To all 'whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, WALTER KING, citizen of the United States, residing at Brownstown, in the county of Fayette and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Penholders, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to pens and penholders, and the invention has for its primary object a simple, durable and eihcient construction of pen-holder, the parts of which are so arranged as to hold a plurality of nibs or pen-points which may be brought instantly into an operative position or retracted one after the other into the barrel of the device whereby the pen-man may have at hand with the one pen-holder, say, a sharp pointed pen and a stub pen, or one pen for red ink and one for blue or black ink or writing fluid.

Vith this and other objects in view aswill more fully appear as the description proceeds, the invention consists in certain constructions, arrangements and combinations of the parts that I shall hereinafter fully describe and claim, and essentially in a penholder embodying a barrel or tube, a spindle mounted to rotate about its longitudinal axis in said tube and formed with longitudinal grooves or channels and a helical rod encircling the spindle and secured within the barrel, the pen points or nibs being preferably formed with side flanges working in the grooves or channels of the spindle and with end lugs that are designed to engage in and between the convolutions of the helical rod or wire so that by turning the spindle, the nibs will be retracted or projected into and from the barrel and held either in an operative or inoperative position as may be desired.

For a full understanding of the invention, reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawings in which:

Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indi- Referring to the drawing, the numeral l i designates the barrel of my improved penholder, the same being of any desired length and diameter and being preferably cylindrical and formed of any desired metal or material. l/Vithin the barrel l is a spindle 2, said spindle being mounted to rotate about its longitudinal axis and held within the barrel in any desired way. In the present instance, the spindle is provided with a thickened portion 3 at each end of which is a ring 4, said ring working in beads 5 formed in the barrel whereby to prevent longitudinal movement of the spindle while at the same time permitting the free rotation thereof.

The spindle 2 is formed with any desired number of longitudinal grooves or channels 6 and the nibs or pen points 7 are preferably formed with side flanges 8 designed to ride in said grooves. A helical wire spring or rod 9 encircles the spindle 2 and is secured at its ends within the barrel, and the pen points or nibs 7 are formed with outstanding end lugs l0 designed to engage in and between the convolutions ofthe rod 9 whereby a rotation of the rod in one direction or the other will cause the pen points to move longitudinally within the barrel l so as to be projected from the barrel into an operative position for writing or retracted within the barrel when not desired for use.

In order to hold the spindle l as against rotation after the desired adjustment has been eeeted, I have provided a sleeve l1 which is mounted lupon the barrel near one end thereof, and which is arranged for a limited longitudinal movement therein, said sleeve being formed with a longitudinal slot 11a by which it may be slipped over a pin l2 secured to or formed integral with the spindle at the rear projecting end thereof so as to hold the spindle from turning.

From the foregoing description in connection with the accompanying drawing the operation of my improved pen-holder will be apparent. In the practical use of the device, two or more pens are slipped one after the other into the end of the barrel and into engagement between the convolutions of the rod 9 and are worked rearwardly in the barrel by a rotation of the spindle in one direction.

l/Vhen it is desired to project a pen point, the spindle is merely turned in the opposite d irection, and held locked after the pen pointis protruded from the barrel to the desired extent.

Having t-hus described the invention, what is claimed as new is l. A device of the character described, comprising a barrel, a helical rod secured within the same, a spindle mounted for a rotary movement about its longitudinal axis within the barrel and encircled by said rod, the spindle being formed with longitudinal grooves, in combination with an element having inturned side flanges working in said grooves, and an outwardly projecting lug engaged between the convolutions of the rod.

2. A pen-holder, comprising a barrel, a

spindle .mounted for a rotary movement about its longitudinal axis within the barrel, the spindle being provided near one end with a thickened port-ion with rings encircling it at opposite ends of said thickened portion, the barrel being 'formed with beads accommodating said rings whereby to prevent the longitudinal movement of the spindle relative to the barrel while permitting the rotary movement of the former and a rod coiled around the spindle and secured within the barrel.
