(Cl. 131-191) This invention relates to new and useful improvements in smoking devices for use particularly with cigarettes and has for its primary object to provide, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, a device of this character comprising novel means for expeditiously removing the usual paper wrapper of a cigarette preparatory to smoking the tobacco thereof.

Another important object of the present invention is to provide a smoking device of the aforementioned character which embodies means for slitting the wrapper on two diametrically opposite sides simultaneously and from end to end of the cigarette whereby the complete removal of said wrapper is facilitated.

Still another important object of the invention is to provide a smoking device of the character described comprising means for retaining all of the tobacco of the cigarette as the paper wrapper thereof is removed.

These together with other objects and advantages which will become subsequently apparent reside in the details of construction and operation as more fully hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming a part hereof, wherein like numerals refer to like parts throughout, and in which:

FIGURE 1 is a perspective view of a smoking device constructed in accordance with the present invention, showing the holder and the wrapper cutter separated;

FIGURE 2 is a perspective view of the forward portion of the holder, showing a cigarette being inserted therein;

FIGURE 3 is a perspective view of a portion of the device with a portion broken away, showing the cutter being applied to the loaded holder;

FIGURE 4 is a fragmentary view in perspective of the forward end portion of the loading device, showing a half section of the cigarette wrapper being removed;

FIGURE 5 is a view in transverse section on an enlarged scale through the cutter, taken substantially on the line 55 of FIGURE 1;

FIGURE 6 is a cross-sectional view, taken substantially on the line 66 of FIGURE 4; and

FIGURE 7 is a fragmentary view in longitudinal section, taken substantially on the line 77 of FIGURE 4.

Referring now to the drawing in detail, it will be seen that the embodiment of the present invention which has been illustrated comprises a mouthpiece 8 of hard rubber or other suitable material, which mouthpiece may be of any desired dimensions. Fixedly mounted in the forward end portion of the mouthpiece 8 and projecting forwardly therefrom is a tube 9 of suitable material. The tube 9 is of an inside diameter to slidably receive a conventional cigarette as indicated at 10 and of a length slightly less than that of said cigarette. The tube 9 includes a pair of duplicate opposed complemental half-sections 11 which are spaced from each other in a manner to define a pair of diametrically opposite, longitudinal slots 12.

Slidably and removably mounted on the tube 9 is a wrapper cutter 13. The cutter 13, in the embodiment shown, comprises a tube 14 of suitable material of an inside diameter to slidably receive the tube 9. The tube 14 is of a length corresponding to the length of the exposed portion of the tube 9.

Mounted longitudinally in the tube 14 and extending from end to end thereof is a pair of opposed, diametrically opposite blades of suitable material. The blades 15 are slidable longitudinally in the slots 12 and are adapted to project therethrough into the tube 9. Mounted be- 3,158,158 Patented Nov. 24, 1964 tween the outer or forward end portions of the blades 15 in inwardly spaced, concentric relation to the corresponding end portion of the tube 14 is a tobacco retaining disk or plate 16 as shown in FIGURES 4 and 7 of the drawing, which disk or plate may be of any suitable material.

In use, with the cutter 13' removed, the cigarette 10 is inserted longitudinally in the tube 9 in the manner shown in FIGURE 2 of the drawing. With the blades 15 engaged in the slots 12 the tube 14 is slipped longitudinally on the tube 9 (FIGURE 3), said tube 14 being brought into end-abutting engagement with the forward end of the mouthpiece 8. The blades 15, traveling in the slots 12 and projecting into the tube 9, slit the usual paper wrapper 17 of the cigarette 10 on diametrically opposite sides. The disk 16 enters the wrapper 17 and slightly compresses the tobacco 18 of the cigarette it in the manner shown in FIGURE 7 of the drawing. In this manner the half sections of the wrapper are caused to project sufficiently from the tube 9 to permit them to be grasped and pulled outwardly between the disk 16 and said tube 9, leaving all of the tobacco in the tube 9 to be smoked, said tobacco being retained by said disk. The tobacco 18 is now ready to be smoked. The space between the disk 16 and the tube 9 is ample for the passage of the wrapper and for permitting the tobacco to be ignited. The disk 16 is also adapted to retain ashes, thus promoting safety. The mouthpiece 8' and the cutter 13 may be suitably colored and ornamented if desired. When in use the device has the general appearance of a cigarette holder. The construction of the device is such that it may be easily cleaned and maintained in a highly sanitary condition at all times.

The foregoing is considered as illustrative only of the principles of the invention. Further, since numerous modifications and changes will readily occur to those skilled in the art, it is not desired to limit the invention to the exact construction and operation shown and described, and accordingly all suitable modifications and equivalents may be resorted to, falling within the scope of the invention as claimed.

What is claimed as new is as follows:

1. A smoking device comprising a first tube for the reception of a cigarette, said tube having at least one longitudinal slot therein, a second tube slidable on the first-named tube, and a cutter in the second-named tube operable in the slot and engageable therethrough with a cigarette in the first named tube for longitudinally slitting the wrapper thereof to facilitate removal of said wrapper.

2. A smoking device in accordance with claim 1, together with means in the second-named tube for retaining the tobacco of the cigarette in the first-named tube while the wrapper is being removed.

3. A smoking device in accordance with claim 2, wherein said means includes a disk mounted in the secondnamed tube for engagement with the tobacco on one end of the cigarette.

4. A smoking device in accordance with claim 3, said disk being spaced concentrically from the second-named tube forthe passage of the wrapper therebetween.

5. A smoking device comprising telescopic inner and outer tubes, said inner tube being adapted to receive a cigarette, said device being adapted at one end thereof for insertion in the mouth of a smoker, said inner tube having longitudinal slots therein, and blades in the outer tube operable in the slots and engageable therethrough with a cigarette in the inner tube for longitudinally slitting the cigarette wrapper to facilitate its removal.

6. A smoking device in accordance with claim 5, together with means for retaining the cigarette tobacco in the inner tube while the wrapper is being removed.

7. A smoking device in accordance with claim 6, said means comprising a disk mounted on and between the blades for engagement with the tobacco in one end of the cigarette.

8. A smoking device in accordance with claim 7, said disk being spaced concentrically from the outer tube for the passage of the wrapper therebetween.

9. A smoking device comprising a mouthpiece, a first tube for the reception of a cigarette and projecting longitudinally from said mouthpiece, said tube having longitudinal slots therein, an outer tube slidable on the firstnamed tube, blades mounted longitudinally in said outer tube and operable in the slots for slitting the wrapper of the cigarette in said first tube preparatory to the removal of said Wrapper, and a disk in the outer tube engageable with one end of the cigarette for retaining the tobacco thereof during removal of the wrapper.

10. A smoking device comprising a mouthpiece, a first tube for the reception of a cigarette and projecting longitudinally from said mouthpiece, said tube having longitudinal slots therein, an outer tube slidable on the firstnamed tube, blades mounted longitudinally in said outer 2 tube and operable in the slots for slitting he wrapper of the cigarette in said first tube preparatory to the removal of said wrapper, and a disk in the outer tube engageable with one end of the cigarette for retaining the tobacco thereof during removal of the wrapper, said disk being mounted on and between the blades in spaced, concentric relation to the outer tube for the passage of the Wrapper therebetween.

Claims

10. A SMOKING DEVICE COMPRISING A MOUTHPIECE, A FIRST TUBE FOR THE RECEPTION OF A CIGARETTE AND PROJECTING LONGITUDINALLY FROM SAID MOUTHPIECE, SAID TUBE HAVING LONGITUDINAL SLOTS THEREIN, AN OUTER TUBE SLIDABLE ON THE FIRSTNAMED TUBE, BLADES MOUNTED LONGITUDINALLY IN SAID OUTER TUBE AND OPERABLE IN THE SLOTS FOR SLITTING HE WRAPPER OF THE CIGARETTE IN SAID FIRST TUBE PERPARATORY TO THE REMOVAL OF SAID WRAPPER, AND A DISK IN THE OUTER TUBE ENGAGEABLE WITH ONE END OF THE CIGARETTE FOR RETAINING THE TOBACCO THEREOF DURING REMOVAL OF THE WRAPPER, SAID DISK BEING MOUNTED ON AND BETWEEN THE BLADES IN SPACED, CONCENTRIC RELATION TO THE OUTER TUBE FOR THE PASSAGE OF THE WRAPPER THEREBETWEEN.
