CIGARETTE-BOX.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. '7, 1915.
Application filed October 22, 1914. I Serial No. 868,002.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DAVID S'roLL, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of New York, borough of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Cigarette-Box, of which the followingis'a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention comprehends the provision of an improved cigarette box designed to contain cigarettes or the like in spaced relation and to project the same, one above the other, in staggered relation or otherwise, such that the convenient Withdrawal of the cigarettes independently, can be accomplished.
Another object of the invention 1s to provide an improved cigarette box in which the cover thereof opens and closes somewhat in the manner of an ordinary match box but in which a special construction is provided to divide the box into a plurality of cells or cigarette receiving spacesto hold the latter slightly spaced apart, while means are provided to cause the automatic opening of the cover or top of the box upon the release of a catch designed to hold the same in a closed position, said means serving to simultaneously eject or elevate certain of the cigarettes in such a manner that they can be easily removed and so that the remaining ones can also be subsequently removed without inconvenience or fumbling over the cigarettes. I
With the above and other objects in View, the invention resides in the peculiar combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter more fully described, illustrated and claimed, it being also an object to provide a device which is simple in construction, durable and efficient in operation.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views and in which Figure l is a perspective view of my improved cigarette box with the cover in an open position and certain of the cigarettes elevated; Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view thereof in a similar position, the section being taken on the line 22 of Fig. 4; Fig. 3 is a view similar to Fig. 2 but showing the box in a closed position and taken on the line 33 of Fig. 4; Fig. 4 is a vertical cross sectional view taken on the line 4-4 of Fig.
2; Fig. 5 is a horizontal sectional view taken on the line 55 of Fig. 4. As illustrated, the improved cigarette box mcludes a body 6 having a cover or top 7 hinged thereto as shown at 8 so as to swing vertically .at one narrow edge toward and away from the body. The cover is designed to be held toward the body in order to hold: the box closed as by means of a spring catch 9 carried by the body which engages, by means of a shoulder 10thereon, a projection carried by the cover at the free end thereof; the catch is capable of depression by a button or projection 11 so as to disengage the catch from the cover and permit the cover to open. The top of the body is formed with opposed interior corrugations 12 preferably produced by a strip 13 so that the corruga tions lie in opposed pairs with five at each side of the box and located near the top of the latter. This corrugated strip forms a, surrounding seat with the upper edge of the box body to take the cover with the edge thereof resting thereon so that the cover '86 is limited in its closing movement thereagainst. Fitted in the box is a combined partition and compartment forming member'ffi 14 which is provided with opposed corrugations 15 located in juxtaposition and in alinement laterally with the opposed corrugations in the sides of the box body, thus providing a pair of rows of cells or cigarette receiving spaces 16 at either side of the partition with five or any other desired number in a row. This partition is preferably made up of a shell having spaced side portions 17 and end portions anchored to the ends of; the box body by means of solder or other wise, as shown at 18, although no restriction is desired to 'be made in this regard. The sides of the partition are held spaced apart at their depressed portions by spacing strips 19 extending horizontally thereof, said strips terminating short of the partition at the end of the box to which the cover is pivoted or hinged, as shown in Fig. 3 of the drawings. The purpose of this spacing of the sides of the partition is to provide for the vertical movement therein of an angular plunger which includes a vertical ortion 20 having a horizontally slotted upper end 21 extending toward the hinged end of the box with the slot 22 thereof slidably and pivotally engaged by an arm 23 fixed to the adj acent end of the cover and projecting therefrom. This arm has spaced portions which straddle the horizontal portion 21 and a pin or rivet 24,- whichengages the slot in such a manner as to allow or compensate for the swinging or pivotal movement of the arm in an arc of which the hinge connection 8 of the cover is a pivot, the pin sliding inwardly of the slot when the cover is closed and the arm swings downwardly, but sliding outwardly in the slot and into the upwardly curved outer portion thereof when the cover is open. The curved portion not only allows for the movement of the arm in an are as specified but permits opening of the cover to a greater degree so that interference thereby with the withdrawal of the cigarettes is obviated.
The vertical portion of the angular plunger operates between the spaced sides of the partition and said plunger further comprises a horizontal portion 25 which also operates vertically between the sides of the partition beneath the lower spacing strip 19 and carries or is formed with a plurality of angularly bent foot portions 26 each simulating a presser foot and preferably stamped from a single section of metal including the horizontal portion 25 of the plunger in such a manner as to produce restricted or' reduced neck portions 27 which operate in vertical slots 28 in the depressed portions of the corrugations of the corrugated sides of the partitions producing the compartments or cells. These slots communicate with the lower end of the partition or substantially so in order that the foot portions 26 can move in juxtaposition to the bottom 29 of the box body and will be spaced apart therefrom and elevated, and are located in staggered relation as is clearly seen in Fig. 5 of the drawings in order thatthe cigarettes 30 which are supported thereon will be elevated above the remaining cigarettes 31 which rest upon the box body and in the remaining compartments disposed in staggered relation with respect to each other and the other cigarettes. To accomplish this two slots and foot portions are provided on one side, spaced from the ends of the box, while three of such slots and foot portions are provided on the opposite side intermediately and at the ends of the box so that the reverse arrangement of cigarettes occurs on opposite sides of the partition with the partition slightly elevated above the sides of the box body in order to provide shoulders forcontact for the lower ends of the cigarettes to facilitate the filling or loading of the box.
The lower spacing strip serves to resist downward pressure of an expansible coiled spring 32 constituting a spring element or means for manually raising the plunger and consequently the foot portions and cigarettes supported thereon, as wellas to spring and hold the cover in an open position. For this purpose the horizontal portion 21, or the the plunger moves upwardly the contact of the bottom wall of the slot 22 with the pin will cause the cover to swing on its hinge to an open position. The connection between the cover and the angular plunger is substantially in the form of a toggle or compensating joint and by the arrangement specified, when the catch is released the opening of the cover and elevation of the cigarettes in spaced relation is instantaneous and automatic. After the elevated cigarettes have been removed no trouble is experienced in removing the remaining ones.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. A cigarette box comprising hinged sections, one of said sections serving to receive the cigarettes and means to cause the alternate cigarettes to move vertically above the other cigarettes when the box is opened, the elevated cigarettes being located in stagered relation to each other and the remaining cigarettes, and the latter being stationar s A cigarette box comprising a body, a cover hinged to the body, said body being divided into a plurality of cells and means in the box for supporting cigarettes in cer- 105 tain of the cells and elevating the same when the box is open, said means embodying a plunger having foot portions on which said cigarettes are supported and spring means acting on theplunger to elevate the same 110 and the foot portions thereof. 3. A cigarette box comprising a body, a cover hinged to the body, said body being divided into a pluralit of cells and means in the box for supporting cigarettes in oer tain of the cells and elevating the same when the box is open, said means embody1ng a plunger having foot portions on which said cigarettes are supported, a connection between the plunger and the cover of the box whereby the cover will be simultaneously raised with the cigarettes, and a spring for forcing said plunger upwardly and said cover into open position.
4:. A cigarette box. of the class described including a body, a covenhinged to one narrow end of the body, a corrugated partition held in the body and cooperating with the body to provide opposed series of cigarette receiving spaces, a catch for holding the cover in closed position, an angular plunger yertically movable in the partition and having a vertical portion ad acent to the point cover and said vertical portion of the plunger, supporting portions carried by the plunger, said partition having spaced vertical slots movably receiving the supporting portions therethrough, certain of the cigarettes being mounted upon said supporting portions and the remaining cigarettes being supported upon the bottom of the body and a spring anchored in the partition and acting on the plunger, whereby when the cover is released it will be opened by vertical actuation of the plunger and the cigarettes mounted upon the supporting portions elevated above the remaining cigarettes.
5. A cigarette boX of the class described including a body, a cover hinged to one narrow end of the body, a corrugated partition held in the body and cooperating with the body to provide opposed series of cigarette receiving spaces, a catch for holding the cover in closed position, an angular plunger vertically movable in the partition and having a vertical portion adjacent to the point of hinge connection between the cover and body, a compensating joint connecting the cover and said vertical portion of the plunger, supporting portions carried by the plunger, said partition having spaced vertical slots movably receiving the supporting portions therethrough, certain of the cigarettes being mounted upon said supporting portions and the remaining cigarettes being supported upon the bottom of the body and a spring anchored in the partition and acting on the plunger, whereby when the cover is released it will be opened by vertical actuation of the plunger and the cigarettes mounted upon the supporting portions elevated a uniform distance and in staggered relation above the remaining cigarettes, the latter cigarettes being stationary and said partition being elevated above the surround ing edge of the body to form shoulders facilitating the insertion of the cigarettes into the spaces.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
