3 Claims.
This is a division of my application for patent on a Printing press, Serial No. 84,244, filed June 9, 1936.
The principal objects of the invention are to provide a convenient drive whereby the shifting of a single gear on each impression cylinder of color press will reverse the printing couple so that the couples may be driven both in one direction, or in the other direction, or in opposing directions, as desired, and to provide compact gearing sothat in printing four colors there is a minimum difficulty experienced in maintaining register between the four printing cylinders.
will appear hereinafter.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawing, in which Fig. 1 is an end view of the driving arrangement for a color unit constructed according to this invention;
Fig. 2 shows one combination of gearing in which the top sides of the impression cylinders are running toward each other;
Fig. 3 shows the opposite combination where the top sides of the impression cylinders are running away from each other; I
Fig. 4 shows a combination where both impression cylinders turn to the left, as viewed from the top, and
Fig. 5 shows a combination where both impression cylinders turn to the right, as viewed from the top.
A color unit is shown printing on two webs in two colors. It includes two separated impres- 35 sion cylinders 3 and 4 and in this instance four plate cylinders 5, 6, I and 8 and suitable ink motions are used.
While the impression cylinders 3 and 4' are" relatively close together there is sufficient clearance provided between them through which two webs, as for example W and W may be led. It is obvious that no printing is done on'these two webs when they are led between the impression cylinders, as shown. The purpose is merely to Other objects and advantages of the invention permit the placement in the desired location of Divided and this application March 1 to the impression cylinders 4 and} respectively so that they can be movedaxially and drive these two cylinders. In the case of the intermediate gear 30, on the shaft 28, it can mesh with the gear 32 on the cylinder 3 in the position shown in Fig. 2 but can also mesh with the gear 3!. Thus, it will be seen that a reversible drive may be provided for the impression cylinders 3 and 4. This driving arrangement provides a very flexible device which may be used to drive the'impression cylinders 3 and 4 in the various combinations shown. v
An arrangement is shown where two colors are added to one side of each of t W "and W A new and useful arrangement is employed whereby additional colors may be applied to the webs substantially at will and a simple, inex-" pensive and compact arrangement is shown for driving the press rolls.
Having thus described'my invention and the advantages thereof, I do not wish to be limited to the details herein disclosed, otherwise than as set forth in the claims, but what I claim is: g
1. The combination of a printing unit in twoseparated parts, each comprising an impression he two webs cylinder having studs and a plurality of printing I cylinders, sliding gears on the studs of said impression cylinders, means for driving said gears in opposite directions, and two shafts between the impression cylinders, said sliding gears on said studs being adapted to move into mesh with either of said gears to render it possible to run either impression cylinder in either direction. 2. The combination with a printing unit including two impression cylinders in juxtaposb tion, plate cylinders'for cooperating with the im pression cylinders, two driving gears running in opposite directions, and one gear mounted on each impression cylinder, either or both of which gears may be moved into mesh with either of said two driving gears to obtain the desired direction of rotation of said impression cylinders.
3. The combination with a printing unit including two impression cylinders in juxtaposition, plate cylinders for cooperating with the imeach impression cylindeneither or both of which may be moved into mesh with either of said two driving gears to obtain the desired direction of rotation andmeans for lead ing webs between the two impression cylinders; I
