BATH-TUB.
952 979 Specification of Letters Patent. Patented J 11119, 28, 1910.
Application filed March 12, 1909. Serial No. 483,010.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, PEARL lWIUssnLMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Billings, in the county of Yellowstone and State of Montana, have invented new and useful Improvements in Bath-Tubs, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention provides a novel tub and attachments therefor designed most especially for bathing invalids and infants, thereby lessening the efiorts usually required to accomplish this result.
This invention enables the infant to be placed in the water in a restful and comfortable position and avoids the care and handling generally necessitated to give an infant a bath.
For a full understanding of the invention reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings and the appended description, said invention consisting of the novel features, details of construction and combinations of parts particularly pointed out in the ap pended claim.
Referring to the accompanying drawings forming a part of the specification: Figure 1 is a side view of a bath tube embodying the invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical, central longitudinal section of the bath tub showing the same in use. Fig. 3 is a top plan view of the invention. Fig. a is a perspec tive view of a modification. Fig. 5 is a detail section of one of the clips and parts gripped thereby on the line aw of Fig. 1, showing the same on a larger scale.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in the views of the drawings by the same reference characters.
The tub 1 is oblong and provided at one end with a long slanting portion 2 which is adapted to receive and support the body of the infant or invalid to be bathed. The base 8 is extended at one end as shown at 4., the extension coming beneath the slanting end 2 so as to prevent tipping of the tub when the same is in use by the weight of the bather coming upon the inclined end 2. For convenience, a series of receptacles are applied to the outer side of the tub to receive toilet supplies and sundry articles such as soap, powder, brushes, wash clothes and the like.
A seat 5 is provided within the tub near the lower portion of the inclined or slanting end 2. A head rest 6 is also supplied and supported upoirthe inclined end 2 of the tub near the upper end thereof. The head rest and seat are relatively adjustable to vary the space between them to suit the size of the infant or invalid to be bathed. The seat and head rest may be attached to the tub or formed separate therefrom and applied thereto. As indicated most clearly in Figs. 2 and 3 the seat 5 is attached to the inclined end 2 of the tub whereas the head rest 6 is separate and carried by a frame 7 which is adjustably connected to the upper portion of the inclined end 2, said frame being ap proximately of U form and constructed of a stout wire or light rod bent upon itself and having its end portions connected by a tie S to which the head rest 6 is attached. The head rest 6 may consist of any yieldable material, sponge being preferred. The frame 7 rests upon the inclined end 2 as indicated in Figs. 2 and 8 and is secured in the adjusted position by any suitable fastening means. As shown, hooks 9 engage the outer bead or reinforced edge 10 of the tub and clips 11 engage both the hooks 9 and the side members of the frame 7, said clips having double gripping ends and an intermediate set screw 12 whereby both parts 7 and 9 are simultaneously loosened or gripped. WVhen the fastenings 12 are loosened the frame 7 may be moved up or carried thereby in convenient and proper position to receive the head of the bather as indicated in Fig. 2.
In the construction shown in Fig. l the invention is provided in the form of an attachmentand may be applied to any tub, said attachment consisting of a frame 13, a seat let and a head rest 15. The seat 1& is secured to one end of the frame whereas the head rest 15 is adjustable upon the frame and adapted to be secured at the located position. The head rest 15 comprises a tie 16 which may consist of a plate the outer edge portions of which are formed into rolls or sleeves to receive the side members of the frame 13. A set screw 17 applied to the head rest 15 serves to secure the same in an adjusted position. The end portions of the side members comprising the frame 13 are bent as indicated at 18 to engage under the art of the tub to which the attachment may be fitted so as to retain said attachment in place. Set screws 19 are fitted in threaded down to bring the head rest openings formed in the extremities of the bent ends 18 and are adapted to secure the attachment in the adjusted position.
From the foregoing it will be understood that the invention provides simple and effective means for conveniently and comfortably supporting an infant or invalid in position for bathing. The invention obviates in a great measure the handling and anxiety usually attending the bathing of an infant since the tub may be utilized as supporting means in conjunction with the seat and rest, the parts being relatively adjustable to adapt the bather to the depth of water or to other existing conditions.
Having thus described the invention what is claimed, is
In combination, a bat-h tub having a por tion formed With a long slant and having a base extended beneath the slanting portion to give stability to the tub, and a seat and head rest provided upon the slanting portion of the tub.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
PEARL MUSSELMAN.
