Description

June 6, 1950 I A. w. MCDONALD 2,510,827
HINGE MEANS Filed March ll, 1947 2 Sheets-Sheet l June 6, 1950 A; w. MCDONALD HINGE MEANS 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 Filed March ll, 1947 AAA 7 3N M W MM Patented June 6, 1959 ll Ciairn.
The object of my invention is to provide a novel hinged door which will stand considerable weight without getting out of shape and provide a novel multiple hinge having a common pintle and having one set of hinge leaves welded to a metal moulding on the edge portion of the inner door whereby the door is reinforced.
It is also an object of my invention to have one set of the leaves fastened to the main door and another set of hinge leaves welded to the moulding which is secured on the inner r screen door.
It isalso an especial object of my invention to provide double hinges for use on a main door and on a screen door of a trailer.
I attain these and other objects of my invention by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which,
Figure 1 is a perspective View showing the frame and the hinge members of the inner door;
Fig. 2 is a top plan View of both doors in closed position showing the relation of the hinges;
Fig. 3 is a horizontal section through the doors taken on a plane just above the hinge with the doors shown in full lines in partly open position and in dotted lines in closed position;
Fig. l is a view of a portion of the inner door and frame with the inner door in closed position and the outer door in open position to illustrate the reinforcing metal moulding 8 on the inner door; and
Fig. 5 is a detail perspective view of a portion of the doors showing how the hinges on the inner door are welded to the metal moulding on that door.
Like numerals designate like parts in each of the several views.
Referring to the drawings, there is illustrated a door frame l having an inner door 2 and an outer door 3. The outer door is mounted on the elongated hinged leaves it which extend the entire length of the door and of the door frame. The inner door 2 is mounted on a set of elongated hinged leaves e (of which three preferably are provided) and each of which has an end portion 6 bent at right angles and screwed to the inner door frame 2 while the elongated hinge leaf 5 is welded at 9 to an elongated, L-shaped mrfiilding 8 which is attached to the inner door frame, as shown in Figs. 4 and 5. Both hinges 5 for the inner door and hinges it for the outer door are mounted on a common pintle t.
By spot welding the hinges 5 to the moulding 8 affixed to the edge portion of the inner door,
that door is greatly strengthened so that it will 5 hinge eliminates the insecure construction of the hinges shown by the prior art and will insure that the inner or screen door will not sag but will continue to fit the door opening properly.
W hat I claim is:
In hinging means for mounting a pair of doors for a trailer, wherein the door frame carries the main door as the outer door and an inner door of screen characteristic, and wherein the doors are mounted for swinging movement on a common hinging pintle with the doors movable together or relatively to each other at will, a multiple hinging assembly having hinge leaves extending between door edges and the inner face of a jamb of the frame with the hinging pintle of the assembly exposed outwardly in proximity to the outer face of the main door, one of said hinge leaves being secured to the door jamb, the other hinge leaf being secured to the main outer door, said assembly extending throughout the vertical height of the main door with at least the leaf attached to the jamb of equal length to the length of the hinging pintle, leaf members for the inner door being mounted in spaced relation on said hinging pintle, knuckles being formed from the hinge leaves and leaf members and arranged to present a knuckle zone as a continuous succession of separate knuckles extending from end to end of the hinging pintle, the leaf members for the inner door each having a length extending from its knuckle to and over the edge faces of both doors with the free end of the member lbent laterally to overlie and be secured to the inner face of the inner door, each leaf member further including an underlying plate having its direction of length extending normal to the direction of length of the leaf member, said plate being positioned to overlie the edge face of the inner door and having a length to permit securing of the plate to such edge face and said plate and leaf member being welded together whereby the inner door may be prevented from sagging at its hinge mounting.
