This invention relates to an improved carpet cutting device and has special reference 'to a specially constructed device for cutting excess carpet when it is desired to lay the same one floor or the like.

Various types of cutting devices have been olfered to the'carpet industry and the public, all of which have some value attached to them, but the time involved in their operation, the confusion connected therewith and, most importantly, the fact that the operator has no proof of accuracy in knowing the carpet is being out straight or to the suitable form desired make them of little value.

The primary object of the present invention is the provision of a carpet cutting device that is provided with means for guidin the cutter against the wall of the room on the floor of which the carpet is to be laid, whereby the finished cut carpetwill conform to the shape of the floor plan of the room.

Another object of the present invention is to form the cutter of a horizontal plate having the wall guide on one side portion thereof and to form a slot through the plate for receiving an upwardly turned vertical edge portion of the carpet and to horizontally position a cutting blade across the said slot and removably secure the same against the bottom surface of the said plate, whereby the carpet vertically extending through the said slot is severed as the device is pushed forward.

A further object of the present invention is the provision of a presser plate beneath the first plate, whereby the device is capable of being pressed against the carpet during the cutting of the same.

A still further object of the present invention is to provide the cutting blade at the front portion of the handle and position the same at a horizontal angle across the slot in the said first plate and to provide an upwardly curved handle on the front portion of the plate.

A still further object of the present invention is the provision of a carpet cutter of the character described that is durable, simple in construction, economical to manufacture, positive in operation and highly efiiicent and serviceable in use.

Other objects and advantages will be apparent during the course of the following description.

Referring in detail to the drawing and the numerals thereof, the numeral 1 designates a horizontal top plate having a downwardly extending side portion 8, capable of abutting the wall S and floor, and an upwardly extending curved end portion l0 providing a handle for the operator. The front end portion of the plate is formed with a tapered or angular slot H for receiving the upwardly extending turned portion E2 of the carpet l2. A suitable cutting blade I 4 having a beveled sharp edge I3 is mounted' against the bottom surface of the top plate rand extends at an angle across the said slot as disclosed to advantage in Fig. 1. An elongated metal strap l 5 is positioned against the said blade and the rear end portion thereof is riveted to the top plate 1, as at l6, and the opposite end portion secured to the top plate by a suitable screw l1, whereby the blade is retained in position. A recess I8 is formed in the outer side portion of the top plate for receiving the blade and supporting the nd of the same.

A lower presser plate I9 is provided for retaining the carpet against the floor 20 while the upwardly turned portion I2 of the carpet is being cut. A plurality of suitable screws 2| vertically extend through the presser plate I 9 and top plate l and are secured to the top plate by the lock nuts 22 and 23 as illustrated in Figs. 1 and 3. This method of securing the presser plate to the top plate enables the presser plate to be adjusted for adjusting the height of cut from the floor.

It is to be understood that the form of my invention herewith shown and described is to be taken as a preferred example of the same and that various changes relativ to the shape, size, material and arrangement of parts may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the sub-joined claims.

Having thus described my invention, I claim:

1. A carpet cutting device of the character described, comprising an elongated horizontal plate, a downwardly extending vertically bent portion on one side thereof, said plate being capable of abutting the wall and floor of a room and slidable thereon, said plate having an elongated through openin extending inward. from an end edge of the plate; and adjacent the downward bent portion thereof for connning therein the edge portion of the carpet to be cut, a cutting, blade horizontally positioned at an angle across the elongated through opening, mean's removably securing the blade to, the. plate, said second plate being positioned beneath the first mentioned plate and ho'rizontallyer ranged in parallelism therewith and adapted to be pressed against the carpet on the floor, and means adjustably securing the second plate to the first plate, the second plate being adjustable in a. vertical direction relative to said first plate.

2. In a carpet. cutting device, the combination of: an elongated carpeteengaging base plate; attachment means secured to said base plate and extending upwardly thereirom; an elongated mounting plate secured in vertically spaced relationship, with said carpet-engaging plate, said mounting plate having vertically disposed guide means secured to an edge thereof for engagement with a. wall of a room and an elongated, longitudinal slot extending from an end of said mounting plate in substantial parallelism with and, adjacent to said guide means, said slot receiving'the upwardly extending edge of a carpet adjacent said wall; and a cutter blade supported on'said' mounting plate and extending generally horizontally transversely of said slot for cutting the edge. of said carpet disposed therein.

' 3. In a carpet cutting device, the combination of; an elongated, horizontally disposed carpet-engaging base plate of substantially rectangular configuration; an elongated mounting plate secured in vertically spaced relationship with said base plate, guide means on an edge of said, mounting plate extending in laterally spaced relationship with an edge of said base P ate, a se on plate, said mounting plate having a carpet-receiving aperture extending from one end thereof adjacent said guide means; and a cutter blade secured to said mounting plate transversely of said aperture for cutting the edge of said carpet disposed therein.

In a carpet cutting device, the combination oi: an elon ated, horizontally disposed carpetengaging base plate of "substantially rectangular configuration; an elongated mounting plate secured in vertically spaced relationship with said base plate, said mounting plate having a carpetre'ceivin'gaperture extending from one end thereof; adjustment means operatively engaging saidmounting-plate for varying the vertical spacing between} said base and said mounting plate; guide means on an edge of said mounting plate extending in laterally spaced relationship with an edge of said base plate and adjacent said aperture; and a cutterblade secured to said mpunting plate transversely of said aperture for cutting the edge of said carpet disposed therein.

5. In a carpet cutting device, the combination of: an elongated, horizontally disposed carpetengaging base'plate of substantially rectangularconfiguration; an elongated mounting'plate secured in vertically spaced relationship, with said base plate, said mounting plate having a carpet-receiving aperture extending from one end; thereof; guide means on an edge of said'rnounting plateextending in, laterally spaced relation ship with an edge of said base plate and adja cent said aperture; a' cutter blade secured to said mounting plate and extending transversely across said aperture forcutting the edge of said carpet disposed therein; and supporting means, on said guide, means for supporting the'free endof said blade.
