SHAFT ATTACHMENT FOR CARRIAGES.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 413,051, dated October 15, 1889.

Application filed August 14, 1889. Serial No. 320,662. (No model) To aZZ whom it may conceiva- Be it known that I, CHARLES C. GRAHAM, a citizen of the United States, residing at Orawfordsville, in the county of Montgomery and State of Indiana, have invented a new and useful Shaft Attachment, of which the following is a specification.

The invention relates to improvements in shaft and tongue attachments.

The object of the present invention is to provide a device designed to prevent the reins catching on the ends of the shafts or tongue of a vehicle.

The invention consists in the construction and novel combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the claim hereto appended.

In the drawings, Figure 1 is a'perspective view showing the device attached to the ends of a pair of shafts. Fig. 2 is a detail view of an end of the device. Fig. 3 is a central longitudinal sectional view of the same. Fig. 4c is a detail view ofan end of the strap.

Referring to the accompanying drawings, A designates a strap which is swiveled to the ends of a pair of shafts B, and consistsof two sections o, and co, and has an end of the section a, provided with a buckle O and the adjacent end of the other section ct perfo- The two sections are designed to be buckled together and to the breast-strap, whereby the ends of the shafts B are closed andthe reins are prevented being caught.

The strap A is preferably circular in crosssection to within a short distance of the ends that are buckled together, and it is preferably strengthened by a wire I), which maintains its shape and position. The ends a of the strap are provided with tips E, which consist of sleeve portions 6 and annular flanges e, that are formed at the ends of the sleeves e and serve to swivel the ends 0L2 of the strap A to metal caps F. The metal caps F are approximately the form of a truncated cone, and having openings f in their smaller ends to receive the strap, and are secured on the ends of the shafts B by screws or the like. By this construction the device may readily be secured to the shafts of a vehicle and buckled to suit the size of the latter, and the strap may beshortened by moving the sleeves farther thereon, and the ends of the strap may then be cut off.

From the foregoing description and the accompanying drawings the construction, operation, and advantages of the invention will readily be understood.

\Vhat I claim is- A shaft attachment comprising the caps having the openings f in their ends, the strap consisting of sections and adapted to be buckled together, and the tips secured to the ends a of the strap and provided with annular flanges, whereby the ends a of the strap are swiveled to said caps, substantially as described.
