Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 13, 1915.
Application filed October 4, 1913. Serial No. 793,477.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY LA CAssE, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Los Angeles, county of Los Angeles, State of California, have invented a certain new and useful Pencil-Sharpener; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to pencil sharpeners, and it may be said to consist in the provision of the novel and advantageous features and in the novel and improved construction, arrangement and combination of parts as will be apparent from the description and claims which followhereinafter.
One object of the invention is to provide a novel and improved pencil sharpener consisting of a hollow body with a succession of blades for cutting away any desired amount of the material covering the lead of the pencil, said body having means thereon other than the blades for pointing the lead; where by the lead is not likely to be broken in sharpening the pencil.
Another object of the invention. is to provide a novel and improved pencil sharpener in which the blades are removable and arranged in a slanting position on the hollow body so as to smoothly shave or shear the material covering the lead of the pencil without any breaking or tearing of the material.
Further objects of the invention are to provide a novel and improved pencil sharpener which is simple in construction, convenient and elfective in use, and neat in appearance.
Other objects and the advantages of the invention will be apparent to those skilled in the art from a consideration of the following description of the preferred form of construction embodying it, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings in which Figure 1 is a view of the pencil sharpener; Fig. 2 is an end view of the same; Fig. 3 is another view of the pencil sharpener; Fig. 4c is a fragmentary view of a lead pencil after being sharpened by the pencil sharp ener; Fig. 5 is a fragmentary view of a portion of the body of the pencil sharpener; Fig. 6 is a longitudinal sectional view of the body of the pencil sharpener, taken on the line 6-6 of Fig. 5'; Fig. 7 is a crosssectional view taken on the line 7-7 of Fig. 1; Fig. 8 is a cross-sectional View taken on the line 8-8 of Fig. 3; and Figs. 9 and 10 are views of the cutting blades.
The body or barrel 11 has a bore 12 theren which in the rear part 13 of the body 11 is slightly greater in diameter than the lead pencil 1 1 and in the forward part 15 of the body is slightly greater in diameter than the lead 18 of the lead pencil; said bore being formed with alternate tapering and cylindrical portions 16 and 17 between the rear and forward parts of the body. The rear exterior part of the body 11 is preferably provided with a roughened surface 19 to facilitate holding the body between the fingers of the user. The body 11 is formed with a-plurality of cutaway portions 20 with grooves 21 at the inner end thereof adjacent to the tapering portions 16 of the bore 12. In the grooves 21 are disposed blades 22 and 23 which are adapted to make successively deeper cuts in the material covering the lead of the lead pencil 14 and which are preferably arranged at an angle of approximately ninety degrees from each other. As shown, the blades 22 and 23 are arranged slanting inwardly and forwardly of the hollow body 11 and have the cutting edges 24 thereof slanting outwardly forwardly with respect to the axis of the body 11. The outer ends 25 of the blades 22 and 23 are rounded to be flush with the periphery of the body 11 and have thereon flat projections 26 to be engaged by the heads of the screws 27 when the blades are set in place in the grooves 21. The blades 22 and 23 have openings 28 therein for the insertion of a suitable pointed implement, not shown, to raise the blades out of the grooves 21.
When a pencil to be sharpened is pressed into the bore 12 and turned, the straight or cylindrical portion 17 supports the pencil while the tapering portions 16 guide the pencil to have the blades 22 and 23 smoothly shave away, in curved steps, the material covering the lead of the pencil. The lead of the pencil passes through the forward portion 15 of the bore, and the shavings of the material covering the lead pass outwardly through the openings 29.
The means for pointing the lead of the pencil is preferably disposed on the forward part of the body and may consist of a groove 30 with roughened walls, wherein the lead may be sharpened by a longitudinal and rotary motion of the pencil, or an opening 31 in one end of the body 11 leading to; the sharpened edges of a slot 32 in the body 11 wherein the lead may be sharpened by a retary and forward movement of the lead pencil.
I claim 1. A lead pencil sharpener, comprising a body having a bore therein, the bore in the rear part ofthe body being greater in diameter than in the forward part of the body, and said bore being formed with alternate tapering and cylindrical portions between the rear and forward parts of the body and with cutaway portions with grooves at the inner end thereof, and a plurality of blades, said blades adjustably disposed in said grooves adjacent to the tapering portions of the bore at an angle with each other and arranged slanting inwardly and forwardly of thebody andhaving the cutting edges thereof slanting outwardly and forwardly with respect to the axis of the body, substantially as described.
2. A lead pencil sharpener, comprising a body having a bore therein, the bore in the rear part of the body being greater in diameter than in the forward part of the body, and said bore being formed with alternate tapering and cylindrical portions between the rear and forward parts of the body and with cutaway portions with grooves at the inner end thereof, and a plurality of blades disposed in said grooves adjacent to the tapering portions of the bore at an angle with each other, said blades having openings therein and arranged slanting inwardly and forwardly of the body and having the cutting edges thereofv slanting outwardly forwardly with respect to the axis of the body, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof, I have signed my naine to this specification in the presence of two subscribin witnesses at Los Angeles county of Los Kngeles, State of California, this 27th day of September A. D. 1913.
