1'? Claims.
My invention relates to printing presses and has for its object the provision of a new and improved form and arrangement of auxiliary printing means for applying color printing upon both faces of any selected one of the several webs from the dilferent press units at selected portions of said web. It is one of the objects of my invention to provide an arrangement of this type comprising means for-slitting the selected web longitudinally and applying color printing uponone face of one web portion for providing a colored outside page and applying color printing upon the oppo site face of the other web portion for providing a colored inside page.
It is one of the objects of my invention to provide an improved arran ement of impressioncylinder means and co-operating form cylinder means by reason of which the'opposite end portions of said cylinders at opposite sides of the press are adapted to operate in opposite directions for effecting the desired printing on opposite faces of parallel arranged web. portions without the necessity for shifting either of the web portions transversely or otherwise diverting such web portion from its normal straight run by means of angle bars or the like. I
It is one of the objects of my invention to provide an improved arrangement of auxiliary printing means of this type which the form and the impression cylinders at opposite sides of the press are supported by the same transverseshafts, with the cylinders at one side of the press revolubly mounted upon the shafts while each of the cylinders at the opposite side of the press is rotatable with the shaft which it is supported, means being preferably providedfor driving the loosely mounted cylinder members by power from one or core of the shafts by which such cylinders are supported. I I
It is another object of my invention to improve devices of this type in sundry/details with respect to the inking mechanism and otherparts as hereinafter specifically described. The preferred means by which I have accomplished my several objects are illustrated in the drawings and are hereinafter specifically described. That which I believe to be new and desire to cover by Letters Patent is set forth in the claims.

Referring now. to the several figures of the drawings, in which corresponding parts are indicated by the same reference characters, 10, 11 and 12 indicate unit press frames each having two printing couples mounted thereon, each of which printing couples comprises an impression cylinder 13 and 'a form cylinder 14. In the arrangement shown, the several press units are arranged side by side in alignment with each other, the unit frames 10, 11 and 12 being connected at their upper ends by longitudinally extending frame bars 15. Each of the press units is equipped with the ordinary operating mechanism for perfecting a web, the greater part ofsuch mechanism being omitted for clearness of illustration. In the arrangement shown webs 16, 17 and 18 are shown being perfected by the respective units. A framework 19 is shown rising from the longitudinally extending'frame bars 15 at one end of the portion of the press shown, such framework 19 being provided for a folding mechanism of any approved. type.
In the arrangement shown in Fig. 1, the showing is quite diagrammatic, no framework being included for the auxiliary printing means. It will be understood that the operative parts comprising the auxiliary printing mechanism are supported by any suitable framework, portions of which are shown in Figs. 2 and 6 Above the units. comprising the unit frames 10, 11 and 121 have mounted a heavy shaft 20 in position parallel with 'the cylinders 13 and i l and directly thereabove .so that any one of the webs 16, 17 or 18 can be directed to the auxiliary printing mechanism carried by shaft 210 and its 7 associated supporting means. Upon the shaft 20 I have mounted impression cylinders 21 and 22 (see Fig.2), the; cylinder 21 being keyed upon the shaft 20 as shown in Fig. 6, whilethe cylinder 22 is revolubly mounted with respect to said shaft.
In spaced relation about the shaft 20 and the cylinders 21 and 22, I have provided a set of heavy shafts 23, 24, and 26, upon each of which are mounted two form cylinders in end to end relation, as is clearly shown in Fig. 2. In the arrangement shown, the form cylinders upon the shaft 23 are indicated by the numerals 27 and 28; those upon the shaft 24 by the numerals 29 and those upon the shaft 25 by the numerals 31 and 32, and those upon the shaft 26 by the numerals 33 and 34. As is clearly shown in Fig. 6, the cylinders 27 and 33 are keyed upon the shafts 23 and 26 respectively, and the cylinders 29 and 31 are in like manner keyed upon the shafts 24 and 25. Each of the cylinders 28, 30, 32 and 34 is revolubly mounted with respect to the shaft upon which it is mounted and by which it is supported as above set forth.
As is clearly shown in Fig. 2, the shafts 20, 23, 24, 25 and 26 are connected together for rotation in cooperative relation by means of gears 35, 36, 3'7, 38 and 39 respectively, by which the cylinders are caused torotate in co-operative relation as indicated by the arrows thereon in said Fig. 2. Power is applied for driving the gear preferably by means of a spur gear 40 meshing with the gear 35 (see Fig. 2), such spur gear 46 being driven by short shaft 41 which in turn is driven by a shaft'42 connected thereto by means of beveled gears 43.
The means provided for driving the cylinders 22, 28, 30, 32 and 34 comprises a gear 44 keyed upon the opposite end of the shaft 20 from that at which the gear 35 is mounted, such gear 44 meshing with an idler gear 45 which in turn meshes with a gear 46 mounted upon a short shaft 47 which at its inner end is provided with a gear 48. The gear 48 in turn meshes with a gear 49 connected with the cylinder 22 by means of'a sleeve 50, the arrangement being such that the cylinders 21 and 22 are driven at the same speed but in the opposite directions. The cylinders 28, 30, 32 and 34 are driven in cooperative relation with respect to the cylinder 22 by means of gears 51, 52, 53 and 54 which are connected respectively with the cylinders by means of sleeves 55, 56, 5'7 and 58. The direction of rotation of the impression cylinder 22 and the form cylinders 28, 30, 32 and 34 is indicated by the arrows thereon in Fig. 2, each of such arrows being in the reversed direction from that of the arrow indicating the direction of rotation of the corresponding cylinder at the opposite side of the press.
In the arrangement shown, the gear 45 is supported by a short shaft 45a, the arrangement being such that the gear is .slidable along the shaft out of mesh with the gears 44 and 46. Power may then be applied to the gear 49 for driving it in the same direction as that in which the shaft '20 rotates, so as to provide for rotation of the cylinders 21 and 22 in the same direction whensuch operation may be desired.
An additional set of heavy shafts is provided in spaced relation to each other about the shaft 20 and at a greater distance therefrom than the shafts 23, 24, 25 and 26, such additional shafts being indicated by the numerals 59, 60, 61 and 62. Upon each of said additional shafts I have provided ink drums 63 and 64 in end to end relation, as is best shown in Fig. 3 in connection with the shaft 60. About each of the shafts 59, 60, 61 and 62, I have provided a plurality of shafts 65 and 66 in spaced relation to each other about the ink drums 63 and 64, such shafts 65 and 66 having ink rollers mounted thereon for applying ink to the ink drum and from said drum to the form cylinder in accordance with ordinary practice. As is best shown in Fig. 3, the ink rollers mounted upon the shafts 65 are located at one side of the press, being indicated by the numerals 67, while the ink rollers mounted upon the shafts 66 are at the opposite side of the press, being indicated by the numerals 68. One of the rollers 6'7 is mounted in an ink fountain 69, and one of the rollers 68 is mounted in an ink fountain '70. In the arrangement shown the shafts 65 and 66 arranged closest adjacent to the form cylinder are provided with rollers 6'7 and 68 at both sides of the press. The arrangement is such that ink is taken from the fountains at both sides of the press and distributed evenly upon the form cylinders for an outside face printing upon the web portion at one side of the press and an inside face printing upon the web portion at the opposite side of the press.
By the use of my improved arrangement, in which any one of the webs perfected by the several press units may be led about the impression cylinders 21 and 22, the desired color printing may be effected upon selected portions of either one or two webs as may be desired. In the arrangement shown in Fig. l, the web 16 from the press unit 10 is carried about a roller '71 which is provided with a rotary slitter '72 by which the Web 16 is divided into two portions '73 and 74, one portion of which goes toward the right in Fig. 1 to one face of the impression cylinders and the other of which trends'toward the left to the opposite face of the impression cylinders. The web portion '73 is then brought down about rollers '75 and '76 so as to pass toward the right along with webs 1'7 and 18, while the complementary web portion '74 is brought down from the impression cylinder about rollers '77 and '78 and thence upwardly about rollers '79 and into position again alongside the web portion '73.
When it is desired to provide color on the web 17 in lieu of the color printing on web 16 as above explained, the web 18 is run as shown in 1, the web 1'3 is routed about the roller '71 for delivery to the auxiliary printing cylinders, and the web 16 is then run upwardly and toward the right by the use of rollers 81. If it were desired to run the web 18 through the auxiliary printing mechanism, both of the webs 16 and 1'7 would be directed around the auxiliary printing mechanism by use of the rollers 81.
While I prefer to employ the form of construction as shown in my drawings and as'above described, it will be understood that my invention is not to be limited thereto except so far as the claims may be so limited by the prior art, since it is evident that changes might well be made in the arrangement of the parts without departing from my invention.
I claim:
1. auxiliary impression cylinders located at opposite sides of the press in alignment with each other, a plurality of co-operating form'cylinders at each side of the press in spaced relation to each other about said impression cylinders with the form cylinders at one side of the pressin alignment respectively with the form'cylinders at the opposite side of the press, means for driving said auxiliary cylinders at each side of the press in co-operative relation, with the cylinders at one side of the press rotating in-the opposite direction from that of those at the opposite side of the press, a roller revolubly mounted alongside of said impression cylinders for delivery of a web portion to one face of one of said impression cylinders for passage thereabout in one direction and for delivery of a web portion to the other face of the other of said cylinders for passage thereabout in the opposite direction, and a rotary slitter cooperating with said roller for dividing a web passing about said roller along an intermediate line longitudinally of the web for providing said two web portions.
5. 9.-In a printing press, the combination of a plurality of press units each comprising two printing couples for printing both faces of a web, a heavy shaft in spaced relation to said several units and in parallel relation to the cylinders 1 printing couples for printing both faces of a Web, a heavy shaft in spaced relation to said several units and in parallel relation to, the cylinders of said units, two auxiliary impression cylinders in end to end relation on said shaft, a set of other shafts in spaced relation to each other about said'first named shaft, two form cylinders in end to end relationon each of said other shafts, means for driving said shafts and the cylinders thereon at one side of the press in one'direction, and other means accombination of a plurality of press units each comprising two tuated by said shafts for driving the cylindersat the opposite side of the press in the reverse direction.

In a printing press, the combination of a plurality of press units each comprising two printing couples for printing both faces of a web, a heavy shaft in spaced relation to said several units and in parallel relation to the cylinders of said units, two auxiliary impression cylinders in end to end relation on said shaf, a set of other shafts in spaced relation to each other about said first named shaft, two form cylinders in end to end relation on each of said other shafts, means for keying the cylinders at one side of the press on said shafts so as to rotate therewith, means for driving said shafts in co-operative relation to each other, and means actuated by said shafts for driving the cylinders at the opposite side of the press in the reverse direction.
12. In a printing press, the combination of a plurality of press units each comprising two prin ing couples for printing both faces of a web, a heavy shaft in spaced relation to said several units and in parallel relation to the cylinders of'said units, two auxiliary impression cylinders in end to end relation on said shaft, a set of other shafts in spaced relation toeach other about said first named shaft, two form cylinders in end to end relation on each of said other shafts, means for keying the cylinders at one side of the press on said shafts so as to rotate therewith, gears connecting said shafts for causing them to rotate in co-operative relation to each other, gears connected with the several cylinders respectively at the opposite side of the press for causing them to rotate in co-operative relation to each other, and means connecting said last named gears with one of said shafts for causing the cylinders at one side of the press to rotate in the opposite direction from that in which the corresponding cylinders rotate at the opposite side of the press.
13. In a printing press, the combination of a' plurality of press units each comprising two printing couples for printing both faces of a web, a heavy shaft in spaced relation to said several units and in parallel relation to the cylinders of said units, two auxiliary impression cylinders in end to end relation on said shaft,.a set of other shafts in spaced relation to each other about said first named shaft, two form cylinders in end to end relation on each of said other shafts, means for keying the cylinders at one side of the press on said shafts so as to rotate therewith, gears connecting said shafts so as to rotate therewith, gears connecting said shafts for causing them to rotate in co-operative relation to each other, gears connected with the several cylinders respectively at the opposite side of the press for causing them to rotate in co-operative relation to each other, and means connecting said last named gears with one of said shafts for causing the cylinders at one side of the press to rotate at the same speed as that at which the corresponding cylinders rotate at the opposite side of the prcssbut in the opposite direction.
14.121 a printing press, the combination of a plurality of press units each comprising two printing couples for printing both faces of a web, an auxiliary impression cylinder and a plurality of co-operating form cylinders in spaced relation to each other about said impression cylinder at one side of the press for making an outside face color printing on a portion of any selected one of the webs from said press units, a second auxiliary'impression cylinder and a plurality'of cooperating form cylinders in spaced. relation to each other about said impression cylinder at the opposite side of the press in axial alignment respectively with the first named auxiliary cylin ders and in position to make an inside face color rinting on a complementary web portion from said press units, means for driving said auxiliary cylinders serving to rotate thecylinders at one side of the press in the reverse direction from that at the opposite side of the press, and inking mechanisms at opposite sides of the press driven in opposite directions corresponding to'the direction of rotation of the cylinders.
15. In a printing press, the combination of a plurality of press units each comprising two printing couples for printing both faces of a web, an auxiliary impression cylinder and a plurality of co-operating form cylinders in' spaced relation to each other about said .impression cylinder at one side of the press for making an outside face color printing on a portion of any selected one of the webs from said press units, a second auxiliary impression cylinder and a plurality of co-operating form cylinders in spaced relation to each other about said impression cylinder at the opposite side of the press in axial alignment respectively with the first named auxiliary cylinders and in position to make an inside face color printing on a complementary web portion from said press units, means for driving said auxiliary cylinders serving to rotate the cylinders at one side of the press in the reverse direction from that at the opposite side' of the press, axially aligned ink drums at opposite sides of the press driven in opposite directions corresponding to the direction of rotation of the cylinders, means at each side of the press for applying and distributing ink on said drums, and means for transferring the ink from each of the said drums to the adjacent form cylinder.
16. in a printing press, the combination of a plurality of press units each comprising two printing couples for printing both faces of a web, a heavy shaft in spaced relation to said several units and in parallel relation to the cylinders of said units, two auxiliary impression cylinders in end to end relation on said shaft, a set of other shafts in spaced relation to each other about said first named shaft, two form cylinders in end to end relation on each of said other shafts, means for driving the cylinders inopposite directions at opposite sides of the press, a second set of other shafts spaced about said first named shaft at greater distances therefrom than said first named set, two inl; drums in end to end relation on each of said last named shafts and driven in opposite directions corresponding to the direction of rotation of the adjacent cylinders, means at each side of the press for applying and distributing ink on said drums, and means for transferring the ink from each of said drums to the adjacent form cylinder. g

In a printing press, the combination of a plurality of press units each comprising two printing couples for printing both faces of a web, a heavy shaft in spaced relation to said several units'and in parallel relation to the cylinders of said units, two auxiliary impression cylinders in end to end relation on said shaft, a set of other shafts in spaced relation to each other about said first named shaft, two form cylinders in end to end relation on each of said other shafts, means for driving the cylinders in opposite directions at opposite sides of the press, a
