CORK-WOOD PEN-HOLDER.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 414,059, dated. October 29, 1889.

To all whom, it may concern:

Be it known that I, FREDERICK M. LIBBY, of Portland, county of Cumberland, State of Maine, have invented an Improvement in Cork-\Vood Pen-Holders,of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification, like letters on the drawings representing like parts.

This invention relates to pen-holders of that class having an elastic movement, and has for its object to construct the pen-holder as will be described, whereby the elastic movement is obtained without that objectionable side motion characteristic of other elastic pen-holders as heretofore constructed and known to me.

My improved pen-holder is cheap and simple in construction.

My improved pen-holder is composed of a central core of yielding or flexible material, preferably wood, but which may be of steel or of fiat metal or wire, the said core being preferably made wider than it is thick, and an outer covering or body made of cork, soft rubber, or analogous material which from its nature is elastic. The central core is provided with a recess or socket to receive a plug, by which the pen is held in place.

My invention therefore consists, essentially, of a pen-holder composed of a central yielding or flexible core and a body of cork or analogous material, substantially as will be described.

Figure 1 is a side elevation of an elastic pen-holder embodying my invention, and Fig. 2 a top or plan view of the pen-holder with the upper half of the body removed-that is, the said figure is a top or plan view of the pen-holder below the line :0 as, Fig. 1.

The central core (0, preferably made as a thin piece of wood,but which may be corsetsteel or fiat metal or wire, is preferablymade wider than it is thick. The central core a at one end is provided, as shown, with a socket or recess, into which is fitted a sleeve or thimble to, having inserted into it a plug a preferably of metal, and between which plug and Serial No. 289,404:- (Nomodel-l thimble the pen is inserted. The core a is covered by a body I), composed, preferably, of pieces of cork, which are glued or otherwise firmly secured to the core, the said body being of substantially the same shape as the core. same length as the body,

Instead of making the body of cork, which I prefer on account of its being pleasant to the touch, I may make it of soft rubber or analogous material, the nature of which will impart elasticity to the pen-holder.

By making the core wider than it is thick side motion of the pen and holder is prevented when the penholder is being used.

I am aware that pen-holders made'wholly of cork are not new; but they are expensive and liable to become broken, whereas my improved pen-holder is cheap and simple of construction and strong.

Instead of securing the pen between the plug a and sleeve to, I may employ the ordinary metal tip such as is used on the cheaper class of penholders, the end of the penholder being fitted into the said metal tip.

I claim 1. An elastic pen-holder composed of a central yielding or flexible core made wider than it is thick and a body of cork or analogous material, substantially as described.

2. An elastic pen-holder composed of a central yielding or flexible core wider than it is thick and a body composed of pieces of cork secured to opposite sides of the said core, substantially as described.

3. An elastic pen holder composed of a central wooden core wider than it is thick and a body composed of pieces of cork secured to opposite sides of the said core, substantially as described.
