This invention relates to improvements in Window construction, and it is the'principal object of my invention to provide a window the sashes of which can be moved entirely out of the window opening into a lower chamber through a trap door formed with the Window sill in order to leave an unobstructed opening for moving pianos, safes, or the like furniture through the window without the necessity of removing the sash cords and weights, and for facilitating the cleaning of the Windows.
Another obj ect of my invention is the provision of a window` construction having a removable bi-partite trap door formed in', its sill normally covering the upper opening of the window receivinor chamber. A
Still another object ofn my invention is the provision of a Window construction equipped with means for preventing the entrance ofr moisture through the space between sill and window frame.
A further object of my invention is the` provision of a window construction equipped with a bi-partite trap door in its sill the hingedly connected parts of which are normally kept in horizontal alignment by a suitable spring controlled system of levers, adapted to be operated by a foldable operating lever.
A still further object of my invention is the provision of a comparatively simple win-A dow construction, yet durable and eiiicientu in operation.
These and other objects and advantages of` my invention will become more fully known as the description thereof proceeds, and willA then be specifically deined in the appended claims.

The outer end of lever is jointed as at A35 to the body ofthe lever and-formed into a handle `36. v The ends of parts 17, 18 are equipped with recesses `37, 38, to engage suitable bars 39 in the window frame, and suitable tightening means 40 are provided for producing a moisture proof closure.
Similar tightening means 41 are provided in the frame attached by a chain 42 to the window.
The chamber into which the sashes are sunk is arranged below the sill and designated 43 and is equipped with suitable guides 44 for the sashes.
The operation of my device will be" clearly understood from the above descriptionl and simultaneous inspectionV of the drawing. If it is desired to lower the saslies into chamber 43, lever is operated to unlock the parts 1T and 18 of the sill'so that the same will turn about the hinge 21 to open entrance into pit and chamber 43, and the locking operation is done by a reversed order of steps.
It will be understood that I have disclosed the preferred form of my invention only and that I may make such changes therein as come within the scope of the appended claims without departure from the spirit of my invention.
Having thus described. my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A window construction comprising a frame, a pit formed at the lower part thereof, window sashes adapted to be lowered into said pit, a bi-partite cover for said pit con stituting the window sill, hinges connectingboth parts of the cover, plates on the underside of said cover parts, a system of spring controlled locking arms normally arranged on said parts, and an operating lever to operate said arms for allowing a folding of the I cover parts about their hinge.
2. In a window construction, a frame, sashes therein for vertical reciprocation, a
pit in the lower part of a frame, a bi-partite cover for said pit having recesses in its outer ends for engaging the guide bars in said frame, and water-proofing means between said guide bars and plates in the recesses thereof.
3. In a window construction a frame, a pit formed therein, a cover for said pit composed of two parts hinged together at theirl meeting ends, a pair of locking arms pivotally attached to the underside of said cover, links pivoted to said arms at one end and guide sockets in which the other ends of said links are displaceable, springs for controlling the movements of said arms, an operating lever connected to one of said arms, and a front end or handle jointed to the body of the lever to engage normally the front face of the pit wall.
4. In a window construction of the class described, a window frame, a pit formed in its lower part, a sill, a bi-partite cover formed therewith, means for providing a moisture-proof closure for said pit, a hinge foi connecting both parts of said cover, locking arms pivotally secured to the underside' of said cover, and feet foimed with said arms
