('01. 131-175) My invention relates to improvements in cigarette holders, the principal object in View being to provide a simply constructed device of this character adapted to hold a cigarette in a manner such that cigarette smoking is rendered safe in bed, in automobiles, or in any other place in which cigarette sparks are liable to cause fires, and which may be deposited on tables, or other furniture, while the cigarette is lighted without any fire hazards or ashes falling onto the furniture.

Other and subordinate objects are also comprehended by my invention, all of which, together with the precise nature of my improvements, will be readily understood when the succeeding description and claims are read with reference to the drawings accompanying and forming part of this specification.

Referring to the drawings by numerals, and first to Figures 1 to 5 thereof, my improved cigarette holder comprises a mouth bit I having an enlarged outer cylindrical end 2 stepped down to provide a reduced intermediate shouldered portion 3 and a further reduced shouldered outer portion 4. The portions 3 and 4 are bored axially for the insertion of one end of a cigarette 5 therein with a friction grip. A draft counterbore extends from the first-mentioned bore 6, as at l, to the mouth end of the bit I.

An inner cylindrical shell 8 suitably perforated,

as at 9, and having a closed outer end i0 is fitted at its inner end over the reduced portion 4 with a friction fit. A similar larger outer shell H is fitted at its inner end over the reduced portion 3. As will be understood, the inner and outer shells 8, I l, are of the requisite length to accommodate the portion of a cigarette 5 extending outof the bore 6. A cylindrical nutv 12 extends outwardly through the closed ends of theinner and outer shells 8, H into a rounded end guard l3 opposed to the closed end of the outer shell ll, said nut having a flanged inner end It abutting the closed end of the inner shell 8. A screw I5 is extended through the guard I3 into the nut I2 whereby said guard is detachably secured to the closed end of the outer shell I I. The outer shell is crimped substantially midway of its ends to provide a circumferential reinforcing peripheral rib l6 thereon. A pair of spacer rings ll surround the inner shell 8 adjacent opposite ends thereof to maintain the shells 8 and H in concentrically spaced relation. A Washer 18 on the nut I 2 may be interposed between the outer ends of the inner and outer shells 8 and II for a purpose which will be apparent. A sleeve IQ of soft material is provided on the outer shell ll around the inner end portion thereof for providing a comfortable hand grip.

An elongated strip-like ejector slide 2!) is mounted at its inner end in the bore 6 with its outer end extending out of said bore into the inner shell 8, and it is provided with a right angled hand grip lug 20 for manipulating the same. Intermediate its ends, said slide is provided with a right angled ejector lug 2| adapted to be disposed behind the inner end of the cigarette 5. The inner end of the ejector slide is slidably mounted in a longitudinal slot 22 provided in the outer end 2 of the bit I and provided with a longitudinal guide slot 23 through which a pin 24 extends, said pin being inserted transversely into the outer end of the bit I and through said slot.

As will now be seen, the inner and outer shells 8 and II form guards around the cigarette 5 preventing any sparks from escaping from the holder so that the fire hazard in smoking is eliminated, while at the same time sufiicient air may enter the shells to provide for proper combustion. The shells 8 and Il may be pulled 01f the outer end 2 of the bit I, as a unit, together with the sleeve l9 whenever it is desired to eject a cigarette butt from the bore 6 and insert a new cigarette. By pulling the ejector slide 20 outwardly through the medium of the hand grip lug 20, the cigarette butt will be picked up by the ejector lug 2i and may be easily and quickly ejected from the bore 6.

In the modified form of the holder shown in Figure 6, the outer end 25 of the mouth bit 26 is provided with an internal groove 21' into which the inner end of the outer shell 28 is fitted. Otherwise the construction and arrangement is the same as described with reference to the previouslydescribed. preferred form of the invention.

In the modified embodiment shown in Figures '7 to 11, the construction is the same as in the preferred embodiment with the exception that the inner and outer shells 29, 38 are provided adjacent the front ends thereof with .apair ofside openings 3|, 32, respectively, adapted to be registered by rotation of th'eouter shell 30 relative to the inner one so that the holder may be opened as shown in Figure 10 for the insertion of a match into theinnershell 29 to light a cigarette 33. Obviously, by rotating the outer shell 30 from a, position 'in which said openings 3|, 32 register the holderv-may be closed after the cigarette has been lit, as shown in Figure 9. The foregoing will, it is believed, suff1ce to impart a clear understanding of my invention without. further explanation.

Manifestly, the invention is susceptible of modification in other respects than as herein set forth without departing from the inventive concept, and right is herein reserved to such other modifications as fall within the scope of the appended claim.

What I claim is:

A cigarette holder comprising a mouth bit having an outer end bore for the insertion of one end of a cigarette therein, said outer end being stepped down and providing a pair of relatively large and small annular shoulders concentric to said bore, a pair of relatively large and small outer and inner perforated shells extending from said bit in spaced apart relation and having open inner ends sleeved onto said large and small shoulders, respectively, and thereby maintained in concentric relation, the outer ends of the shells being closed, and means to connect said outer ends in concentric relation comprising a tubular internally threaded and flanged nut extending axially through said closed ends with the flange innermost, a cap piece opposed to the outer end of the outer shell, a screw extended'through said cap piece and threaded into said nut, and a washer on said nut between the outer ends of the shells.
