This invention relates to a smokers accessory and more particularly to the type in which cigarette dispensing and igniting means are combined with a cigarette holding receptacle, and in which such dispensing means and the support for the igniting means cooperate to provide a device into which the required member of cigarettes can be readily inserted with a minimum of effort and without requiring the large increase in the dimensions of the case normally considered to accompany such convenience.

The invention is carried out by providing a case slightly larger in one dimension than necessary to receive the required number of cigarettes, usually those contained in a standard package, and providing a spring-pressed follower latchable in retracted position to provide enough room to receive freely all of said cigarettes. An ignitercarrying support plate is also provided within the case to overlie the ends of some of the stored cigarettes and is provided with specially located pivots which cooperate with a combined follower releasing actuator and cover spring to permit an enlarged actuating portion at the top thereof to nest between the support plate pivots when the cover is closed. Opposite the follower is a guide plate having downwardly and inwardly sloping surfaces at its upper end which assist the last of the cigarettes in sliding into place in the container during charging, said plate also forming a smooth guide or slide against which the cigarettes next to be dispensed are urged.

Additional features of the invention are that the sloping upper surface of the guide plate acts also as a release means for the casing cover latch and is automatically actuated in response to upward movement of a cigarette projector, and that the combined cover spring and follower releasing actuator also provides a stop means preventing excessive opening movement of the cover.

The cigarette case of the present invention is of the type comprising a receptacle Ill and a cover I 2 closing the open top of the receptacle and connected thereto at one side by a hinge I4. The case is preferably designed to hold all of the contents of a standard package of cigarettes, the most common form of which is that holding twenty cigarettes. Preferably the proportions are such that the cigarettes are retained in about the same relative arrangement as in the original package, although this feature is not altogether essential to the invention.

Depending on the thickness of the case, the width across the broad side is made sufiicient to house the mechanism hereinafter described and still provide plenty of room to receive the twenty cigarettes, or other standard package number, freely without forcing the last few cigarettes into place during charging of the receptacle. An L-shaped sheet metal insert I6 consisting of a bottom plate 18 and a wall or guide plate 20 fits against and substantially covers the inside surface of the bottom of the receptacle and the end wall thereof opposite the cover hinge. Feet 22 struck from the insert l6 space the same slightly from the bottom of the case for a purpose to be hereinafter described. The upper end of the wall 2|] is formed into two side tongues 24, 24 and a central tongue 26, all of which slope upwardly and outwardly away from the plane of the wall 20. The tongues 24 are anchored to the wall 28 of the receptacle by means of rivets 30 or the like, and hold the wall 20 of the insert I6 spaced therefrom. The tongue 26 is moderately resilient and is formed at its upper end with a dog 32 receivable in a corresponding recess 34 in the cover l2 for latching the same in closed position. Opposite the wall 28 of the receptacle I0 is a wall 36 to which is secured a zigzag folded leaf spring follower 38 which is expansible towards the right in Figs. 1 and 4 normally to urge cigarettes held in the case towards the wall or guide plate 20 of the insert I8. The spring follower 38, however, can be manually retracted to a position where it does not interfere with the insertion of a new 3 charge of cigarettes and is held in this position by spring fingers 40, 40 which preferably form integral arms of the casing attached portion of the spring 38.

Since it would be awkward to release the follower 38 from the latches 40 once the case was filled with cigarettes and without providing an unnecessarily large case with room for manual manipulation, the invention includes a follower releasing mechanism automatically actuated when the cover [2 is closed after filling. This release mechanism consists of an extension of the follower spring 38 beyond its point-of attachment to the side wall of the casing upwardly above the casing top and thence in a large loop 42 normally tending to extend over the casing edge and impinging upon a portion of the. inside surface of the cover l2. When the cover is open as shown in Fig. 4 the loop 42 and connected leaf spring portion 44 assume their normal positions, but when the cover is closed: the loop 42 is forced inwardly along with the spring portion 44 to press against the upper portion of the retracted follower 38. If the follower has previously been held by the latches 40 the pressure of the spring portion 44 is sufiicientto force the latch fingers 40 aside and cause the follower 38 to release itself therefrom for normalfollower operation.

In connection with the latching of the follower it will be noted that this operation is facilitated by having the major length of the follower spring 38 narrow enough to pass freely between the fingers 40 and by making the cigarette contacting or pusher portion 46 thereof wide enough to be frictionally retained by the fingers 40. In this way it is only necessary for the portion 44 of the end of the spring 38 to contact the other portions of the follower 38 with sufficient force to release the pusher portion 46 from the fingers 49 whereupon the whole follower spring 38. is immediately released for action.

In addition to its function as a releasing actuator for the follower spring 38, the loop 42 has two additional functions. Its tendency to exert an outward force on the inside of the. cover I2 is taken advantage of by using the same as an opening spring for the cover, so that when the dog 32 is released from its notch 34' as hereinafter described, the force of the portion 44 urging the loop 42 outwardly will swing the cover !2 about the hinge [4 to open position. For this purpose the strength of the springportion 44 may be adjusted to the proper value for opening the cover by suitably adjusting the vertical position of the uppermost of attaching members 48', or if necessary, the outermost plate of the spring 38 including portion 44 and loop 42 may be made of heavier material than the remainder of the spring and attached thereto. The loop 42 is also engaged by the cross member of a bail 49 pivotally mounted in openings 50 formed on the inner surfaces of the side members of the cover 12 and thus acts as a stop to prevent" excessive opening of the cover [2 upon its release by the latch 32.

Mounted between the wall 28 of the receptacle and the guide plate 20 of the insert l6 for'vertical sliding movement is the bar 52 connected with a fingerpiece 54 by a pin 56 extending through a slot 58 in the wall 28 of the receptacle Ill. A coil spring is confined by the bent end 62' at the lower end of the bar 52 and abutments 64, 64 struck out of the wall plate 20. The spring 80 urges the bar 52 downwardly, and the same is upwardly actuable against theforce of the spring 60 by means of the integral connected fingerpiece 54 which is on the exterior of the wall 28 of the receptacle. The bent end 62 of the bar includes an elongate pusher 66 extending transversely of the bar and long enough to engage all cigarettes in the row which lies against the plate 20. The pusher 66 is urged against the bottom of the case I0 by the spring 60 and thus normally lies below the surface of the base plate 18, due to-the presence of the spacing feet 22, where it cannot interfere with the proper feeding of the cigarettes by the follower spring 38. When the fingerpiece 54 .israised against the force of the spring 60, the pusher 68 passes through an enlarged opening 68 in thebase plate l8 while the bent end 62 of the bar 52 slides in a suitable slot 10 formed in the guide plate 20, and that row of cigarettes which is in contact with the plate 20 is. projected for ready grasping.

It will be noted that the width of the cigarette projecting pusher 66- is rather limited, being preferably less than one-half the diameter of a standard cigarette, so that as the cigarettes are fed towards the guide plate 20, only those which are snugly up against the same will be projected in response to raising of the pusher 65, and any which, because of the particular arrangement of the cigarettes in the holder, have not substantially reached the full' right-hand position will not be projected.

In order that the case may be kept firmly closed to protect its contents against drying out and stillnot require an additional and inconvenient cover releasing movement, the bar 52 carries an enlargement 12 at its upper. end which enlargement acts as a cam to deflect the resilient tongue 26 and the dog 32 connected thereto. In this way a secure closing means is provided which can also be automatically released simultaneously with the cigarette projecting movementv of the fingerp-iece 54.

At the top of the case is is a supporting plate I4 which is. designed to carry an igniting means. In the form of the invention shown in Figs. 1 to? this means is illustrated as a booklet T6 of paper matches which are presented in convenient position for use at the time a cigarette is withdrawn from the case, the plate 14 overlying all of the cigarettes except that row which is in contact with the guide plate 26. The edges of the-plate are bent over to provide channels 18 to frictionally receive and retain the edges of thefoundation card of the match booklet. If desired, leaf springs or other suitable gripping. means may be provided to augment the holding effect of the channels on the match booklet. One end of the plate 14 is provided with laterally extending gripping fingers which press lightly against the inner surfaces of the side walls of receptacle. IO- to hold the plate against accidental displacement. The upper ends of the fingers 80 are turned outwardly and received in notches 82 in the side walls of receptacle ill to support the plate 14 and prevent the same from being depressed into the receptacle l0 and from resting on the cigarettes therein. The'other end of the plate is slotted and has its central portion bent upwardly to form an overhanging guard 84 which overlies the heads of the matches on a booklet held by the plate 74' and prevents inadvertent ignition of the reserve matches when the match being used is struck. Bending up of the guard 84 provides longitudinally extending arms 85 which each have a laterally extending ear 88. The arms 85 are preferably somewhatresilient to permit the ears 88 tobe sprung into cooperating opposed internally facing recesses 90 formed in the case Ill. The space formed between the arms 86 by the bending'up of the guard 84 permits the nesting of the loop 42 therein when the cover i2 is closed.

The operation of the device of Figs. 1 to 7 may best be described by first assuming that the case I0 is empty and is to be filled. The fingerpiece 54 is raised and dog 32 is retracted by deflector I2 whereupon the cover [2 is released and automatically forced to open positionby the spring portion 44 and loop 42. A match book 16 of a suitable size and with the usual top flap removed may be slid into place on the platel4 by inserting the edges of the foundation card in the friction channels 18 and Sliding the booklet from left to right as shown in Fig. 1 until the match heads are protected by the guard 84. The plate 14 is then pivoted upwardly about the pivots B8 to the highest position possible. With the guard 84 forced against the loop 42 this position would be at an angle of about 50 degrees to the horizontal which is ample for ready filling of the receptacle. Of course, it will be readily understood that if a wider opening for filling is desired, the action of the resilient arms 86 may be availed of and the plate 14 removed from the receptacle mouth, or the slots which form the arms 86 and guard 84 may be extended along the plate body resulting in a resilient mounting for the guard 84. In the latter case, the guard may be swung aside upon contact with the loop 42 to permit the plate 74 to assume a vertical position, when the match booklet has been temporarily removed. The follower spring 38 is then manually engaged on the exposed surface of pusher 46 and urged to the left as shown in Figs. 1 and 4 until the sides of pusher 46 are received and held by the spring fingers 40. With the parts in this position the room provided is more than adequate to receive the number of cigarettes for which the case is designed, e. g. 20 cigarettes, and the contents of a standard package can be readily inserted due to the fully retracted position of the follower spring 38 and the convenient sloping guard surfaces on the portions 24, 26 of the plate 20. When the case is fully charged, it is only necessary to depress or replace the plate 14 and close the cover I2 which is automatically latched by the resilient finger 26 and the dog 32. With this movement the inner portion of the cover adjacent the hinge l4 forces the loop 42 to the right as shown in Figs. 1 and 4, automatically forcing the spring portion 46 out from between the fingers 4D and thus releasing the follower 38 which urges the cigarettes to the right against the guide plate 20. The follower continues to urge the same against the plate into feeding position to replace those withdrawn from time to time. It is also pointed out that when the loop 42 and the portion 44 are forced inwardly by the cover I2 to release the follower spring 38, the gap between the arms 86 serves to permit this movement and nest the loop as clearly indicated in Fig. 1.

With the case Ill charged with cigarettes, the cover having been closed, it is only necessary to raise the thumb piece 54 to cam the dog 32 into inactive position and simultaneously project the cigarettes of the first row into position for ready manual engagement as shown in Fig. 4. One of the cigarettes thus projected can be withdrawn for smoking and a match from the booklet 16 can be readily torn off and used to light the cigarette at the same time, the match head being removed from beneath the guard 84 at one end thereof by first swinging the match. in a horizontal plane and then tearing it from its base. When the match is struck in-the'usual way on a striking portion 92 on thev booklet 1B, the heads of the reserve match supply are fully protected by guard 84 against inadvertent ignition by sparks thrown from the head of the match being lighted.

It will be noted that when the finger button is released after the opening of the cover l2, the same will be automatically retracted to its lower position by the action of the spring 64, thus withdrawing the enlargement l2 and again placing thedog 32 in cover retaining position. Therefore, when the cover is closed after the withdrawal and lighting of the cigarette the same is automatically latched snugly against the top of the case In in response to closing movement of the cover. It will be noted that the top surface of the cover will not engage the remaining projected cigarettes when the cover is closed due to the length of slot 58.

Fig. 8 illustrates a modified form of the invention embodying a different igniter means and in which similar parts have been given the same reference numerals as those used in Figs. 1 to '7. The receptacle IE3 is merely provided with a taller cover 12a adapted to house an ignition device 16a of greater vertical dimension. In this form of the invention the ignition device 16a is a small lighter of the automatic pyrophoric type having a flat base 16?) which replaces the foundation card of the match booklet and slips into the edgeguides 78 on the plate 1 3a where it is frictionally held to permit ready removal for filling and repair. However, the base of lighter 16a. and plate 14a may be integral if desired, and the'whole assembly removed when necessary.

The head 16c of the device 76a may be normally urged to open position so that when the cover lZa is released the wick 1611 will be automatically ignited upon opening of the cover I2. Plate 14a. may be identical with plate 14 of Fig. 7 except that the guard 84 is omitted.

In the foregoing description it will be seen that the invention provides a smokers accessory of compact, convenient size and in which igniter means normally overlying the cigarettes and tending to form an impediment to charging the case with a new cigarette supply, is so arranged that the igniter means can be withdrawn to clear the charging access, the follower means for feeding cigarettes to the discharge apparatus can be fully retracted and latched, and in which the combined discharge guide and cover latch which opposes the follower cooperates with the other features of the invention in providing funnel-like surfaces for leading the cigarettes being charged into proper position in the case. Furthermore, the invention provides a single leaf spring member simultaneously acting as a cover opener, a means for automatically disengaging the follower spring from the detents holding it in retracted position, as well as a suitable means for retaining the cover against excessive opening movement, and a structural interfitting relationship between the igniter supporting means and said spring when the cover is in closed position.

The sloping upper end of the guide plate 20, against which the next row of cigarettes to be projected are urged, is also seen to form a cam, surface for automatically releasing the cover retaining dog at the same time that the cigarettes are partially ejected.

Variations and modifications may be made within the scope of the claims and portions of the improvements may be used without others.

I claim:

1. A smokers accessory comprising an opentoppecl cigarette receptacle having two opposed walls; resilient follower means mounted adjacent one of said walls and normally operative to urge cigarettes in the receptacle towards the other of said walls; a guide plate mounted adjacent the other wall and having downwardly and inwardly sloping upper surfaces, a portion of said plate in the vicinity of at least one of said surfaces being resilient and including a dog held in extended position in the normal position of said plate portion; a cover hingedly mounted on said receptacle to close the same and engageable by said dog when in extended position for retaining the cover in closed position; a cigarette projector slidably mounted on said receptacle adjacent said guide plate; a deflector member connected with and movable simultaneously with said projector and engageable with said resilient plate portion to retract said dog and release said cover when said projector is moved to cigarette projecting position; grip means mounted on said receptacle adjacent said one wall for frictionally retaining said follower means in fully retracted inoperative condition when the follower means are manually retracted into engagement therewith; spring means including a cover engaging portion mounted on said receptacle and engaging said cover adjacent the hinged mounting thereof for urging the cover to open position when the dog is retracted, and including a portion which is extended between said one wall and said follower means actuable inwardly by said cover engaging portion when said cover is closed to release said follower means from said grip means and return the follower means to operative condition; and a support plate for igniter means pivotally mounted on said receptacle closely adjacent the hinged mounting for the cover to normally overlie the contained cigarettes, said support plate being slotted adjacent the pivoted end to accommodate the cover engaging portion of said spring means when the cover is closed.

2. A smokers accessory comprising an opentopped cigarette receptacle having two opposed walls; resilient follower means mounted adjacent one of said wall and to urge cigarettes in the receptacle towards the other of said walls; a guide plate mounted adjacent the other wall, a portion of said plate being resilient and including a dog held in extended position in the normal position of said plate portion; a cover hingedly mounted on said receptacle to close the same and engageable by said dog for retaining the cover in closed position; spring means urging said cover to open position; a cigarette projector slidably mounted on said receptacle adjacent said guide plate; and a deflector member connected with and movable simultaneously with said projector and engageable with said resilient portion of the plate to retract said dog and release said cover when said projector is moved to cigarette projecting position.

3. A smokers accessory comprising an opentopped cigarette receptacle having two opposed walls; resilient follower means mounted on one of said walls to urge cigarettes in the receptacle towards the other of said walls; a guide plate slotted at its lower end and mounted adjacent and parallel to the other wall and spaced slightly therefrom, said plate having a portion at its upper end which is downwardly and inwardly sloping, said plate being resilient in the vicinity 8c of said portion and carrying a dog near the upper end thereof, said dog being held in extended position in the normal position of said plate portion; a cover hingedly mounted on said one wall to close the receptacle and having means engageable by said dog to retain the cover in closed position; spring means urging said cover to open position; a bar mounted between said guide plate and said other wall for vertical sliding movement; a horizontal abutment on the lower end of said bar and extending through said slot for engaging and projecting a cigarette resting against said guide plate when the bar is raised; a deflector member on the upper end of said bar engageable with the sloping upper end of said resilient plate portion when the bar is raised to deflect said plate portion, retract said dog and release the cover for opening movement, said other wall having a slot adjacent said bar; and a manual operating member connected to said bar and extending through said slot.

4. A smokers accessory comprising an opentopped cigarette receptacle having two opposed walls; resilient follower means mounted adjacent one of said walls and normally operative to urge cigarettes in the receptacle towards the other of said walls; a cover hingedly mounted on said receptacle to close the same; grip means mounted on said receptacle adjacent said one wall for frictionally retaining said follower means in fully retracted inoperative condition against said one wall when the follower means are manually retracted into engagement therewith; and spring means including a cover engaging portion mounted on said receptacle and engaging said cover adjacent the hinged mounting thereof for urging the cover to open position and including a portion which is extended between said one wall and said follower means actuable inwardly by said cover engaging portion when said cover is closed to release said follower means from said grip means and return the follower means to operative condition.

5. A smokers accessory comprising an opentopped cigarette receptacle having two opposed walls; resilient follower means mounted adjacent one of said walls and normally operative to urge cigarettes in the receptacle towards the other of said walls; a cover hingedly mounted on said receptacle to close the same; grip means mounted on said receptacle adjacent said one wall for frictionally retaining said follower means in fully retracted inoperative condition against said one wall when the follower means are manually retracted into engagement therewith; spring means including a cover engaging portion mounted on said receptacle and engaging said cover adjacent the hinged mounting thereof for urging the cover to open position and including a, portion which is extended between said one wall and said follower means actuable inwardly by said cover engaging portion When said cover is closed to release said follower means from said grip means and return the follower means to operative condition; and a support plate for igniter means pivotally mounted on said receptacle closely adjacent the hinged mounting for the cover to normally overlie the contained cigarettes, said support plate being slotted adjacent the pivoted end to accommodate the cover engaging portion of said spring means when the cover is closed.

6. A smoker's accessory comprising an opentopped cigarette receptacle having two opposed walls; resilient follower means mounted adjacent one of said walls and normally operative to urge cigarettes in the receptacle towards the. :other.

of said walls; a cover hingedly'mounted fon said receptacle'to close the same; gri'p means mounted on said receptacle adjacent said one wall for fricjtionally retaining said follower means in fully retracted inoperative condition against said one wall when the follower means are manually retracted into engagement therewith; spring means including an end ring mounted on said receptacle and engaging said cover. adjacent the hinged mounting thereof for urging the cover to open position and including a portion which is extended between said one wall and said follower means actuable inwardly by said end ring when said cover is closed to release said follower means from said grip means and return the follower means to operative condition; and means on said cover passing through said end ring and engageable with the inner surface of the same to prevent excessive opening movement of said cover.

7. A smokers accessory comprising an opentopped cigarette receptacle having two opposed walls; resilient follower means mounted on one of said walls and normally operative to urge cigarettes in the receptacle towards the other of said walls, said follower means comprising a spring leaf and a cigarette pusher member broader than said spring leaf; a cover hingedly mounted on said receptacle to close the same; grip means mounted on said one wall of a size to fric-tionally grasp and retain said pusher member and thereby retain said follower means in fully retracted inoperative position against said one wall when the pusher member is manually retracted into engagement therewith; spring means including a cover engaging portion mounted on said receptacle and engaging said cover adjacent the hinged mounting thereof for urging the cover to open position, and including a portion which is extended between said one wall and the spring leaf of said follower means and which is actuable inwardly by said cover engaging portion when said cover is closed to release said pusher member from said grip means and thereby release said follower means for operation.

8. A smokers accessory comprising an opentopped cigarette receptacle having two end walls and two side walls and designed to receive cigarettes therein in erect position; resilient follower means mounted adjacent one of said end walls to urge cigarettes in the receptacle towards the other end wall; a support plate for an igniter means mounted on said receptacle adjacent the open top thereof and positioned to overlie the cigarettes therein other than those next adjacent said other end wall, said plate having laterally extending ears at one end thereof each cooperating with a corresponding recess in one of said side walls adjacent said one end wall to pivotally mount said plate for movement upwardly from the receptacle top; laterally extending spring tongues on said plate adjacent the other end thereof for friotionally engaging said side walls to releasably retain the plate therebetween, and stop means on said tongues for engagin portions of said side walls to prevent depression of said plate into the receptacle; and oppositely facing marginal guides extending along said plate for releasably mounting the igniter means thereon.

9. A smokers accessory comprising an opentopped cigarette receptacle having two end walls and two side walls and designed to receive cigarettes therein in erect position; resilient follower means mounted adjacent one of said end walls to urge cigarettes in the receptacle towards the other end wall;:'-a' support plate for an ignit'er means mounted on said receptacle adjacent the open" top thereof and positioned to overlie the cigarettes therein other than those next adjacent said other end wall, said plate having spaced resilient arms extendin'glongitudinally from one end of the plate and having each a laterally extending car at its end, each said ear cooperating with a corresponding recess in one of said side walls adjacent said one end wall to pivotally mount said plate for-movement upwardly from the receptacle top; laterally extending spring tongues on said plate adjacent the other end thereof for frictionally engaging said side walls to releasably retain the plate therebetween, and stop means on said tongues for engaging portions of said side walls to prevent depression of said plate into the receptacle; and oppositely facing marginal guides extending along said plate for releasably mounting igniter means thereon.

10. A smokers accessory comprising an opentopped cigarette receptacle having two end walls and two side walls and designed to receive cigarettes therein in erect position; resilient follower means mounted adjacent one of said end walls to urge cigarettes in the receptacle towards the other end wall; a support plate for a match booklet mounted on said receptacle adjacent the open top thereof and positioned to overlie the cigarettes therein other than those next adjacent said other end wall, said plate having spaced resilient arms extending longitudinally from one end of the plate and having each a laterally extending ear at its end, each said ear cooperating with a corresponding recess in one of said side walls adjacent said one end wall to pivotally mount said plate for movement upwardly from the receptacle top; laterally extending spring tongues on said plate adjacent the other end thereof for friction-ally engaging said side walls to releasably retain the plate therebetween, and stop means on said tongues for engaging portions of said side walls to prevent depression of said plate into the receptacle; and oppositely facing marginal guides extending along said plate for releasably mounting a match booklet thereon; said arms bein formed by longitudinally slitting said plate, the portion of said plate between said arms being bent to overlie the body of the plate and operating as an ignition guard to protect the heads of matches mounted on said plate from inadvertent ignition when a match is struck nearby.

11. A smokers accessory comprising an assembly including a cigarette receptacle and a cover mounted on said receptacle for movement between closed and open positions; spring means urging said cover towards open position; latch means for retaining said cover in closed position; an automatic pyrophoric lighter removably mounted on said assembly to overlie a portion of the cigarette receptacle and positioned to cooperate with said cover and including a pivoted head having an actuating element connected to said head for movement thereby, said head being spring pressed away from ready position, said head being engageable by said cover and movable thereby to ready position during closing of the cover, and being released for actuating movement away from ready position to produce a flame by opening movement of said cover; a slid able manual control member; and means simultaneously actuated by sliding movement of said control member for releasing said latch means and for projecting cigarettes from said receptacle,
