1 Claim.
This invention relates to valve guides and it has particular reference to a replaceable guide for use in conjunction with poppet valves of internal combustion engines, particularly of the 5 heavy duty type.
V The principal object of the invention is to provide in a valve guide of the character specified, a device which is readily replaceable and in which a thorough lubrication of all moving parts is possible.
Another object of the invention is the provision of means whereby the valve is held in alignment at all. times.
Another object of the invention is the provision of means whereby spring surging is eliminated.
Still another object of the invention isto provide a guide which is simple, inexpensive, and thoroughly dependable in use.
7 With the foregoing objects as paramount the 20 invention has particular reference to its salient features of construction and arrangement of parts, which will become manifest as the description proceeds, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, wherein.
The figure illustrates the invention in vertical section, showing the same attached to a cylinder head.
Continuing more in detail with the drawing, 1 designates the cylinder head of an internal com- 30 bustion engine, on which a rocker arm 2 is actuated by a conventional cam mechanism, not shown. A valve chamber housing 3 is rigidly attached to the cylinder head 1 as shown. The housing 3 is provided with removable plates 4 to aid in gaining access to the valve 5.
The valve guide proper is comprised of an upper guide 6 and a lower guide 7. The guide 6 is provided with threads at a, and is formedwith a hexagon outer portion to provide for the application of a wrench. The guide 6 is provided Manifestly, the construction shown is capable of considerable modification and such modification as is considered within the scope and mean- 7 ing of the appended claim is also considered within the spirit and intent of the invention.
What is claimed is:
The combination with a valve chamber and a valve for reciprocation therein, having a stem. projecting beyond the said valve chamber, of a. valve guide detachably fitted to the valve chamber and comprising a portion therein snugly receiving the valve stem, and a cylindrical skirt portion exterior thereto having an opening .inits side, a guide carried by the valve and adjustable on the projecting-portion of the stem and telescoping the cylindrical skirt portion of the first mentioned guide and cooperating therewith to provide a housing and an oil container, said cylindrical skirt portion projecting into the adjustable guide portion for the major portion of its length, thereby facilitating the lubrication of the guide portion on the cylindrical skirt portion by contacting with the oil in said container upon reciprocation of the valve, and a helical spring on the valve stem within the said housing and protected thereby and lubricated by the oil therein. l
