"Wdlzsse )hue/Zier' UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
LUTHER B. STOWlLL, OF FRIENDSHIP, WISCONSIN.
HALTER.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 251,074, dated December 20, 1881.
Application lcd October 9, 1880.
To all 'whom it may concern Be it known that I, LUTHER B. StroWELL, of Friendship village, in the county of Adams and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useiul Improvements in Halters; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description ot' the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters ot' reference marked thereon, which forma part of this specitcation.
My invention relates to. headstalls and halters for domestic animals; and the novelty consistsinthe peculiar construction, arrangement, and adaptation ot' parts, whereby cheapness of manufacture, ease of application, eflicicncy of service, and less liability to get ont of order are obtained, as will be more fully hereinafter set forth.
It is well known that many accidents occur in consequence ot1 a multiplicity of buckles,
3, and 4t are details, showing more fully the construction of the buckles; and Fig. 5, a perspective elevation, showing the device complete.
Referring to the drawings, A represents the cheek and crown straps, both in one piece ot' leather, and being seeui ed in one of the buckles a, passesupward andthrough one ofthe buckles c, over, down upon the opposite side, through (No model.)
the other cheek-buckle c, and terminates, after passing through and beingsecured, in the other buckle a. Within a loop in the check-buckles cis secured, by one or more snap-hooks, w, a throat-latch, O, formed of one piece of leather, secured at each end to the cheek-buckles c, the center ot the body passing through a loop, D, formed of one piece ot' leather, both ends of which are secured in thc buckle b, as plainly shown in Fig. 5.
B represents the hitching-strap, one end of which is passed through a tiy-bnckle, b', thence through the throat-buckle b, buckles a u, back through buckles b and b', and there secured, as shown. A portion of this strap is loosened, after passing through the buckle b, to form the nose-strap B', thus forming the nosestrap and hitchi-ng-strap of a single piece'of leather, and with the necessity of but two holes for buckletongues .in said strap. In this peculiar construction lies the gist of my invention.
It will thus be observed that in my complete halter I employ but four pieces of leather and a minimum number of buckles, and the device is consequently safer, better, and more convenient.
What I claim as new is- The halter herein described, consisting of the bitching-strap and nose-band formed of a single piece doubled upon itself, the head-strap, throat-strap, and loop, comprising a halter and bitching-strap formed of t'our pieces, the whole constructed and adapted to serve relatively to the buckles t b c, snaps x, and fly buckle b', as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimonythatI claim the forcgoingl have hereunto set my hand and seal this 16th day of August, 1880.
LUTHER B. STOWELL.
