DOOR
Filed March 20, 1946 INVENT OR.
ATTD RNEYB Patented juy 11, 19510 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 1 Claim.
This invention relates to a door composed of several panels which are hingedly connected to- .gether to form -a single unit.
An `object of this invention is to provide a door that can be opened only partially for the entrance therethrough or should the door be closed and accidently struck by a person which will give sufciently to prevent damage to the person.
Another object of the invention is to provide a swinging door that is efiicient in operation, durable in use and for the purpose designed can be inexpensively manufactured.
With the above and other objects in view the invention consists of the novel details yof construction, arrangement and combination of parts more fully hereinafter described, claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawing in which:
Figure 1 is an elevational view of an embodiment of the invention;
Figure 2 is a sectional View on the line 2-2 of Figure 1;
Figure 3 is a sectional view on the line 3-3 of Figure 1;
Figure 4 is an end view `on the line 4-4 of Figure 1 and Figure 5 is .a perspective view of a double acting hinge.
Referring more in detail to the drawing the numeral I designates the door frame which is of the conventional type comprising the j amb l2 and face paneling I4.
The door I6 can be made of two or more sections I8 and the sections are hinged together by the double acting hinges 20 and the section closest to the jamb I 2 is also hinged to the jamb by double acting hinges 20.
The panels are mounted in straight alignment with each other and the jamb by means of the cables '22 passing through the panels adjacent the bottom and top edges thereof to be anchored at 24 in the iirst panel.
The upper cable emerging from the last panel passes through the jamb over a pulley 26 to be connected to a weight 28 movably mounted by action of the panels within the cavity l30 between the jamb l2 and stud 32.
The lower cable emerges from the last panel passes through the jamb under the pulley 34 and over pulley 36 on the same shaft and in alignxzrent -with pulley 26 to be connected to the weight The pulleys are mounted by means of brackets 38 secured to the jamb I2 in the usual manner.
Thus a swinging door has been provided that can be fully opened by pressure thereon or only partially opened.
It is believed the construction of the door and its manner of operation will be obvious to those skilled in the art and it is to be understood that changes may be made in the minor details of construction, arrangement and combination of parts provided they fall within the spirit of the invention and the scope of the appended claim.
Having thus described the invention what is claimed as new and desired to be secured by Letters Patent is:
A device 4of the character described, comprising la door, consisting of several panels, a pair of multiple leaf hinges for hinging said panels together, means for hanging said door, upper and lower cables trained through said panels above and below said hinges, the forward ends of said cables being secured to said first panel inwardly thereof, pulleys to receive the ends of the cable emerging from said last panel and weighted means on said latter ends for maintaining said panels in alignment.
