IMPROVEMENT IN COMBINED ERASER AND PENCIL.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 186,885, dated January 30, 1877; application filed August 26, 1876.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, PHILIP Somme, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Rubber Eraser and Lead-Pencil Combined, which invention is fully set forth in the following specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 represents a sectional view of my improvement applied to a lead -pencil, and Fig. 2 a side elevation.

This invention relates to an improvement on that class of combined rubber erasers and lead-pencils in which the connection between the eraser and the pencil is efi'ected by means ofa paper tube. In devices ofthis class, as heretofore constructed, the rubber eraser is glued into one end of a paper tube, the opposite end oi which fits a tenon formed at the end of a lead-pencil, being secured in position by glue or other suitable means, and as the eraser wears off the paper tube is cut down, so as to expose a fresh portion of the rubber. This operation of cutting off the paper tube is objected to by some persons. Rubber erasers have also been secured in the ends of metallic tubes, which fit the pencil, and which have to be made of considerable length to afford a good hold. They are therefore comparatively expensive to make.

My invention consists in the combination of a rubber eraser, a metallic retaining tube screwthread, a paper tube, and a pencil, the paper tube serving to secure the metallic tube with its eraser to the pencil, as hereinafter more fully set forth, whereby the rubber eraser as it wears off can be adjusted, and the me tallic tube can be adjusted in the paper tube.

In the drawing, the letter A designates a lead-pencil, which may be tapering, as shown in the drawing, or which may be cylindrical or in any other suitable form or shape. On one end of this pencil is formed a tenon, a, which fits a paper tube, B, and within this paper tube is arranged a metallic tube, 0, for the reception of the rubber eraser D. The paper tube can be readily secured on the tenon a by glue or other suitable cement, and it is made of such a diameter that when it is attached to the pencil it forms an unbroken continuation of the same. The metallic tube 0 is provided with a screw-thread, so that by turning the rubber the latter moves in or out, and as the rubber wears 011' a fresh portion can be brought into use, and the metal tube is also provided with an external as well as an internal screw-thread, so that it will have a firm hold in the paper tube, and at the same time afford a good hold for the rubber eraser, allowing of screwing the same in or out.

By these means a simple, cheap, and durable connection between the metallic rubberretaining tube 0 and the pencil is obtained, the uniform surface of the pencil is preserved, and the rubber eraser can be adjusted for use as the same wears off.

What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

The combination of the rubber eraser D and metallic retainingtube O, the paper tube B, and pencil A, the said paper tube serving to secure the metallic tube 0 with its eraser to the pencil, substantially as described.
