The invention relates to a special tool and more especially to a scribing and cutting tool for oor coverings such as linoleum or the like.

The .primary object of the invention is the provision of a tool of this character, wherein the same is so constructed that it can be hand operated for the scribing and cutting of iioor coverings such as linoleum or the like so as to have such covering snugly and properlyt at the meeting edges thereof with the Walls of an enclosure, the tool being of a novel construction to enable convenient handling thereof and the easy scribing and cutting of the material.

Another object of the invention is the provision of a tool of this character, wherein the scribing element or the cutting blade is supported in a unique manner and novel in arrangement for the successful working of the tool.

A further object of the invention is the provision of a tool of this character, which is simple in its construction, thoroughly reliable and efiicient in its operation, light in Weight yet strong, durable, and inexpensive to manufacture.

With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing, which discloses the preferred embodiment of the invention and pointed out in the claims hereunto appended.

Referring to the drawing in detail, the tool comprises a frame A cast or otherwise formed and constructed from metal of a kind lightin Weight yet strong and durable. The frame A is provided with an upwardly arched head lll providing a leg Il which is disposed at a slight incline and this leg at opposite sides thereof is iitted with elongated rollers l2 journaled in offset portions i3 and i4, respectively, extended laterally from said leg. At the lower end of the leg Il is journaled a horizontally rotatable friction roller l5 having the beveled upper portion I6 and the straight peripheral guiding edge Il, respectively, the journal for the roller l5 being indicated at i8 and is separably threaded in the lower end of the leg at the longitudinal center thereof.

Depending from the crown I9 of the arched portion lil is an arm forming a bracket 2i) provided with a fork 2l for accommodating therein a stem 22 for a scribing element, in this instance in the nature of a pin 23, which is angu- 10 larly set within the stem` near its lower end by a. set screw 2d and the point 25 of such pin is engageable with a piece of material 26 such as linoleum to be laid upon a floor, the scribing area of such material 26 rides upon a rounded 15 knob 2l formed on and directed inwardly from the leg ll at a point above the friction roller l5 so that the material 26 can be conveniently scribed as is indicated in Figure 1 of the drawing at 2S when the tool is moved when placed 20 in an upright position and superimposed for guiding upon the material to be scribed and out.

The stem 22 plays through the fork 2l of the bracket 2Q and also through an opening or clearance 29 provided in the crown IS and is tted 25 with an adjustable collar 30 against which seats a coiled tensioning spring 3l about said stem. This spring 3l also rests against a washer 32 seated upon the fork 2l of the bracket 20. In this manner the stem 22 is held in a position to 30 have the pin 23 confront the knob 27 for the scribing action of the pin.

'I'he frame A rearwardly of the arched portion I 0 is provided with a loop handle 33 which at the toe and heel areas thereof has feet 34 for 35 the frame A. The foot Sill next to the arched portion I0 has a center guideway 35 for the end portion of a resilient strap or strap-like spring 36 which is pivotally coupled at 3l to the lower end of the stem 22 and this spring functions to 40 hold the stem in a position for the close contact of the pin 23 with the Work. The under face of the spring 3d is dotted with wear buttons 38.

The spring 3E is held in the guideway 35 by a screw-attached clamping plate 39.

In Figure 4 of the drawing there is shown a cutting blade @El adjustably held in a hanger fil adapted for separable fitting in the leg 42 in substitute for the leg H.

The friction roller i5 maintains the tool at a 50 given point from a wall or baseboard and avoids friction in the use of the tool when scribing or cutting the material 2t.

The feet 3Q function as gliders for the frame A in the handling of the tool.

The spring 36 functions to have the pin 23 of the cutter 40 correctly operate for Various thicknesses of material.

What is claimed is;

1. A tool of the character described comprising a frame having an upwardly arched portion providing a sloping leg, elongated rollers journaled at opposite side edges of said leg, a bracket formed with the arched portion and depending inwardly thereof, a tensioned stern fitting said bracket, a guide roller at the lower end of the leg, a scribing element carried by said stem, a work engaging knob formed with said leg, and spring means acting upon the stem to hold the scribing member in confronting relation to the knob.

A tool of the character described comprising a frame having an upwardly arched portion pro-- Viding a sloping leg, elongated rollers journaled at opposite side edges of said leg, a bracket formed with the arched portion and depending inwardly thereof, a tensioned. stem fitting said bracket, a guide roller at the lower end of the leg, a scribing element carried by said stem, a work engaging knob formed with said leg, spring means acting upon the stem to hold the scribing member in confronting relation to the knob, a handle extending from the frame neXt to the arched portion, and feet on the handle extension and constituting gliders.

A tool of the character described comprising a frame having an upwardly arched portion providing a sloping leg, elongated rollers journaled at opposite side edges of said leg, a bracket formed with the arched portion and depending inwardly thereof, a tensioned stem fitting said bracket, a guide roller at the lower end of the leg, a scribing element carried by said stem, a work engaging knob formed with said leg, spring means acting upon the stem to hold the scribing member in confronting relation to the knob, a handle extending from the frame next to the arched portion, feet on the handle extension and constituting gliders, and means for regulating the tension on said stem.
