This invention relates to typewriting m'achines wherein an auxiliary inking ribbon is interposed. between superposed work-sheets for manifolding, especially of bills or statement-sheets and a record-sheet. The invention is shown in connection with an auxiliary ribbon-device, such as disclosed in co-pending application of Jesse A. B. Smith, Serial No.
17 7 ,884, filed March 24, 1927, (now Patent No.
1,764,900, dated June 17, 1930), and deals largely with means for guiding the leading end of work-sheets up past the printing line, the object being to minimize time and labor during their insertion around the platen from the rear thereof.
The auxiliary ribbon is fed from aspoolat one side of the platen-carriage down to the printing line, then in a horizontal stretch along the printing line to be led up again and wound upon a corresponding spool opposite the first one. The horizontal or active. stretch of the ribbon is held upon the printing line close to the platen by a displaceable ribboncarrier, which allows said active stretch to be swung upwardly and forwardly clear of the platen when the record-sheet is to be inserted from the rear. Difficulties have been experienced when inserting a' record-sheet with the auxiliary ribbon in raised inoperative position, in that the leading edge of the paper, normally flaring away from the platen-surface at the front thereof, would clash with the auxiliary ribbon or parts of the ribbon-holder, causing the operator to use her fingers in guidingthe leading paper-edge rearwardly to prevent its getting wrinkled or injured.

According to this invention a displaceable paper-guide is provided, which, normally out of function, may be rendered active to guide or deflect the paper across the typing line closely to the platen-surface and clear of the obstructing parts, when the auxiliary ribbon is swung to inoperative position.

It is understood that a movable front paper-guide substantially as herein proposed may also be used'with advantage as a mechanism in itself or in connection with other attachmentsor devices and wherever a certain guidance of the leading paper edge over and beyond the typing line is desired for convenienceduring insertion.

Figure 1 of the drawings shows an auxiliary inking ribbon 15 for duplicating purposes, operative upon-the platen between a recordsheet 16 and a statement-sheet 17, the latter being written upon by means of a usual typebar 18 and the usual oscillating ribbon 19 (fractionally indicated in dot and dash).
The mechanism which handles the auxiliary ribbon is in the form of an attachment mounted upon the ordinary Underwood platen-frame and herein shown to include brackets 19* mounted upon the flanges 20 which form the top of the sides 11. Said brackets 19, in effect forming continuations of the sides of the platen-frame, may be rigidly interconnected by an integral cross-bar 21. Said bar carries, at either end, and mounted upon the back face thereof, a rising bracket 22, upon which is mounted a spool 23 by means of a stud or axle 23 to handle the auxiliary ribbon 15, which is carried from one spool downwardly to the typing line, then along the typing line to present a horizontal or typing stretch to the type-bar, to be led upwardly again for delivery upon the other spool. A mechanism to feed the ribbon is not shown on the drawing although indicated by a 1ratchet-wheel 24 shown on the left-hand s 00 A ribbon-deflector or angle guide 25, over which the ribbon folds, adjacent either end of the platen, determines the horizontal stretch of the auxiliary ribon, said deflectors forming part of a swingable ribbon-carrier, which serves to displace the horizontal part of the ribbon to allow the advancing front edge of the record-sheet to cross the typing line when being inserted from the rear. To constitute the swingable ribbon-carrier, the deflectors 25 form the terminals of a flat bar 26, which, in addition, has forward angular extensions 27 which confine the ribbon-carrier between brackets 28 mounted upon the front face of the above-mentioned connecting cross-bar 21. These extensions are formed at the ends with vertical arms 29 (see Figure 1), both of which have double pin-and-slot connection with their adjacent brackets 28,
the slots being shaped in such manner as to guide the ribbon-carrier in a suitable shift- To shift the ribbon-carrier in its slots, :1 rock-shaft 29 is journaled in the brackets 19 and operable by a lever 30 formed with a finger-piece 31. Forwardly-extending crank-arms 32 are .secured to the rock-shaft 29 to align with the outer side face of each bracket 28, with the free ends provided with studs 33 that pass through slots 34 provided in said brackets 28 concentrically to the rock-she. ft 29, said studs 33 to pivotally support the upper ends of the pair of vertically-disposed arms 29. The lower parts of the arms 29 carry studs 34 that pass through slots 35 and are slidably held against the faces of the brackets 28 by the heads of the studs bearing against the opposite faces of the brackets 28. Slot 35 is a compound slot and formed by the merging of two arcuate slots 36, providing for an intermediate position of the ribbon-carrier (not shown on the drawing). Raising of the finger-piece 31 results in rocking the shaft .29 to raise the arms 32 to advance the studs 33 and 34 along their respective slots from the normal position of Figures 1 and 2 to the position shown at Figure 3. At 37 in F igures 3 and 4 are indicated paper-guiding members in the nature of the usual wingscales disposed at either side of a usual typeguide 37* and stationarily mounted upon the machine-frame. These members 37 are to guide the worksheet from the deflector 13, until close to the typing line, and, in the present case, are provided with horizontal flanges 38 at the top for the further purpose of facilitating the front insertion of small worksheets. A cam-pin 38 is rigidlv provided upon the inner face of each bracket 28 and co-operates with a cam-face 39 formed upon the vertical arms 29, so as to assist in guiding the movable ribbon-carrier when the studs 34 thereon are sliding from intermediate to upper extreme position within the compound slots 35. A detent-sector 40 is secured upon the left-hand end of the rock-shaft 29 and has three notches 41 to co-operate with a pawl 42 held under spring-tension 43, said notches corresponding to extreme and intermediate 119 positions of the rock-shaft- 29 When a record-sheet is to be inserted at the rear of the platen, to be positioned under the auxiliary inking ribbon, the latter will be displaced, as described above, from its posi- 115 tion in Figures 1 and 2 to the Figure 3 position. A glance at Figure 3 shows that the leading edge of the paper, if not otherwise directed, is liable to flare away from the plat-- en-surface in leaving the scales37 and catch 12 on the auxiliary ribbon 15 or parts of the ribbon-carrier, as on the flat bar 26 or the rock-shaft 29 requiring the operators attention to manually deflect the paper to the rear, clear of the obstructing parts.
,The novel deflector 14*, designed toimprove this manual paper-guiding operation, includes a. lever 44 of flat material, which, intermediate its ends, has integral bent-over cars 45' to receive a fulcrum pin or screw 46, 130
supported upon a U-shaped bearing member 47 (see Figure 3), which is screwed at 48 to the front rail 49, which is of angular crosssection and is part of the platen-frame men- 5 tioned above. The lever 44, at its right-hand end, is formed withan upward angular extension 50, to present a cam-face for a cam-member 51, the latter forming a lower extension upon the right-hand vertical arm 29 of the ribbon-carrier. As the ribbon-carrier is raised, a bent-over end 52 of said extension 51 will urge said angular extension 50 of lever 44 against the pressure of a leaf-spring 5 3 to cause the opposite end of the lever 44, which is enlarged to form a paper guiding or deflecting blade 54, to swing towards the platen substantially to take the place of the now ineflective ribbon- (see Figure 3). The paper-guiding blade 54 is shaped to conform Ito the platen-surface, and, while having proper clearance therewith, is effective to deflect the record sheet, to clear the obstructing ribbon-mechanism, said record-sheet being inserted and fed around the platen with the aid of usual feed-rolls 55.
After the record sheet is positioned, for type manifolding, the finger-piece 31 may-be depressed to lower the auxiliary ribbon to working position (see Figure 2), simultaneously causing the paper-guiding blade 54 to recede to ineflective position, as clearly seen from Figures 1 and 4. The bill or statement sheet 17 then may be front-inserted over the auxiliary ribbon 15, and collated over the 35 record sheet upon the usual collating table and between the collating members 56, which are fast to the connecting cross-bar 21.
It will be understood that by a single operation of lifting the finger-piece 31, the ribbon is displaced from the typing line and the deflector 54 displaced to apaper-deflecting position at the platen and both deflected members locked by the detent 42 in their key-displaced positions, leaving the operators hands 4 free to insert a record-sheet to the feed-rollers 55, and, by a forward spinning movement of the platen, the record-sheet is quickly advanced over the typing line and under the ribbon to the first typing line thereon,the
displacements being automatic to the manual operation of the finger-piece. It will be noted at Figure 2 that the spring 53 normally holds the deflector 54 against the carriage rail and that the detent 42 holds the ribbon- 55 carrier away fromactual contact with the platen and prevents actual contact between I the arm 50 and the cam '51, so that the ribbon-carrier can adjust itself to various thicknesses of'supe'rposed manifold sheets; and

In a typewriting machine, the combination .with a revoluble work-sheet-feeding platen, a carriage-frame supporting said platen, a ribbon and a ribbon-displacing mechanism to remove the ribbon from the typing line of the platen, of a swingable paper-deflector supported upon the front rail of the platen-frame, and having a paper-de- ,flectin blade, spring-means to hold the blade norma- 1y against the rail, and cam-means operated by the ribbon-shifting mechanism, effective to engage and advance the blade towards the t ping line, after the displacement of the ri bon from the typing line, and deflect the paper ,rearwardly over the platen and under the ribbon.
