6 Claims.
This invention relates to the application of one or more color printing units to one or more black and white printing unit so that color can be provided in the daily run of newspapers with the least possible expense and difficulty in production than has heretofore been necessary.
The principal objects of the invention are to provide an inexpensive equipment for placing pages carrying color in desired position wherever necessary with reference to the other pages of a newspaper; to provide a compact arrangement of printing cylinders for applying as many as four eXtra colors to a single web and still retain the desired exibility of using part of the unit for printing on one web while another part prints on a second web; to provide a means for leading the web not only above and below the color units but in between the two impression cylinders thereof, to provide an arrangement which permits the placing of color on any of a plurality of webs and furnishes an easy arrangement for leading the sheets into the folder; to provide a convenient drive whereby the shifting of a single gear on each impression cylinder of the color press will reverse the printing couple so that the couples may be driven both in one direction, or in the other direction, or in opposing directions, as desired, to provide compact gearing so that in printing four colors there is a minimum diiiiculty experienced in maintaining register between the four printing cylinders; to provide in addition a certain number of black and white decks and their reels with an extra reel from which the web is led through one of the decks and other webs through other decks, two webs being led through one deck on which web each is printed on one side and then through two color decks on which each may beprinted in either one or two colors, on the opposite side in the space required for an extra black and white deck.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will appear hereinafter.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, in which Fig. 1 is a diagrammatic side view of an arrangement of four black and white decks with a folder and a color unit, capable of printing in one or more colors, arranged in accordancewith this with this invention;
Fig. 2 is a view illustrating the same machinery with four additional colors adapted to be applied to the outside pages of a newspaper;
Fig. 3 is a similar view showing an arrangement (Cl. 27o-"5) of leads whereby 'two additional ycolors can be placed on one 'side of each of two webs;
Fig. 4 is a similar view showing :the webleads with two additional colors applied to each side of one web, the other webs being led directly vto the folder;
Fig. 5 is a view of a similar character showing this invention employed in a machine in which there are four black and white decks with four reels therefor and an additional reel beyond the end of them, the web from which leads 'through one of said decks `and 'directly to the folder while two webs are led through two other decks directly to the folder and the 'webs from two of the reels are led through another deck and to the color unit where they are printed upon on'the other side in either one or 'two colors;

A `well known type'of black and white printing decks A, B, C and D are shown arranged in horizontal alignment in Fig. 1. Each unit, of course', has a plate cylinder I and impression cylinder 2 and they are shown as perfecting presses, though this is not strictly essential. A corresponding number of reels A', Bf, C and D represents the usual means for supplying webs to the said black and white decks. A color unit F is shown `above these decks. It includes two separated impression cylinders 3 and 4 and in this instance four .plate cylinders 5, 6, -1 and 8 and suitable ink motions 9, I D, Il and I 2. The ink motions, as indicated, are mounted in retractible or movable carriages, not shown. Preferably two ink motions are mounted on each carriage. The two ink motions 9 and I0 one one carriage are indicated in Fig. 1 as being in operative position while the ink motions ll and I2 on another carriage Iare shown as backed away to permit plates to be 'placed on, or removed from, the plate cylinders 'I and 8.-
While the' impression 'cylinders 3 and 4 are relatively close together there 'is sciet cleard ance provided between them through which webs, as for example W2 and W3 may be led. It is obvous that no printing is done on these two webs when they are led between the impression cylinders, as shown. The purpose is merely to 'permit the placementY in the desired location of other Webs which are being printed. After being printed on in black, preferably, by the units A, B, C and D, these four webs are led over a customary series of guide rolls, into or between the color units and around additional guide rollers, over a drag roll I3 and into a folder E, which is indicated diagrammatically. It will be obvious that the webs W and W4, after being printed on both sides in black in decks A and D, are led through the two color presses and each one is printed in one nr two colors on one side.
A horizontal drive shaft is represented diagrammatically by a central line I4. The usual type of bevel gears I and I6, vertical shaft I 'lv and bevel gears I8 and I 9 areused as being shown to transmit power to an intermediate shaft which can be employed to drive the deck B. The decks A and D may be driven in a similar manner.
On the shaft I4 is asimilar bevel gear 20 meshing with a bevel gear 2l on a vertical shaft 22. Bevel gears 23 and 24 serve as a similar driving arrangement for the deck C. This vertical shaft 2D is adaptedV to be extended to drive the color unit F. Bevel gears 23a and 26a (See Fig. 6) are secured to the shaft 22 and mesh with bevel gears 25 and 26 respectively, the latter two gears being carried on shafts 21 and 23. Intermediate gears 29 and 3l) are secured to the shafts 2 and 28 respectively and mesh with gears 3l and 32 as desired. These last two gears'are slidably splined to the impression cylinders II and 3 respectively so that they can be moved axially and drive these two cylinders. In the case of the intermediate gear 30, on the shaft 28, it can mesh with the gear 32 on the cylinder 3 in the position shown in Fig. 7 but can also mesh with the gear 3l. Thus, it will be seen that a reversible drive may be provided for the impression cylinders 3 and 4. This driving arrangement provides a very iiexible device which may be used to drive the impression cylinders 3 and 4 in the various combinations shown in Figs. '7 to 10.
In Fig. 5 the invention is shown in a form in which four black and white decks G, H, I, J, corresponding to the decks A, B, C and D in Fig. l, are shown with four reels G', H', 1"'and J To this is added an extra reel VR.
The web W5 from the reel R is led through the deck G and the web W6 is led through the deck H. The web W'7 is led through one printing couple 35-36 of the deck I andthen to one portion of the color unit F around the impression cylinder 4 where'it is printed on the other side of the web by two plate cylinders 'I and 8 or any number of them to print in one or two Ycolors thereon. Thisgives one .color on one side of the web Wrl and one or two colors on the other side.
In a similar manner the web W8 is led throughv the otherV couple 33--34 of the deck I and then around the impression cylinder 3 of the color unit F when it may receive two colors from the plate cylinders 5 and 6 on the opposite side of the web. The web W9 is led through 'the deck J.
It will be obvious that, with the four black and White decks and one color deck as constructed with the two parts of the color deck separated from each other, webs may be printed on both sides with the possibility of two of the webs carrying an extra color on one side. .This is the equivalent to providing an extra black and white deck and shows a new and useful arrangement for the combination of black and white and color decks.
If it is desired to place four additional colors besides the black on the outside page of a newspaper the arrangement as shown in Fig. 2 may be used. The driving connection in this case can be the same as that shown in Fig. 10.
In Fig. 3 an arrangement is shown where two additional colors are added to one side of each of `the two central webs W3 and W4 as folded in the folder E. The driving arrangement of the impression cylinders 3 and 4 corresponds to that shown yin Fig. '7 which does not require further explanation.
In Fig. 4 is shown an arrangement whereby two additional colors are added to each side of the outside sheet (Fig. 1) folded in the product at the folder E. In this particular case the driving arrangement is similar to that shown in Fig. 8 which also can be understood from the description already made of Fig. '1.
Only a few of the many arrangements possible are shown but a new and useful arrangement is employed whereby additional colors may be applied to the webs substantially at will and a simple, inexpensive and compact arrangement is shown for interweaving these color carrying webs as desired.
Having thus described my invention and the advantages thereof, I do not wish to be limited to the details herein disclosed, otherwise than as set forth in the claims, but what I claim is:
l. The combination with a plurality of printing units, of a pair of color printing units spaced apart but adjacent and located over one of. the first named printing units, means for leading the printed web from one of the first named printing units directly between the two color printing units and out of printing contact with them, and means for leading a web from one of the other printing units through one of the color printing units to print oneor more colors on one side of that web.
2. The combination with a plurality of units in horizontal alignment, of two color printing units located above and adjacent to them and spaced apart, means for leading a web from one of the first named printing units, after it is printed upon, directly through the space between the two units out of printing contact therewith, and, means for leading two webs from opposite sides, that have been printed upon by other printing units, through the two iirst named units and printing upon them.
3. The combination with a four color printing unit having two inside adjacent impression cylinders spaced apart, means for leading a web up between the impression cylinders thereofI and entirely out of printing contact with both of them, and means for leading another web through one of the color printing units.
4. The combination with a plurality of black Vand white printing units, of two color printing units arranged adjacent to each other above one of the black and white printing units, means for printing on two webs by the color units, means for leading a web from one of said black and white printing units between the two color printing units and entirely out of printing contact with both of them, means fory leading another web through one ofthe color printing units, and means for guiding all four webs adjacent to each other toward a folder.
5. The combinatin with a plurality of black and white printing units, of a pair of. color printing units spaced apart but having their impression cylinders located adjacent to each other between their respective printing cylinders, means for leading the printed web from one of said black and white printing units between the two color printing units and entirely out of printing contact with them, means for leading a web from one of the other black and white printing units through one of the color printing units to print one or more colors on one side of the last named web, and means for leading said webs together to a folder.
6. 'Ihe combination with a plurality of black and white printing units, of two color printing units located adjacent to them and spaced apart with their impression cylinders adjacent, means for leading two webs through two of the black and white printing units and then through the two color unitsvin printing contact therewith, means for leading two webs from the other of said black and white units between said impression cylinders out of contact therewith, and ink 10 motions for the color units on opposite sides of the two color units.
