CIGARETTE MAKING DEVICE Filed oct. 12, 1945 g, 4 www.
Patented Feb. 7, 1950 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE I CIGARETTE MAKING DEVICE e 'Harry Carter, North East, Pa. Application; october .12, 1945, serrer No.- 621,947
This invention relates to a cigarettemakin device and more particularlyto a devicev for forming an individualtube of cigarette paper and filling same with tobacco.
An object of this invention is to provide an improved cigarette making device having av tubular compartment for holding a charge of tobacco, the tubular compartment being adapted for insertion in a cigarette paper tube, and having plunger means for simultaneously ejecting 4the tobacco and paper froml the tubular compartment.
Another objectv ofthis invention is to provide a cigarette making device comprising a metallic scoop to gather up. a charge of tobacco wherein the scoop can be folded toforrn a tubular mold, the mold being adapted to be encircled with cigarette paper formed into a paper tube, and having means to withdraw the mold leaving the tobacco in the cigarette paper tube.
It is a further object of this invention to provide an improved device for making cigarettes by hand having a tubular mold for receiving a charge of tobacco within the mold and a cigarette paper tube around the mold, and having a plunger for ejecting the tobacco and a cylinder for ejecting the cigarette paper tube simultaneously to form a complete cigarette.
Other objects of this invention will appear from the following specification and claims and from the accompanying drawing illustrating the invention, wherein:
Figure 1 is a front elevational View of the cigarette making device showing the cigarette paper around the mold;
Figure 2 is a rear elevational View also showing the cigarette paper around the mold;
Figure 3 is a rear elevational View showing the mold in withdrawn position with the completed cigarette at the left;
Figure 4 is a sectional View showing the interior construction of the plunger and cylinder;
Figure 5 is an enlarged fragmentary sectional view showing the construction of the inter-connection between the mold, the plunger and the cylinder;
Figure 6 is a sectional view taken on line 6 5 of Figure 1; and
Figure 7 is a, sectional view taken on line 'I-'I of Figure 1 and showing the hinged construction of the mold.
Referring to the drawing, the cylinder I having iiared ends is closed ofi at the right end by a cap 2 and has a ring 3 fastened to the left end claim... (c1. isi-45').
.to cover the edgeof the cylinder. The cylinder I-is provided with a.v longitudinal slot 4 intermediate the ends of the cylinder, as shown in Figure 2. Surrounding the cylinder and slidablealong its length between cap 2 and ring 3 is a ring 5 formed with a pair of outwardly extending tabs. 6 and an inwardlyextending tab 1, struck outof the material. -The inwardly extending tab 'I extends into theslot 4 -to prevent the ring 5 from having rotary movement relative the cylinder I and yet permit relative longitudinal movement therewith.
, The interior of the cylinder has fixed therein along its axis a plunger 8 having a disc 9 wedged into xed position at the right end of the cylinder and having a head I0 fixed to the left end of the plunger 8 and spaced from the wall of the cylinder I. Slidable within the cylinder I is a tubular mold II being split longitudinally for the major portion of its length to form two substantially semi-circular sections hinged together at I2. One of the sections, denoted by the numeral I3, is integral with the tube II, and the other section is denoted by numeral I4. The tubular mold II is insertable in the cylinder I, as can be seen in Figure 4 and by dotted lines in Figure 2. When sections I3 and I4 are swung open, in the direction of the dotted arrows of Figure 7, they form a scoop which can be inserted in a tobacco pouch for scooping out a charge of tobacco., and when closed the sections I3 and I4 form a combination of tube II and are insertable as a unit in the cylinder I, as shown in Figure 3. The right end of tube II has an opening I5, in alignment with the slot 4, and the tab 'I projects through opening I5 so that when the ring 5 slides over the cylinder I. it carries the tubular mold II including the sections I3 and I4. Thus in Figure 2, the ring 5 and mold II are at their eXtreme left position and in Figure 3, these parts are in their extreme right position.
The cigarette making device of this invention is preferably made of metal but may also be constructed of any rigid material.
In operation, the ring 5 is pushed to its extreme forward position, as shown in Figure 1, and the sections I3 and I4 are swung open to form a scoop. The scoop is inserted into a can of tobacco or a tobacco pouch to remove a charge of tobacco which is spread evenly on the scoop. The sections I3 and I4 are then closed forming a tubular mold. Then a sheet of cigarette paper I6 is wrapped around the tubular mold and the Then with the forenger and second nger 5 pressing against the forward side of the tabs 6 and the thumb pressing on cap 2, the fingers and thumb are pressed together causing the ring 5 to move .baokwardlyarryingthe mold. I I, with sections I3 fand 'I4 -within the cylinder I Iwhile the head I on plunger 8 prevents the tobacco from moving back. At the same time, the ring 3 on cylinder I prevents the paper tube I6 from moving back, so that when the ring "Sweaclres its extreme backward position, as Ashown;indigure 3, the tobacco'is left in the paper tube and the cigarette is formed. Inther words;the' mold is withdrawn While means are provided to hold the tobacco and paper inthe original position. If desired, the ring can be held stationary while invention has been shown, it will: be understood that lvariousV modifications may be -rnade 'within the spirit of the v invention. Therefore no limitations 'on the inventionv are 'intended Aother than are imposed bythe scope'o'f the-'appended claim.
A cigarette-makin'gfdevice comprising a cylinder, a" plunger'fixed' to 'and 'within' said cylinder, aring slidable on said'cylinderfsaidringhav- `in'g -a `pair -'of outwardly-extendin'g 'tabs struck 35 out ofthe-material thereof, saidtabsipmviding `nger grips :to l:fm'silitate "sliding A"movement 'f :said ring'over said-cylinder,eaxlongitirdinal 'slot in said'cylinden-a lug on' said ringmaidlugbein'g struck out of the material of said ring and projecting inwardly through said slot, a tubular mold telescopically connected to said cylinder, said mold being split along part of its length to form two semi-circular sections, a hinge for connecting said sections, said hinge being formed internally of said mold, whereby when said sections are in open position they are adapted to form .arscooprfor scoopingacharge of tobacco lffromia source :of t0bacco,fandwhen in closed position,`they are adapted to receive a cigarette paper tube therearound, said plunger having a notched portion for clearing said hinge, said mold 'havingfani'opening in the unsplit portion thereof,
said1ugextending through said opening, whereby when"the 'mld is filled with tobacco and a oiga v:fetterpapebtibe is :tted over said mold, movement of said ring along said cylinder causes s-fd'mold to be withdrawn to a position within the cylinder while said cylinder ejects the paper tbe-andfsaid'plunger ejectsthe'tobacco to form `a"completedcigarette.
