-bucket, or other vessel of suitable size, which is intended to receive ashes, garbage, slops, or other substances. The can or bucket A is closed by a lid, B, the flanged rim of whichis fitted hermetically to the can or bucket A by means of a rubber or other packing. a, at the upper end of the can, said packing being retained by the inwardly-bent edge of the rim 2) and the edge of the can-body, as shown clearly in Fig. at. The flanged and packed rim is riveted to the body of the can or bucket and forms a tight fit for the lid B.
It is obvious that the packing maybe arranged on the lid; also, that any other suit able means for paekingmaybe used. In largesized cans the packing for the lid maybe dispensed with. The lid B has a raised middle portion and handles, (Z (Z, at diametrically-opposite points, by which it is attached to or removed l'rom the bodyof the vessel A. At the under side of the lid B is formed a disinfect ing-chamber, G, by means of a wire screen, D, said chamber being filled with sponge or other suitable absorbent material, which is sup plied with a disinfecting or deodorizing substance-as, for instance, a solution of earbolie acid. The wire screen D is soldered or otherwise attached to the under side of the lid. Th wide meshes of the screen D admit the free evaporation of the disinfectant, so as to neutralize the obnoxious fumes from the can or bucket. At the center of the lid B is arranged an opening, which is closed by a detachable screw-cap, f, which opening serves for the purpose of supplying the disinfectant to the sponge of the disinfecting chamber 0, and also for cleaning the sponge from time to time by allowing water to pass through the same.
By the use of the disinfeetinglid the obnoxious smells emanating from garbage-cans, slop'buckets, and similar vessels are'effectively neutralized, and the deleterious influence of the decaying organic matter in said cans obviated.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent A lid for cans and buckets provided at the under side with a di sin fecting-chamber formed by a wire screen and filled with an absorbing material containing the disinfectant, said chamber having a supply-opening and a dc tachable-eap, substantially as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
CHARLES SOHULER. \Vitnesses:
