This invention relates to an improved receptacle and lighter, the receptacle being adapted for holding cigarettes, cigars or tobacco.

The object of the invention is to combine these two articles not only for assembly but to enable the lighter to be lighted when the lid of the receptacle is being closed. Furthermore, the lighter has a cover or lid which can not be latched in closed position unless the main lid is closed. This assures closing of the two lids and also prevents the lighting of the lighter While it is in the pocket.

The invention relates to certain details of construction which will be more fully def scribed hereinafter and finally embodied in the clauses of the claim.

The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of one form of my combined case and lighter. Figure 2 is a section through the lighter part, partly broken away. Figure 3 is a section on line 3-3 in Figure 2. Figure 1 is a perspective view of i the combined push rod and latch used in the lighter.

In the article that I have invented, the receptacle, which I shall call the case, and the lighter are combined in a way to provide 80 for coordinating the parts so that when the lid of the case is released and flies open by spring pressure it releases the lid of the lighter which also is opened -by a spring and then when a cigarette or the like-is removed from the case and the lid of the case is snapped shut it actuates the spark mechanism to ignite the wick of the lighter. This action also laces the latch that holds the lid of the lig ter closed in osition to engage the lid of the lighter an when this latter lid is closed the whole device is again entirely closed. y

In the drawings I have shown a cigarette case as comprising the receptacle, the case "hold the lid shut and the lip can be released 20 exposed for ignition. The ignition is by,

beingshown at 10 and the lid being shown at 11, these parts being hinged together at by pressing on the finger piece 16. The lighter is illustrated in general by the reference numeral 17 and comprises the usual fuel space 18 with a wick 19 that has its end means of the usual flint which I show at 21 which is pressed by a spring 23 in the holder 22 against the rough sparking wheel 24: which is readily rotatable on a shaft 25 The sparking wheel is rotated in one direction by the pinion 26 which has a slight side motion on a shaft 25 so that the ratchet 27 is not operative when the pinion 26 rotates in the reverse direction.

. A spring 28 abuts on the pinion 26 and on the arm 29 to yieldingly hold the pinion against the sparking wheel. The pinion is rotated by a sliding rack 30 which has teeth 31 that mesh with the teeth of the pinion 26. This rack or bar 30 has a head 32 andis nor-' mally held retreated by a spring 33 which bears againstthe front wall 3d of the lighter and on the end of a sleeve 35 which is fastened to the head 32. The spring 33 and the sleeve 35 surround-the pin 36 which keeps theni'aligned. The head 32 is on the outside I of the back wall 37 of the lighter and is engaged by the part 38 of the lid 11 which is beyond the partition 39 of the lid which partition acts as the end of the com artment that holds the cigarettes or the li e. The lighter has a lid 40-which is normally pushed open by a. spring 41 and is hinged at 42 so as to be swung to uncover the lighter to enable the flame of the end 20 of the wick to be utilized; v I v The lid has a. catch 40 which is disposed sothat it will engage the latch 42 which is at the end of the bar 30 but this engagement can not take place unless the bar 30 is pushed '90 forward which is normally done by the part 38 of the lid 11 but in case of failure to ignite it can be operated by hand as will be seen from Figure 1.

The lid 11 is held in its closed position by the catch 14 and the lip 15 and the lid thus holds the bar 30 inits forward posi-' tion. As the cigarette is lighted the lid 40 is closed and it will stay shut because latch 42 is advanced to the position where it receives the catch 40a.- The front wall of the lighter has a recess or hole 43 into or through which the latch 42 can project. The lid can be provided with a snufier or extinguisher 4A WhlCh passes down over the wick and the small opening through which it projects.

The cap 45 indicates a closure for the usual filler opening through which fuel can be supplied to the reservoir ofthe lighter.

Various changes can be made in the form and relative positions of the parts of this device without departing from the scope of the invention as defined in the claims,

A receptacle and a lighter secured together, a hinged lid to cover both, an ignition device in the lighter and including a push rodhaving a head onone end and a catch engaging part on the other end, the head being disposed so as to be pushed when the lid is closed whereby the lighter is actuated and the catch engaging end of the rod presented to locking position, and a supplemental-lid on the lighter with. a catch to en- I gage the said catch-engaging end of the rod.
