Description

I. PANES BRASSIERE Jan. 8, 1957 Filed Feb. 14, 1955 INVENTOR ZS zcZaPe Panes ATTORNEYS United States Patent BRASSIERE Isidore Panes, New York, N. Y.
Application February 14, 1955, Serial No. 487,864
4 Claims. (Cl. 2-42) This invention relates to a brassiere and closely analogous foundation garments.
The principal object of the present invention is the provision of a garment of the indicated character which, by virtue of novel means applied thereto, enables adjustments to be made regarding the figure and bust size of the garment, instead of resorting to quantity production of the usual A, B and C size garments.
In accordance with the above mentioned object of the invention, the amount of tension and stretch at different sections of a garment may be varied at will, whereby a single garment may be used to conform in measurements to the different conventional figure and bust sizes mentioned, so that a reduced stock of garments may be kept on hand, and also that a purchaser of a garment may make adjustments in the garment to compensate for changes in measurements as to size to attain a proper fit of the garment.
An embodiment of the present invention is illustrated by way of example in the accompanying drawing, in which Fig. 1 is a view looking at the inside of a brassiere embodying the invention, some portions being broken away.
Fig. 2 is a front or outside view of the brassiere.
Fig. 3 is an enlarged fragmentary sectional view, the section being taken on the line 33 of Fig. 1 and looking in the direction indicated by the arrows.
Fig. 4 is a fragmentary sectional perspective view, the section being taken on the line 4-4 of Fig. 1 and looking the direction indicated by the arrows.
The brassiere or like garment may be diversely fabricated, but its body encircling band 10 essentially includes bust cups or pockets 11, and elastic inserts or sections 12 having a one-way stretch in a lateral direction so as to tension the band 10 when the garment is being worn; and to enable adjustments to be made regarding the length of the band 10. The sections 12 inthe present instance have their opposite side edges seamed as at 13 to the adjacent edges respectively of inelastic side sections 5 and an inelastic central section 6 of the band 10, so as to be located below the bust pockets 11 respectively with the upper edges of the sections 12 free of said pockets and disposed above the lower edges of the pockets, as indicated most clearly in Fig. 4. The pockets 11 are arranged above the central section 6 and are integral therewith,
By reason of the structural arrangement of the elastic sections 12, the band is tensioned in use; the sections 12 may stretch laterally; and the fullness of the bust pockets 11 may be increased or decreased within the limits of the amount of stretch of the sections 12.
In accordance with the main improvement to a garment of the indicated character by the present invention, use is made of similar pieces or panels 14 of inelastic fabric, there being one of these panels for each of the elastic sections 12. Each of the panels 14 is substantially triangular in shape. These panels 14 are arranged broadside at the inside of the pockets 11 respectively. One edge of each of the panels 14 extends 01' runs from the 2,776,432 Patented Jan. 8, 1957 top to the bottom of the related pocket 11 at approximately the center thereof, and said edge is stitched to the material of the pocket as at 15, The small end portion 16 of each panel 14 remote from the stitched edge 15 is folded and stitched for strength. Each panel 14 extends across the respective elastic section 12. A tab 17 is provided for each panel 14, said tab having one end secured to the respective side section 5 of the band 10. Separable cooperative fastener elements are attached to the tab 17 and its panel 14. In the present instance, the tab 17 has a plurality of eyelets 18 in spaced relation to each other, and the end portion 16 has a hook 19 attached thereto which is engageable in any one of said eyelets 18, for the purpose of limiting or varying the amount of stretch of the respective elastic section 12.
It will now be understood that by varying the amount of stretch of the elastic sections 12, the body and bust size of the garment may be altered to conform to the conventional small size A, medium size B, and large size C. As shown in Fig. 3, the hooks 19 are engaged in the particular eyelets 18 respectively for the C adjustment or large size. Obviously, the other mentioned adjustments may be attained by engaging the hooks 19 in the particular appropriate eyelets 18. The length of the band 10 may be increased or decreased as required, attended by more or less slack in the panels 14 for a corresponding change in the size of the bust pockets 11 regarding fullness.
In order to serve as a protection to the wearers busts, there are provided panels 21 of sheet felt or like material which cover the tabs 17, eyelets 18 and the hooks 19, but afford easy access thereto. Each of the panels 21 is stitched along three of its edges to the band 10, one arcuate edge of the panel being free. Thus the panels 21 as secured to the band 10 actually form pockets for the tabs, eyelets and hooks.
Since certain changes may be made in the construction and different embodiments of the invention could be made, it is to be understood that such changes and embodiments as come within the scope of the appended claims may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention.
I claim:
1. In a foundation garment, a body band having an inelastic central section, inelastic side sections and laterally stretchable sections, said stretchable sections being interposed between said side sections, respectively, and said central section, and panels of inelastic fabric arranged on the inside of the band and extending across said stretchable sections respectively, each of said panels having one end connected with the respective side section and its opposite end secured to said central section, so that said panels limit the amount of stretch of the stretchable sections, for the purpose of adjusting the size of the garment.
2. In a brassiere, a body band having an inelastic central section, inelastic side sections and laterally stretchable sections, said central section on the top thereof having bust pockets integral therewith and also integral with said side sections respectively, said stretchable sections being interposed between said side sections, respectively, and said central section, and inelastic panels on the inside of the band extending crosswise in relation to said stretchable sections respectively, each of said panels having one end connected with the respective side section and its opopsite end edge stitched to the adjacent bust pocket, so that said panels limit the amount of stretch of the stretchable sections, for the purpose of adjusting the size of the brassiere.
3. In a brassiere as set forth in claim 2, wherein said stretchable sections are located below said bust pockets respectively and whose upper edges are free from the respective bust pockets.
4. In a brassiere as setforth in claim 2, wherein each of-- said panels is-connected with the respective side section by a tab on the side section, and separable cooperative fastener means on the panel and said tab.
