BATHTUB HEAD REST I Filed Feb. 28, 1946 FIIIIIII I/l/IIA Inventor SYDNEY a. REAGAN sn.
Attorneys Patented July 29, 1947 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE BATHTUB HEADREST Sydney 0. Reagan, Sr., Arlington, Va. Application February 28, 1946, Serial No. 650,941
1 My invention has reference to novel and useful improvements in a bath tub head rest and more explicitly pertains to a superior manner of adjustably positioning a head-support upon the sides of a bath tub.
The objects of the invention are the provision of a device having an improved means for attaching the article to the sides of a tub, which means permits ready vertical adjustment, prevents turning and disengagement of the attachment with the tub, prevents loosening of the adjusting means, obviates damage to the tub finish by the device and withal is inexpensive, easily installed and adjusted, efiicient in operation and a great accommodation to bathers and the like.
The above and numerous other objects of the invention which will become apparent as the following description proceeds, are attained by my invention, one embodiment only of which has been illustrated, merely by way of example, in the accompanying drawings, wherein: 1
Figure 1 is a perspective View of the invention applied to a bath tub shown in phantom construction;
Figure 2 is an enlarged perspective detail of a portion of the adjustable fastening means; and Figure 3 is a side elevation of the invention.
Specific reference is now made to the annexed drawings, in which l denotes generally my improved head rest, shown mounted upon a bath tub, indicated generally by l2. The device consists of a tray-like support having a base l4, surrounded at the back and on both sides by a peripheral rim l6, which may be integral with or separately formed and mechanically attached to the base, the rim l6 being open at the front. This base is of a convenient depth to comfortably accommodate and support the head of the user, and extends substantially the width of the conventional bath tub, except for clearances to receive attachin lugs in a manner to be subsequently described.
Recognition should now be made that my head rest may be fabricated from any suitable material which will not rust or stain the bath tub, rustproof sheet metal, plastics or a combination of various materials being envisioned as satisfactory for my purposes.
Rigidly secured to the marginal rim 16 as by welding [8 or in any other reliable manner, are a plurality of supporting brackets or lugs 20, which may be formed of metal and may conveniently take the form of U-shaped brackets, attached by their ends to the side of the flange or rim. Although various suitable locations for I 9 Claims. (01. 4-185) attachment may be utilized, I preferably employ one support centrally mounted on the back, and one at each side, positioned forwardly of the middle transverse plane of the device, to give increased stability to the arrangement. A plurality of buffers. or pads 22 of rubber, fibre or the like are attached to or socketed in the side wall 24 of the bracket 20 and act to prevent contact of the metallic bracket with the porcelain sides of the tubs to avoid marring and chipping the surface of the latter. as well as serving to give a superior gripping action of the bracket upon the tub.
The bracket 20 is provided with aligned apertures 26 of square or polygonal cross section in its ends, fora purpose to be now set forth. Each bracket isprovided with an adjustable support, consisting, of a vertical upper member 28 of cross section corresponding to the shape of aperture 26 and slidably disposed in the upper aperture. An integral, laterally extending arm 30, suitablyencased by protective cushion 32 which may be permanently or detachably secured thereon, provides means for attaching the support 28 to the rim' of a bath tub. Depending from the support 28 is a rounded reduced screw threaded portion 34, loosely extending through the lower aperture 26. A wing type of adjusting nut 36 has an upper shoulder portion 38, squared or of cross section corresponding to that of aperture 26 and is threaded upon the extension 34 and is snugly receivably, in sliding relation, in the lower aperture 26.
Referring again to Figure 1, it will be seen that the base I4 is dished or depressed along its longitudinal axis to form a concave portion 40, whose configuration is such as to comfortably receive and support the head of the user. A suitable cushion or pad member, indicated by dotted lines at 42, is cemented or secured to the base to contribute to the enjoyment and well being of the user.
From the foregoing, the operation of my invention will be readily understood. The head rest is placed in a tub in the position depicted in Figure 1, with the cushioned arms 38 supporting the base from the rim of the tub l2. To adjust the base l4 to the proper height for the individual user, the base l4 and bracketsZfi are raised, the upper aperture 26 sliding upwards upon the square guide surfaces 28 of the supports, and the lower apertures 26 sliding up and oil the squared shoulders 38 of the Wing nuts 36. The latter are now adjusted to their desired position and the base lowered until the lower apertures 36 again
