Description

M. WEILL. Neck-Scarf.
No. 212,290. Patented Feb. 11,1879.
N. PETERS, PHOTO-LlTHOGflA FHER, WASHINGTON, u, c.
UNITED STATES PATENT FFICE.
MAURICE WEILL, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
IMPROVEMENT IN NECK-SCARFS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 212,290, dated February 11 1879 application filed December 23, 1878.
To all whom it may concern:
:Be it known that I, MAURICE XVEILL, of New York city, county, and State, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Neck-Scarfs; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 represents a plan view of the scarf, showing the two parts opened and unfolded. Fig. 2 represents a plan of the scarf with the parts closed and partially folded.
Similar letters of reference in the several figures denote the same parts.
The object of this invention is to provide for the public a neck-scarf capable of being reversed, or, in other words, of being adjusted to show a scarf of one color or design, and of having the adjustment changed at will, so as to show a scarf of another color or design, thus enabling a single article to perform the duty of two separate and independent scarfs, as heretofore constructed.
To this end the invention consists in combining two independent facings by means of a hinged flexible joint or other suitable fastening or connection, whereby the two facings may be so adjusted together that either may fold over and conceal the other, or vice versa, as I will now proceed to describe.
In the drawings, A indicates one of said parts or facings, and B the other, the two being connected by a flexible strap, 0, whereby the part A may be turned over in front of B, so that only A will be exposed to view when the scarf is worn, or, on the other hand, B may be turned over A, so that only B will be exposed to view.
Each part A B is made in substantially the form of a complete neck-scarf of a form already known in the market, and which will be recognized from the drawings.
The top of the part A is represented at A,
and has two flaps, a a, which foldtogether at the back and fasten by clasps or connecting-pieces a. The part B has a similar top, B, with flaps b b and clasp I). r
The front side of part A may be covered with black silk or any other suitable material, and the rear side, being never exposed, may
be covered with any cheaper material. The same is true of part B.
In ordinary practice, the parts A and B will be faced with material of different colors or designs; but they may be of the same material, color, and design, if preferred.
The tops A B should be stiffened with.
end to the top A or B, is passed around the neck, and has its stiffened end d inserted down through the folded and clasped top of the scarf, and held by a pin or point, 6. Each of the tops A B is provided with one of these pins or points to facilitate the'fastening of the strap.
When the parts A B are covered with material of a different appearance the strap D should be faced with material corresponding to that of A and on the other side with material corresponding to that of B-; and it must be secured to the top of the scarf by a hook and eye, m, or other suitable fastening which will permit its sides to be reversed, so that its exposed color or design shall correspond to that of the part, A or B, which is for the time being exposed to view.
It will be observed that when this scarf is folded one pair of clasps will come inside of the other. Only the outer ones need be fastened.
lVhere a dark or plain material is used for facing one of the parts A or B and a light or figured material is used for facing the other, the part containing the dark or plain facing should be slightly wider than the other part, so as to effectually conceal it when the dark or plain part is exposed.
In the use of this improved article the change of adjustment is made in the most convenient and simple manner by merely turning the parts so that the one to be exposed will cover and embrace the other, then folding the tops together, fastening the outside clasps, and the article is ready to be applied and Worn.
\Vhile I have here shown the parts as permanently connected by a flexible hin ge or strap, it is obvious that the permanency of the connection is no part of the invention, as they might be made separate and fastened together when in use by means of a pin stud, or other suitable connection.
I claim as my invention- 1. A neck-scarf composed of the reversible or interchangeable parts A B, provided with flaps, constructed substantially as described.
2. The combination of the parts A B With the reversible strap 1), substantially as described.
3. The combination of the parts A B, connected by a permanent hinge or strap, 0, or equivalent, substantially as described.
MAURICE VEILL.
