IGNITING' DEVICE.
Application filed February 19, 1923. Serial No. 620,065.
bustible elements for the purpose of pro-v ducing lire* or for communicating the same, and has for its object to provide a substitute for matches; the device comprising a receptacle for combustible pellets, mechanism for ejecting the pellets consecutively for each combustible charge, and mechanism for igniting the pellets as they are ejected from the body of the receptacle.
Each pellet comprises a combustible charge and is adapted to burn for the same period of time as an ordinary match.
rPhe invention further comprises mechanism for igniting the combustible pellets on a prepared paper similar to the ordinary safety match, and mechanism for renewing the paper with a fresh portion as it becomes worn.
The mechanism further comprises means for breaking up and discharging the ashes of combustion at the termination thereof so that the delivery mechanism may be capable of receiving a new pellet when withdrawn to inoperative position within the receptacle.
The invention also comprises other novel features as more fully described in the appended specification and defined in the claims. f

Referring tothe drawings, the device consists of a receptacle 2l, having an emission `port 22, for pellets 23. A cover 24, for the emission port, is hinged to the receptacle,
vand has a corrugated surface 25, for frictional engagement with a pellet for the purpose of igniting the same. A plunger 26, having an enlarged cylindricalend 27, is slidingly mounted within the receptacle in compartment 28, formed by the partition 29. A spring 30, interposed between the recept-acle wall and thecylindrical'end of the plunger, tends to force the plunger outwardly through emission port 22. The delivery end of the plunger is formed with a recess or pocket 31, adapted to receive a single pellet. The pocket is eccentric relative to the axis of the Vplunger sothat the pellet contained therein will project from the pocket sufficiently to engage with the igniting surface 25, of cover 24. A spring 32 serves to maintain the cover in operative engagement'with the pellet. The plunger is provided with an arm 33, projecting through slot 321- in the wall of the'receptacle, and projecting through slot 35 in latch member 36.V The arm 33 affords a means for manually manipulating the plunger to its inoperative position Within the receptacle.
The latch member 36 is mounted on the pivot bar 37, and its outer extremity 3S eX- tends over the emission port 22 in operative position of the latch member. A detent lever 39, also mounted on pivot bar 37, serves to engage with the cylindrical portion 27, of Y plunger 26, to retain the same within the receptacley and against the tension of spring 30.
Latch member 36 and detent lever 39 are maintained `in opera-tive position by a spring 40. The latch member extremity 38, when y l the plunger is extended from the emission port, projects in slot 4l in the plunger, and, as thefplunger is withdrawnV Within the receptacle, serves to break up and remove the ash remaining in the plunger pocket after combustion. Slot 4:1 and slots 42, serve first to supply suficient air to maintain combustion, and secondly, to provide an outlet for the ashes of combustion.
The receptacle-2l, adjacent-tor` emission port 22,2.is-provided` with a wall extension- 20, serving, in the normal positionoiZ the plunger, to partly coverthe pocket 3l, so that but one pellet will be contained therein, and the same will not become ignited by contact with the edge ci the emission port when the plunger is-released.' On withdrawing the plunger within the receptacle, the -plungeris drawn back suliciently to allow'a pellet to 'enter the pocket in the Lend of the plunger; the plunger then advancing untily the :detentylever 39 engages 'withV part 270i the plunger.

Shield 43 issecured by members 44, projectingfrom the body, andhas'anear 45,n projecting over theedge'vof ,the receptacle and by wh'i'ch'the l'shield may be manually extended 4to operative position.z lWithin ythe receptacle, the follower 46, actuated by spring-475, serves `to'rtorcel'the pellets into the deliveryzpocket; Aplate member 46, on thef'oppositeend of spring 47, is reversible in position relative to follower 46, so that either? may serve the same purpose, and vare further removable from the receptacle'when cover-,49 Iiswin `open position, so thatdhe re-` ceptacle lmay be quickly yrefilled with a new supply of: pellets. The receptacle is provided with projecting lianges 50,serving to protectthe pocket offthe user from wear.
In use, the receptacle beingfilled with pellets, the operator" depresses lever ends 51, of latclrmember 36. anddetent member 39,l thereby releasingthe plunger, which is then forced outward by spring 30. IThe plungerrforces openthefcover 24, and, as
the Apellet :emergesfrom 'the emission* port, it engages with :frictional'surl'ace 25, ofthe cover, andis ignited. Upon ignition', the pellet, beingl supported by the covery and within the plunger pocket, will'burn until consumed. After combustion, the operatory graspsthe. arm and forces the plunger within thereceptacle; The ash remaining within thepoclet, isbroken up by member 38 the particles of the: ashpassing out through the slots in the plunger. The plunger-:is forcedinwarduntil the pocket registersawith the rinteriorfol.y the receptacle-allowing. a pellet toenter, and is then retained'by'the:detent member 39.

Fromvr the foregoing description and drawings, it may berseen that I have :provided` simple and e'llicient means for igniting a combustible pellet, for maintaining combustion of: the same until consumed, and for:removingthe ashes after the combustion terminates, the inventionf includinga re ceptacle and operative elements, and all within the dimensions of anI ordinaryv match-box.
iVhat is claimed is:
l. The combination with arpellet receptacle having an emission orifice, of a cover hinged to the top of the receptacle and adjacent to the orifice, a spring normally holding the cover over the orifice, a. trictional corrugated vsurtace onwtheinner side oil the cover, afplunger sliding in the receptacle, and having a pellet pocket in the extremity thereof, anl enlarged cylindrical cnd yon the plungerand within the receptacle, a springv interposed between the cylindrical endiand `the wall of the receptacle, a latch to retain the plunger within' the receptacle in inoperative. position, and av spring to actuatev the latch;

a plunger slidingly mounted in the plunger compartment, said plunger compartment having a slot in the wall thereof, an enlarged cylindrical section forming one end of the plunger, a pellet pocket in the opposite end of the plunger, a spring interposed between the cylindrical section of the plunger and the wall of the receptacle, a latch member to retain the vplunger within the receptacle in inoperative position, said pellet pocket registering with the interior of the receptacle in inoperative position, and a spring to actuate the latch member.
4. The combination with a pellet receptacle having an emission orifice, of a cover hingedly connected to the top of the receptacle and normally covering the emission orifice, a spring to actuate the cover, a frictional igniting surface on the inner side of the cover, a plunger slidingly mounted in the receptacle and adapted to extend through the emission orifice, a spring to actuate the plunger, a pellet pocket in the end of the plunger and eccentric with the axis thereof and arranged so that a pellet will project from the pocket and into contact with the cover, means for manually retracting the plunger within the receptacle, said pellet pocket registering with the interior of the receptacle in the retracted position, and a spring-actuated catch to hold the plunger within the receptacle in inoperative position.
5. The combination with a pellet receptacle having an emission orifice, of a springactuated igniter disposed adjacent to the orifice, a plunger slidingly mounted within the receptacle and adapted to project through the orifice, a pellet pocket inthe end of the plunger and open at the side in opposed relation to the igniter, a spring to actuate the plunger, and means for holding the plunger within the receptacle and against the tension of its actuating spring.
6. The combinationwith a pellet receptacle having an emission orifice, of a springactuated igniter disposed adjacent to the orifice and normally covering the same, a plunger Within the receptacle and having a pellet pocket in the end thereof, said pocket opening in opposed relation to the igniter in the extended position of the plunger, a spring to actuate the plunger, means for manually withdrawing' the plunger within the receptacle, and detent means for the plunger in the retracted position.
The combination with a pellet'receptacle having an emission orifice, of a springactuated igniter adjacent to the orifice and normally covering'the same, a plunger withinthe receptacle and having a pellet pocket in opposed relation to the igniter in the extended position of the'plunger, a spring to actuate the plunger, said plunger having a slot in the end thereof and extending deeper than the pellet pocket, a spring-actuated latch-member to retain the plunger within the receptacle in inoperative position, and a projecting lug on the latch member adapted to extend in the longitudinal slot in the end of the plunger and beneath the pellet pocket. 8. The combination with a receptacle hav- -ing an emission orifice, a spring-actuated igniter adjacent to the orifice, a plunger working in the receptacle and having a pellet pocket in opposed relation to the igniter in the extended position of the plunger, a spring to actuate the plunger, means for retaining the plunger within the receptacle in inoperative position, a reel compartment in the receptacle, adapted to contain a roll of igniting paper, said receptacle having an orifice for the web of the igniting paper, and clamps on the igniter to hold the igniting paper thereon.
9. The combination with a receptacle having an emission orifice, of a spring-actuated igniter adjacent to the orifice and normally covering the same, a plunger slidingly mounted within the receptacle and having a pellet pocket in one end thereof in opposed relation to the igniter in the extended position of the plunger, a spring to actuate the plunger and tending to force the plunger outwardly through the emission orifice, aspring-actuated latch member to retain the plunger within the receptacle in its inoperative position, said plunger having a longitudinal slot extending below the pellet pocket, a projecting lug on the latch member and adapted to extend within the slot in the extended position of the plunger, said pellet pocket being in registration with the interior of the receptacle in the retracted position of the plunger, and adapted to receive one pellet at a time, afollower within the receptacle to force the pellets into the pellet pocket, a spring to actuate the follower, and a sliding cover to retain the spring and follower within the receptacle.
10.
