FRANK CUOINOTTA, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
SAFETY ATTACHMENT FOR POCKETBOOKS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 7, 1221.
Application filed August 27, 1920. Serial No. 406,396.
T 0 all whom it may concern .1
Be it known that I, FRANK CUoINo'r'rA, a subject of the King of Italy, residing at New York, in the county and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Safety Attachments for Pocketbooks, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact specification.
This invention relates to pocketbooks or purses, and has for its object to provide improved means for fastening the same in closed position and attaching them to the clothing of the owners so that it will be impossible for said pocketbooks or purses to be stolen or the contents thereof removed without the knowledge of the owners.
The invention will be first hereinafter described in connection with the accompanying drawings, which constitute part of this specification, and then more specifically defined in the claims at the end of the description.
In the accompanying drawings, wherein similar reference characters, are used to designate corresponding parts throughout the several views Figure 1 is a side View of the upper portion of a pair of trousers showing a pocketbook or purse in the pocket thereof and fastened to one of the waist-band buttons by means of the flexible member which constitutes part of this invention.
Fig, 2 is a sectional view of a pocketbook or purse of a preferred construction, showing the fastening means applied thereto and the chain connected to the button on the clothing, and
Fig. 3 is a detailed perspective View of the pocketbook or purse alone, the flap at one end being shown closed and that at the other end open.
Referring first to Fig. 3, the pocketbook or purse 1 may be made of leatheror other suitable material, and is preferably made in tubular form with its body portion divided into opposite end sections 2 and 3 by a transverse line of stitching & or other suitable means. The two sections or compartments 2 and 3 of the pocketbook or purse have flaps 5 adapted to fold over their respective mouths, and each flap has a perforation 6 formed therein and adapted to register with perforations 7 through the mouths of said compartments when said flaps are folded over to close said mouths.
When the flaps are in closed position and the pocketbook or purse is folded along the line of stitching at, as shown in Fig. 2, the flaps are presented face to face where they cannotbe tampered with when the fastening means is applied. Said fastening means consists of a button 8, or its equivalent, having a shank 9 to extend through the perforations 6 and 7 in the flaps and mouths of the compartments of the pocketbook or purse. The free end of saidshank has a loop 10 formed therein through which a chain 11, or other suitable flexible member may be passed as shown in Fig. 2. When the chain is passed through said loop 10, it isevident that the fastening device or button cannot be withdrawn from the purse, and that the latter cannot, therefore, be opened and have its contents removed until the chain is first withdrawn from the loop.
One end of the chain 11 is permanently at tached by means of a ring 12 to a clasp 13 adapted to be detachably fastened over a button 15 on the trousers 16 or otherwise attached to the clothing of the owner of the purse. The other end of the chain has an open link 14 adapted to be detachably fastened to the ring 12, as shown in Fig. 2, so that said chain cannot be disengaged from the button shank which secures the purse in closed position without the knowledge of the owner.
While a special form of pocketbook or purse, having the two compartments and facing flaps, is shown herein as the preferred form to be used with the safety attachment, it will be understood that said safety attachment, including the button, shank, loop, chain and means for attaching said chain to the clothing, may be used with any other form of pocketbook or purse having perforations for the button.
Having thus described my invention, what passage of the shank of the I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is 1. The combination with a pocketbook having a flap to cover its mouth and perforations in said mouth and flap to register with one another when the flap is closed, of a button having a shank to extend through said perforations in the mouth and flap, a loop on the free end of said shank of the button, a chain to be passed loosely throu h said loop for fastening the mouth of tie pocketbook closed, and means for fastening both ends of the chain to the clothing.
2. The combination With a pocketbook having mouths at opposite ends each with perforations therethrough, said pocketbook being capable of being folded to bring its mouths together, of a detachable fastening device having a shank to be passed through the perforations in the two mouths when brought together, a loop on the free end of the shank, a flexible member to be passed through said loop for fastening the mouths of the pocketbook closed, and means for attaching said flexible member to the clothing.
3. The combination with a pocketbook having months at opposite ends and flaps to cover said mouths, the mouths and flaps havneeome ing registering perforations and the flaps facing each other When the pocketbook is folded to bring its mouths together, of a detachable fastening device having a shank to be passed through the perforations in the mouths and flaps When brought together, a loop on the free end of the shank, a flexible member to be passed through said loop for fastening the mouths of the pocketbook closed, and means for attaching said flexible member to the clothing. v
In'testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification.
FRANK onomorra.
