' DETACHABLE VALVE MOUNTING.
Original application filed January 14, 192), Serial No. 851,349.
Divided and this application filed. January 14, 1920. Serial No. 351,351.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, THOMAS M. FINLEY and ALLEN W. BROWN, citizens of the United States, residing at St. Louis, in the State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Detachable Valve Mountings, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to a detachable valve mounting and is a division of an application Serial No. 351,849, filed by us the 14th day of January, 1920. g
The object of the present invention is to improve the construction of inlet and exhaust valves, more especially the manner of mounting the same, and to provide a simple, practical and eiiicient valve structure of strong and durable construction designed particularly for use on the tandem motor power unit of the aforesaid application but adapted to be employed on various types of internal combustion engines and capable of enabling a valve to be easily and quickly removed from an engine cylinder for repair or similar cause or to enable another valve structure to be substituted for it so that the change from onevalve to another may be instantly made.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the construction and novel combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and pointed out in the claim hereto appended, it being understood that various changes in the form, proportion, and minor details of construction within the scope of the claim may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.
In the drawings, in which like characters of reference designate corresponding parts in the several figures:
Figure 1 is a sectional view of a portion of a cylinder provided with a detachable valve mounting constructed in accordance with this invention.
Figure 2 is a similar View the valve being in section. 7
Figures 3 and 4 are detail views of the valve proper.
Figure 5 is an elevation of the removable sleeve.
' Figure 6 is a vertical sectional View of the same.
Figure 7 is a horizontal sectional view of the same.
Figure 8 is a side view of the removable cap or bonnet.
Figure 9 is vertical sectional view of the same. I
The tandem motor power unit of the aforesaid application is equipped with the detachable valve mounting of the present invention and each valve consists of a head 1 and a stem 2, the valve head being beveled at 3 to fit a valve seat 4 of a valve casing or sleeve 5 of cylindrical form and arranged vertically in an opening 6' in the upper end of the cylinder 7 and provided. at the lower end with an exterior circumferential recess 8 to enable it to seat on a shoulder- 9 in flush relation with the inner face of the upper end 10 of the cylinder 7. The shoulder 9 is formed by an annular flange or rib at the lower end of the openings 6 and the lower face of the rib or flange is flush with the inner face of the end of the cylinder. This provides a seat for the removable valve casing which is in the form of a detachable sleeve, and the lower end of the valve casing or sleeve is reduced so as to extend through the flange or rib to its position in flush relation with the inner face of the upper end of the cylinder. The lower end of the valve casing or sleeve 5 is open and the said valve seat surrounds the open lower end of the valve casing. Each valve casing is provided with a side opening 11 for the inlet of the fuelcharge or the exhaust of the burnt gases and the said valve casing or sleeve 5, which is pro vided with a top wall 12 has a central opening 13 therein for the valve stem, and it is provided at the top central opening with an integral tubular guiding member or sleeve 14 through which the valve stem 2 passes.
Each valve stem has mounted on its upper portion a flanged or bushed washer 15 detachably secured on the stem by a key 16 and receiving the upper end of a coiled spring 17 interposed between the said washer and the top of the valve casing or sleeve 5 and adapted to maintain the valve normally in closed position with its head in contact with the valve seat 4. The washer 15 is dished at its upper and lower faces, the key 16 being arranged within the flange 18 formed by the upper dish of the washer,
and the spring 17 has its upper end arranged in the recess within the flange 19 formed by the lower dish of the washer. As the spring maintains a constant pressure on the lower face of the washer there will be no liability of the key becoming accidentally displaced, as the-key is recessed at its upper edge at 20 to enable it to interlock with the stem at the upper endof the key slot 21 and it is necessary to compress the spring 17 and move the washer 15 and the key 16 downwardly to withdraw the key. This may be readily done when required. The upper end 22 of the opening 6 of the cylinders is threaded to receive a threaded flange or portion 23 of a cap or bonnet 24 covering the opening 6 of the cylinder and encasing the upper portion of the valve stem and the spring 17. The washer and the key 16 are also arranged within the cap or bonnet 24,-. The upper portion of the cap or bonnet Ql-is of tubular formation and the said cap or bonnet is enlarged at the base as shown and is provided thereat with a horizontal flange- 25 which extends beyond the opening 6 in the cylinder. The upper portion 26 of the valve stem is preferably reduced slightly in diameter as shown and it. extends through an opening 27 in the upper end of the tubular portion of the cap or bonnet. The cap or bonnet is provided at the tubular portion adjacent the base with a polygonal wrench receiving portion 28 to enable it be readily screwed into and unscrewed from the cylinder.
hat is claimedis:
In a device of the class described, the combination of a cylinder provided at the upper end with an opening and having an annular rib thereat forming a horizontal shoulder at the inner end of the opening, a sleeve arranged within the opening and provided atits inner end with a valve seat and with an exterior annular recess receiving the said rib and seated upon the shoulder thereof, said sleeve having a fiat end wall at its outer end provided centrally thereof with a tubular extension projecting interiorly and exteriorly of the said end wall, a cap having a cylindrical portion threaded into the opening of the cylinder and engaging the sleeve at the flat outer end wall thereof and provided with a horizontally projecting flange extending beyond the opening or the cylinder and seat upon the exterior of the latter, said cap being also provided with a reduced extension of a materially less diameter than the sleeve and projecting exteriorly of the cylinder and having, a substantially cylindrical inner surface, said tubular extension being provided in its outer end with an opening alined with the tubular extension of the end wall of the said sleeve, a valve cooperating with the said seat and having a stem extending through the tubular extension of the cap, a washer mounted on the valve stem and operating in the said extension of the cap and a spring housed within the cap and bearing against the washer and the sleeve for urging the valve outwardly to hold the valve on its seat.
In testimony whereof we affix our signatures.
