of Bradner, in the county of Wood and State of Ohio, have invented a certain new and useful Gas-EnglneStarter; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and
exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the characters of reference marked thereon, which-form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to starting devices for internal combustion engines and particularly to devices of this kind of the priming The object of my invention is to provide a simple and efiicient device for use in connection with an engine cylinder to facilitate the introduction of a priming charge therein and the lighting of such charge or of a charge of gas drawn into the cylinder by suction action of the engine in the usual manner, and its primary object is to improve on the starting device described and claimed in my former United States Letters Patent 1,080,689, dated December 9th, 1913.
The invention is fully described in the following specification, and while, in its broader aspect it is capable of embodiment in numerous forms, a preferred embodiment thereof is illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which,-

Referring to the drawings, 1 is the body of a device embodying the invention, it being of plug form with its inner end threaded as at 2 to adapt it to be screwed into an opening in an engine cylinder 3. The body 1 is provided with a longitudinal bore or passage 4 extending from its inner end to near its outer end and provided preferably at its top side with a laterally projecting opening 5, which is disposed at the outer side of the cylinder in which the body is secured. inner end of the body 1 is provided with a conical valveseat in which a valve 6 is adapted to seat to close the communication between said passage and the interior of the cylinder. 7 The valve 6 opensinwardly relative to the cylinder and has a. stem 7 proj ecting from its inner side through thepassage 4 and through a bearing passage 8 provided in the outer end portion of the body. The outer end portion of the stem 7 projects beyond vthe outer end of the body 1' and pivotally carries a lock finger 9, which is intended to coact with the outer cam end of theeX- tension 10 on the outer end of the body 1 to nut and cooperate to have binding engage ment therewith. The outer end section of the stem is designated 13 and is provided with a head 14 at its outer end.
In the use of my device, a charge of gasolene or other suitable priming fluid may be introduced into the cylinder through the passage 15 of the device.
In starting an engine by the use of my device the valve 6 is moved to open position by releasing the locking finger 9 from its engagement with the cam surface of the extension 10 and it is allowed to rest on one or the other of the top shoulders of said extension. A charge of gasolene or other suitable priming fluid is then introduced into the engine through the opening 4-5 of the device, being drawn therein by suction action upon a turning of the engine crank, and a lighted match or other igniting agent is then held to the opening 5 to ignite the charge. If gas is being used as an operating fluid, a charge may be drawn into the engine by turning the crank and such charge then ignited by holding a lighted match to the opening 5. Upon the compression stroke of the piston the valve 6 will be closed but it will be opened again on the suction stroke, providing the lock finger 9* rests on the longer one of the two shoulders on the extension 10. If the finger rests on the shorter Copies of this patent may be obtained for one, of such shoulders it will automatically drop into locking engagement with the cam end of such extension upon a closing of the valve, as is apparent. Should wear occur between the valve and its seat or between the finger and its coacting lockin surface, such wear may be compensated for by an ad]ustment of thefinger on the stem. 7

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is,
