Be it known that I, Josnrrr H. THOMP- soN, a citizen of the United States ot America, and a resident of Bond Hill, Cincinnati, in the countyv of Hamilton and State ot Chio, have invented a new and improved Saw Guide, of which the following is a description.
My invention relates to a saw guide adapted to be used tor cutting miters at any7 desired angle and has tor an object to provide a saw guide ot the indicated character improved in various particulars as will appear from the speciiic description following, whereby to simplify the construction, promote convenience, and in use to adapt the device for general work as for example in squaring studding joists, or siding, or cutting rafters, and the like.

in carrying out my invention in accordance with the illustrated example a base 10 is provided having` a central depending .flange or rib 11 adapted to be placed against an edge of the material A to be cut by the saw B.
@n the base 10 is advantageously an arched covering 12 provided for conveniently holding the base firmly in position with one hand. At one end oi' the base is a vertical socket 13 in which a tubular guide standard 14e is received, said standard titting the soclet 13 and having an annular groove 15 into which a set screw 16 may be protruded. The socket 13 at the upper edge has graduations as at 17 and the standard 14k at the enlarged lower end has a mark 18 to be brought into alinenient with any of the graduations 17 for angularly setting said standard to suit the particular angle of the miter.
An element 19 has vertical sliding movenient in the `guide standard 1e and has a square or other non-circular cross section so that its movement will be limited to a vertical one and turning oit the said element in said standard 1d will be prevented.. The `guide element 19 depends trom a lateral flange 2O on the upper edge ot a broad saw guide element 21 disposed vertically at a side of the standard 14- beyond the base 10. Un the tace of the element 21 are dat retaining' fingers 22 spaced from and parallel with said face and. secured as by rivets 2?) or the like. A stud 24- projects ;trom the face of the element 21 approximately central between the lingers 22.
l/Vith the above described construction. the base 11 is positioned on the material A to be cutand the set screw 16 is loosened sufficiently to permit turning ot the guide standard 1d about its own axis according to the angle of the miter to be cut. The saw is now entered in the element Q1 between the face oi: said guide and the iingers 22 until the pin 24- rests on the saw at the back edge whereby the element 21 and depending guide element 19 will be sustained on the saw and free to respond to the movements of the saw by vertical guided movement in the standard 14. Thus, the device can be held firmly with one hand on the material while the other hand enters and positions the saw in the element 21.
i would state in conclusion that while the illustrated example constitutes a practical embodiment oif my invention, 1 do not limit myself strictly to the exact de- 'tails herein illustrated, since, manifestly,
the same can be considerably varied without departure from the spirit of the invention as defined in the appended claims.
Paving thus described my invention, I claim:
1. A saw guide including a base, a tubular guide standard turnably adjustable on said base at one end, means to hold the standard in adjusted position, and a saw lguide element presenting a broad surface, iingers parallel with the tace of said guide element and spaced therefrom to accommodate the saw, a pin projecting` laterally from the face oi said guide element approximately central between said fingers, a lateral flange on said element at the back, and a depending element rigid with said flange and having free guided vertical movement in said tubular standard; said depending element AbeingjT eonstrained to paltnke of the turning movements of said standard but restrained against turning n'iovement rel-tively to the standard.
