RANGE Filed May 23, 1931 4 Sheets-Sheet 4 I 3nnentor (lttorncg'a Patented Dec. 13, 1932 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE ARTHUR STOCKSTROM, OF ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI, ASSIGNOR AMERICAN STOVE GOM- PANY,'OF ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI, A CORPORATION OF NEW JERSEY RANGE Application filed May 23,
This invention relates to improvements in ranges, and it pertains particularly to an improved type of cover for the cooking top portion of the range.
The improvement specifically shown involves a cover for the cooking burners or top portion consisting of two separate portions that are individually hingedat opposite sides of the said top portion, whereby the outer portion when it is open serves as a working space and the inner ortion when it is raised serves as a splasher ack.
In the construction as here shown, this cooking top cover is made of two parts which have their outer portions independently hinged to the cooking top portion, the inner part of the cover being hinged to or adjacent to the inner projecting wall of the oven portion, and the other art of the cover having its outer side hinge at a point inside of the outer extremity of the said cooking top portion, whereby when the outer portion is opened outward it is held in a horizontal position and is adapted to act as a working shelf or space, and the other part of the top when it is raised extends upward parallel with and adjacent to or against the adjacent outer wall of the oven portion and acts as a splasher back for the inner end of the cooking top portion.
A further improvement is hinging the inner part of said folding top in a detachable manner whereby the said cover can be removed for cleaning purposes.
Other improvements pertain to certain details which will be described hereinafter.
In the accompanying drawings:

ber of the folding top, the same being shown in section and also the frame of the cooking top portion shown in section.
Fig. 5 is a top plan view of a range with the present improvement applied to it and showing the folding top portion in open position.
Fig. 6 is a top plan view of the range showing the folding top or cover in a closed position.
Fig. 7 is a view of a range showing a modification in a mannner of supporting the outer cover member in its open position.
Fig. 8 is a front elevation of Fig. 7, with the folding top portion closed.
Fig. 9 is a front elevation showing a modification in the manner of hinging the inner folding top member, the folding top members shown partially open.
Fig. 10 is a top plan view of the range shown in Fig. 9 and also showing the supporting member extending substantially across the end of the range, whereby it is adapted to receive either drawers for cooking utensils or made into other elongated utensil holders.
Referring now to the drawings in which a baking oven 1 and below it a broiling oven 2 are suitably supported upon a. frame 3. Also supported on'this frame 3, at the inner side of said oven portion is a compartment portion having preferably two doors 4, and above this compartment is located what may be either-termed a burner box or a cooking top portion 5. Located on top of this .burner box is a suitable frame 6, and located in this frame is a rate member 7 This grate member is ma e detachable in the usual manner and in referring to the cooking top'portion is meant that part which comprises the burner box 5. Located above the burner box and at its rear end is a vertically arranged splasher back 8, that is preferably fixed in said vertical position.
Attention is called to the fact that the compartment 4, the burner box 5 and the frame 6 are elongated upwardly so that the said frame 6 is located in a horizontal plane approximately half-way the height of said baking oven 1.
In carrying out the present invention, I provide said cooking top with a folding cover which comprises an inner member 9 that has its inner end hinged adjacent the vertical outer wall 10 of said oven, said hinge extending in a direction transverse the said cooking top and also consists of an outer member 11, which has its outer edge hinged at 12 to the cooking top portion. This hinge member 12 extends also in a direction acrossthe cooking top portion.
When the folding top members 9 and 11 are in open position the inner member 9 has its upper edge in substantially a horizontal plane with the upper edge of the splasher back 8, and the member 11 is of the same width so that when these members 9 and 11 are in closed positions, their inner edges 13 are close together. By positioning the'burner box to bring the grate portion at a point substantially mid-way between the top of the inner wall 10 and its bottom, the above positions of the parts are accomplished.
It will be also observed that the members 9 and 11 are independently hinged and move independently. The foregoing result is accomplished by positioning the burner box 5 to a point that is substantially half the distance of the horizontal length of the cooking to up per edge of the splasher back to the cooking top substantially one-half the horizontal length of the cooking top and accomplishes the horizontal and vertical positions and sizes of the folding members 9 and 11.
For the purpose of supporting the outer member 11 in its horizontal position in order that it will form a working shelf or space,
the outer member is hinged at the point 12 that is located at a point inside of the outer edge 13 of the cooking top, whereby the number 11 is supported as stated.
I show in Fig. 4 the specific manner of constructing the parts so that the above result is accomplished. In this figure the cooking top frame consists of an upper metallic sheet or member 14 having turned down sides. This metallic member 14 is so shaped at its outer end that it forms an L-shaped depending portion 16, which is of a depth corresponding to the thickness of the said folding member 11. This folding member 11 also consists of an upper sheet-iron portion 17 and a lower sheet iron portion 18, the said upper and lower portions telescoping as shown at 19. The above construction may be varied without involving the broad idea. The improvement shown in Fig. 4 and Figs. 1, 2, 5 and 6, is forming in the outer edge of the top portion a depending L-shaped construction to receive and support the member 11 in its horizontal position for the purpose herein stated.
The specific manner of pivotally connecting the folding member 9 with the cooking top portion is shown in Fig. 3. This consists and this makes the distance from the in providing the cooking top 6 at each side with upwardly projecting sockets 20 and in providing the said member 9 at each side thereof the pintles 21, which rest in the sockets 20. These sockets 20, as clearly shown, have open upper ends adapted to detachably receive the said pintles 21. For the purpose of detachably holding these pintles 21 in the sockets 20 and for holding the said folding member 9 in a vertical position the pintles 21 are provided with slight projections 22 and providing a light spring member 23 adapted to engage these pintles and projections. The said member 9 consists of an outer lower sheet-metal wall 24 and an inner or upper wall 25,.and that the lower ends of these walls interlock as shown at 26. These interlocking walls are provided with slots 27 adapted to receive the upwardly projecting sockets 20.
Bymeans of the foregoing construction it will be seen that the member 9 and the pintles can be inwardly removed from the sockets 20 and replaced therein by an outward movement. By making-these members detachable it enables the structure to be readily cleaned.
In Figures 7 to 10 inclusive, I show a modification in the manner of supporting the outer folding top 11 in its open position. This modification consists in Figs. 7 and 8, in providing a member 28 that extends laterally outward from the vertical wall 29 of the frame 3. The upper face of this member 28 is located in a horizontal plane which corresponds with the horizontal plane of the top portion of the folding member 11, when it is open to its horizontal position. In those figures the hinge 12 is of the same type as shown in Fi s. 1 to 6, inclusive, but the frame or top mem er 6 of the burner box is not provided with the L-shaped portion shown in Fig. 4. As a consequence the member 11 extends to or substantially to the outer edge of the top member 6. In Figs. 7 and 8, the inner folding 'top member 9 will preferably be detachable in the same manner shown in Fig. 4. The supporting member 28 extends substantially horizontally throughout the width of the.range. Therefore, this member 28, as shown, is provided with openings 30 and 31, that may be provided with drawers (not shown) to receive utensils or the members 28 may be formed otherwise to receive utensils.
In Fig. 9, I show a modification in the manner of hinging the member 9 to the top or frame 6. This consists in a suitable link 32 that has its outer end pivotally connected at 33 with the member 9, its inner end 34 suitably connected with the top member or frame 6.
The top member 6 may be constructed so that the link member 32 may enter it when the folding top member 9 is horizontal, or the wall 10 of the baking oven 1 may be constructed to permit the said member 32 to enter it, or the member 9 may have recesses or openings to accommodate the link member 32 when the saidmember is either open or closed, or the said member 9 may simply open against the link 32 and close against the link 32. The link member 32 is preferably detachably connected at its lower end with the top member 6. i
While I have described in considerable detail the specific construction of the present improvement, I wish it to be understood that variations in constructions from that shown and described may be made without departing from the scope of the present invention. so long as such changes are within a liberal interpretation of the appended claims.
