Be' it known that I, Jessa A. B. S1vr1rn, a citizen of the United States, residing in Glenbrook, in the county of Fail-field and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Type- Writin Machines, of which the followingis a speci cation.

In the Underwood fan-fold typewriting machine,- the typewriter carriage 1 travels on a rear rail 2 being fed forward in the usual manner at every stroke of a type-bar 3. In this position, the fan-fold web 17 may be easily drawn forward under the platen, it bein alined by the usual side gages, not shown ierein. At the same time, a record sheet 18 may be threaded forward between the platen and the fan-fold web 17. In drawing forward the web, there are threaded between itsfolds two or more carbon sheets 19 and 20, according to the number of copies to be'made in the fan-fold web, and there is also threaded between the record-sheet and the fan-fold web a carbon sheet 21. These carbon sheets are caught in holders 22 in the manner usual in these fan-fold machines, said holders forming part of a light carriage '23, which travels on the rails 5 and 6, a'iid is adapted to seize the carbon sheets and to feed them forward and backward between the folds of the fan-fold sheet or web when it is in the horizontal position seen in Fig. 5, in which position there is so little friction between the carbon sheets and the folded web that the sheets may be easily pulled rearwardly by means of the carriage 23.
To enable the typist to operate the carriage 23 conveniently, it is rovided with a forwardly-extending han le 24. In threading the fan fold sheet and the record sheet beneath the platen in the manner described, it is frequently customary merely to advance the web sheets and carbonsheets far enough to enable the feed rolls to grip them when the platen is swung back to normal writing a position (see Fig. 2). If it be desired to accurately posititon the record sheet at this time, the record sheet may be advanced until it strikes a pair of gages 25, of which there is one at each side of the paper table 16, which I gages may be in the form of rolls.- The carbon sheets may be similarly positioned by allowing them to be drawn forward with their carriage 23 until said carriage strikes a stop, such as the cross-bar 26, which arrests them in the right position. Ina typewritin machine, the combination with a revolub l e platen, of feed rolls beneath said platen, a-paperTtable adapted to receive the leading edges of work-sheets fed around said platen, an end gage for the work-sheets, means for conducting the worksheet nearest the platen out of the way of said gage, and holding means for said work sheet separate fromthework-sheets brought against the gage.
