N'rnn STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES HARMON BOCK, OF SHERMAN HEIGHTS, TENNESSEE, ASSIGNOR TO I. S. GRIFFITH, OF CI-IATTANOOGA, TENNESSEE.
CIGARETTE-FORMER.
- SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 626,265, dated June 6, 1899.
Application filed April 12', 1898. Serial No. 677,306. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, J Auras HARMON 13001;, a citizen of the United States, residing at Sherman Heights, in the county of Hamilton 5 and State of Tennessee, have invented a new and useful Cigarette-Frmer, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to cigarette-formers, and has for its object to provide a simple, com- IO pact, and eflicient device of the class named adapted to be carried convenientlyin the vestpocket.
Further objects and advantages of this invention will appear in the following descrip- I tion, and the novel features thereof will be particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a cigarette-former constructed in ac :0 cordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section of the same. Fig. 3 is a detail view in perspective of the slide and plunger. Fig. 4 is a detail view of a portion of the blank from which the slide and plunger are constructed.
Similar numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures of the drawings.
The cigarette-former embodying my invention consists, essentially, of a tube 1, terminating at one end in a milled head 2 and at the other end being open, with a serrated edge, as indicated at 3, said tube being longitudinally slotted, as shown at 4. Mounted 5 upon the tube is a slide consisting of an exterior milled sleeve 5, having an ear 6 extending through the longitudinal slot 4, and a plunger or follower 7, carried by said ear,
the head of the plunger consisting of a disk 8, fitting approximately in the bore of the tube and adapted to press the contents into a cigarette-wrapper 9, which is fitted exteriorly upon the tube. In operation the slide is drawn back to the extremity of the slot and the serrated extremity or inlet end of the tube is inserted into a quantity of tobacco and is pressed forward and twisted to cause the tobacco to feed thereinto as into a hollow auger. Then a sufficient quantity has'been accumulated in the tube, a cigarette-wrapper is wound around the tube exteriorly and is mois tened to cause the overlapping edges thereof to adhere, after which the plunger is advanced to force the tobacco out and at the same time push the wrapper from the outlet end of the tube, a member of the slide, preferably the sleeve 5, serving to bear against the contigu ous end of the wrapper and advance the same as the plunger is moved.
The tube may be constructed of sheet metal or may be drawn, as preferred, and the slide may be constructed of a single blank of sheet metal, the head of the plunger being formed by doubling the blank upon itself, as inclicated in Fig. 3.
Various changes in the form, proportion, and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention. 7
Having described my invention, what I claim is l. A cigarette-former comprising a tube adapted for containing tobacco, and a slide mounted upon the tube forlongitudinal movc- 7 5 ment, and having an interior plunger or follower, for advancing the contents of the tube into a Wrapper, and an exterior sleeve for simultaneously advancing the Wrapper, as the contents of the tube are fed thereinto, substantially as specified. i
2. A cigarette-former comprising a longitudinally-slotted tube, and a slide mounted upon the tube for longitudinal movement, and consisting of an exterior sleeve having an car projecting through the slot, and a plunger or follower carried by the inclosed portion of the ear and operating in the bore of the tube, said sleeve being adapted to bear against the edge of and advance a wrapper as the contents of the tube are forced thereinto, substantially as specified.
3. A cigarette-former comprising a tube provided at one extremity with a serrated edge to form a hollow auger and having a lon- 9 5 gitudinal slot, and a slide mounted upon the tube and comprising an exterior sleeve to bear against and advance a Wrapper, an ear projecting inwardly through said slot, and a plunger or follower carried by the ear and oploo crating in the bore of the tube, substantially as specified.
4. A cigarette-former comprising a tube provided with a longitudinal slot, and a slide mounted upon the tube for longitudinal movement'and constructed from a single blank of sheet metal, said slide having an exterior sleeve fitted upon the tube to displace an encircling wrapper, an inwardly-extending ear operating in the slot of the tube, and a plunger or follower having ahead-consisting of a disk integral with the said ear and folded upon itself to occupy a transverse position in the bore of the tube, substantially as speci- WVitnesses:
