Description

WITNESSES A. B. COLEMAN. Double Haurmsxs.
Patented April 2, 1878 NVENTEHi.
N.FETERS, PHOTO-UTHOGRAPHER'. WASHINGTON, D C.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
AMBROSE B. COLEMAN, OF LYNDONVILLE, NEW YORK.
IMPRO VEMENT IN DOUBLE HARNE SS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 201,869, dated April 2, 1878; application filed August 7, 1877.
Toall whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, AMBROSE BOOTH COLE- MAN, of Lyndonville, in the county of Orleans and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Harness; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use it, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, which forms part of this specification.
The object of my invention is to form a simple, cheap, and light attachment for a span of horses to plow, drag, or draw any load with, having only one portion of which, called the draw-lever A, under the horses, which pulls one-half of the load, and the other portion, composed of the pulley E and the pulley drawtrace 0, between the horses While working, and not under them, to pull the other half of the load, and the two portions, being connected by the pulleytrace B, pull the whole of any load.
The traces may be made of ropes, straps, or chains.
The figure is a perspectiveview of a device embodying my invention.
This invention consists of two parts, the draw-lever A with the traces f f composing the first part. This part works under the horses bellies, one end under one horse and the other end under the other horse, just behind the fore-legs. To each end of the drawlever A is attached a trace, f, sufficiently long to reach either to the hames of any harness or to the tug-buckle in the quarter-tug, one trace f on the outside of one horse and the other trace f on the outside of the other horse. This part draws but half of the load, and can be made light, as desired.
The second part contains the pulley drawtrace 0 and the pulley E. This works between the two horses and not under them, and draws the other half of the load, as follows: One end of the pulley draw-trace G is attached to the inner side of one horse and the other end to the inner side of the other horse, either at the hames or the tug-buckle of the quartertug, and works around the pulley E and extends back between the horses over and above the draw-lever A. The first parti. 6., the drawlever A-is connected to the second part-i. 0.,
the pulley draw-trace O and the pulley Eas follows: One end of the pulley-trace B is fastened to the center of the draw-lever A, and passes around the pulley D. The other end is fastened to the pulley E. A chain or trace is fastened to the pulley D, and extends back for attachment to the load. The pulleyD and the pulley draw-trace B pull the whole of the load, while the above-described first part and second part each pull only one-half of the load.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination, with the curved drawlever A and its traces f f and the pulley E and its draw-trace O, of the pulley D and its draw-trace B, all constructed and arranged as shown and described, and for the purpose stated.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand and seal this 7th day of August, 1877.
