TYIPIEWRITING` MACHINE.

This invention relates to posting and billing by the use of a typewriting and oomputing machine, and more particularly to the typing of entries concurrently upon 6 superposed work-sheets, such as statement, ledger and proof sheets, and for other puroses.
The ledger and statement sheets pertaining to a customers account have been usually coupled together throughout the month, and inserted together with an Interleaved carbon over the record-sheet in the machine from time to time for entering transactions thereon (as in Kidder Patent No. 1,223.075, dated April 17, 1917). At the end of the month the statement-sheet was sent to the customer, while the ledger-sheet was placed with the succeeding months statement-sheet of the same customer to re- 0 ceive further entries. In accordance with this system, it was necessary to interleave a carbon-sheet with the ledger and statement sheets preparatory to the typing of each entry. and to strip this carbon from between the sheets after an entry had been made.
One of the sheets, of necessity, received carbon impressions, which was not wholly satisfactory. since the statement had to be mailed to thevcustomer, and the ledger-sheet had to ."0 be preserved for a permanent record.
It is an object of the present invention to overcome these objections while preservinl;r the advantages of making entries upon the statement and ledger sheets at a single To this end. provision is made in a typewriting machine of a main ribbon and of a duplicating or auxiliary ribbon, the auxiliary ribbon being arranged to lie between the statement and ledger sheets to print upon the underneath one of said sheets,
the ledger-sheet.. lVith this arrangement the operator is required only to place the statement and ledger sheets in the ma-" chine, guiding them to opposite sides of the auxiliary ribbon, to collate them with relation to each other and to the proofsheet. to type an entry, and to replace them in their receptacle near the machine to await a further entry. There is no need to interleave a carbon-sheet between the statement and ledger sheets, and both of these sheets receive ribbon-impressions.
In accordance with one feature of the invention, provision is made of means for moving the auxiliary ribbon to a work-inpivoted on the carriage of the machine. The n ribbon-frame-lifting lever may be located in proximity to the line-space lever and may be coaxial with said lever, the arrangement being such that either of said levers may be operated independently of the other, or both of them may be operated at a single stroke, if desired. This arrangement is particularly advantageous because of the fact that a statement and ledger entry usually, but not always, consists of a single typed line.
An important feature of the invention resides in the combination with the main and auxilia ribbon mechanism of means for controlling a proof-sheet during the insertion and collation of the statement and ledger sheets and for assisting such insertion and collation. Provision is made of a rear insertion chute for guidin the ledger and statement sheets to the desired lfield of the platen and of a support for the rear end of the proof-sheet to hold it away from the rear insertion chute so as not to interfere with the rear insertion of the ledger and statement sheets into the machine. A co1- lating frame has a roller to run upon the platen at the upper front portion thereof to hold the proof-sheet thereagainst, and has guides for engaging the side edges of the proof-sheet at the delivery side of the platen to prevent lateral shifting or skewing of the sheet when the main feed-rolls are cast olf from the platen. A collating table on the collating frame at the delivery side of the platen includes side gages for the ledgersheet and a. clam for detaining it in adjusted position w le the statement-sheet il being collated over it, and while the auxiliary ribbon is being returned downwardly from its sheet-collating position to its printing position.
When it is desired to insert ledger and statement sheets into the machine, the auxiliary ribbon-frame is swung to lift the auxiliary ribbon to work-inserting position and the feed-rolls are cast ofi' from the platen. The ledger and statement sheets are inserted around the platen from the rear with the leading edge of the duplicate sheet, which may be the ledger-sheet, substantially in advance of the leading edge of the original sheet, which may be the statement-sheet. The operator presses the upper margin of the duplicate sheet back with the fingers of one hand to guide it to the rear of the auxiliary ribbon while advancing both sheets with the other hand, and then releases the pressure while continuin the advance of the sheets to cause the original sheet to be advanced in front of the auxiliary ribbon. The workinserting position of the auxiliary ribbon is especially1 designed to facilitate this operation, the ribbon in this position being 1ocated a substantial distance out from the platen, and yet a considerable distance behind the path naturally followed by a worksheet fed forward freely from the platen. He next adjusts the duplicate (ledger) sheet to the correct writing position and clamps it by the clamp on the collating table, after which he adjusts the original (statement) sheet to Writing position, makes the main feed-rolls effective, and casts off the clamp. He then presses a finger-piece for lowering the auxiliary7 ribbon-frame to locate the auxiliary ribbon in writing position and types the entry.
The auxiliary ribbon. lying as it does hetween the statement and ledger sheets. will not only print upon the face of the ledgersheet which is desired, but will also print upon the back of the statement-sheet which is objectionable unless this result is guarded against. In accordance with one feature of the invention, provision is made to prevent the typing of impressions upon the back of the statement-sheet. This may be done by mounting a shield to lie between the auxiliary ribbon and the back of the statementsheet, which shield may consist of a strip of paper of about the same width as the auxiliary ribbon held in place over the auxiliary ribbon by spring clamps mounted on the opposite ends of the auxiliary' ribbonframe. These clamps are preferably so constructed that they tend to tension the shield strip as they are moved to clamping position. The shield strip is, therefore, held before the auxiliary ribbon under tension, and thus helps to overcome the tendency of the statement sheet to displace the auxiliary ribbon at line-feeding. The shield or the like prevents the outside work-sheet from becoming smudged from repeated insertions and withdrawals of the unit during the month in which the account is accumulating.
An Underwood bookkeeping or combined adding and typewriting machine, embodying the present improvements, forms a unit which renders it practicable in a revoluble platen machine to carry out the method of accounting above given, viz, making entries and computations item by item from day to day upon an original bill and its companion original ledger-sheet, coupled together throughout the month, to be separated at the end of the month, when the bill is sent to the customer and the ledger-sheet (if filled) is permanently bollnd.

Types are swung upward and rearward by the operation of keys (not shown) between the jaws of a type-guide 11 to strike through the usual vibratory ribbon 12 against the front of a cylindrical laten 13, journaled by its axle 14 in the en s 15 of a platen-frame 16, which frame is vertically shiftable between upper and lower ease positions in a traveling carriage 17. A linespace lever 18, mounted to swing about a vertical fulcrum 19 on the carriage 17, may be operated by its handle 20 to thrust to the rear a line-space slide 21 carrying a-pawl 22 to engagey and rotate a line-space ratchetwheel 23 that has driving connection with the platen-axle 14. Feed-rolls 24 co-operate with the platen 13 to feed the work at line spacing, and these feed-rolls may be cast off, when desired, by the usual finger-piece (not shown).
An auxiliary ribbon 25. to lie behind the statement-sheet A and print upon the ledgersheet B, is carried by an auxiliary ribbonframe 26, comprising a rock-shaft 27 journaled in the ends 15 of the platen-frame 16, and end plates 28 fast on the rock-shaft 27. Each of the end plates 28 supports a ribbon-spool 29 for rotation about a transverse horizontal axis. The end plates 28 extend forwardly to positions slightly in advance of the front of the platen 13 to'form ribbon- Their forward ends are bent Substantially at right angles to direct them toward each other, whereby ribbon-guiding portions 30 are provided extending transversely of the machine (see Figure 9). The portions 30 extend inwardly to points slightly beyond the inner flanges of the ribbonspools 29, where they are bent forwardly to provide ribbon-guiding portions 31 which terminate at their upper ends in arms 32.
Rolls 33, having ribbon-guiding flanges 34 upon them, are mounted in aligned openings 35 in the arms 32 and in the lnain bodies of the plates 28. Inclined slots 36 in the portions 30 and vertical slots 37 in the portions' 31 guide the auxiliary ribbon 25 down from the spools 29 and direct it across the face of the platen 13.
In order to prevent the auxiliary ribbon 25 from making type impressions on the back of the statement-sheet A, and from smudging the sheet during the necessary umerous insertions and withdrawals of the sa le sheet. provision is made of a shield 38. This shield 38 consists of a strip of paper of about the same width as the auxiliary ribbon 25, which is held in position to cover the auxiliary ribbonby clamps 40 mounted at the opposite ends of the auxiliary ribbon-frame 26. One of these clamps 40 comprises a resilient U- shaped member having one leg 41 secured to an end plate 28 of the auxiliary` ribbonframe and a second leg 42 forming a stationary clamp-jaw. Horizontal ears 43, turned outward from the upper and lower extremities of the leg 42, support a pivotpin 44 of a movable resilient clamp-jaw 45. The movable jaw 45 has a finger-piece 46 whereby it may be swung to and from clamping position. The arrangement of the jaws 42 and 45 is such that the movement of the swinging jaw 45 to clamping position tends to tension the shield strip 38, thus assuring that the shield strip will be held before the auxiliary ribbon 25 under tension and will help to prevent displacement of the ribbon 25 in the direction of paper-feeding.
The auxiliary ribbon 25 is fed endwise by mechanism not `shown herein, but the feeding mechanism may be like that disclosed in the application of Kurowski, Serial No.
589,064, filed September 19, 1922 (now Patent No. 1,564,861, dated December 8, 1925).
The auxiliary ribbon-frame 26 is normally urged by spring pressure into position to hold the auxiliary ribbon 25 in writing position. Since it would be difficult, however, to insert a work-sheet between the auxiliary ribbon 25 and the platen 13 with the auxiliary ribbon in writing position, and since frequent insertion of sheets is necessary due to the fact that a ledger and statement entry generally consists of a single line only, provision is made of means for moving the auxiliary ribbon 25 up to a work-inserting position where the insertion of the sheets at opposite sides of the ribbon may be quickly and easily effected. In work-inserting position, the auxiliary ribbon 25 is located somewhat to the rear of the path naturally followed by a work-sheet fed forward freely from the platen 13, but is spaced out a considerable distance from the platen. By inserting the sheetswith the inside one in advance of the outside one and pressing the leadin margin of the inside sheet to the rear, tiie sheets can be readily caused to pass up from the platen 13 at the opposite sides of the auxiliary ribbon 25, as shown in Eigure 5.
The mechanism for swinging the auxiliary ribbon-frame 26 to move the auxiliary ribbon 25 to work-inserting position includes a projection 47 on the left end plate of the auxiliary ribbon-frame and a cam 48 engaging the projection 47 and movable to lift it. The Cam 48 is carried by a ribbon-frameliting slide 49, which is slidingly mounted on the top or lateral extension of the left end 15 of the platen-frame 16 by means of headed screws 50 (Figure 4) that pass through slots 51 in the slide 49 and are threaded into the end member '15 of the platen-frame. At each insertion of the coupled'r bill and ledger sheets in the machine, an item is entered thereon and a computation is simultaneously performed, as, for instance, the one that is explained in the a plication of Vickers, No. 661,540, filed eptember 8, 1923 (now Patent No. 1,600,023, dated September 14, 1926).
The collating table overlies one portion only of the platen, and is substantially narrpwer than the proof-sheet, the 'laterallyprojecting portion of which is exposed by the auxiliary ribbon when the latter is in its raised position, thus permitting typing through the main ribbon directly upon the proof-sheet.
When a fresh roof-sheet C is to be inserted in the machine or when an erasure on the proof-sheet is necessary, it is desirable to swing the collating frame 71 and the auxiliary ribbon 25 up out of the way. The collating frame 71 is swingable about the rock-shaft 27, and has a notch 86 at its rear arranged to be engaged by a spring-pressed detent 87 to hold the collating frame in an elevated position. A projection 88 on the collating frame 71 is arranged to engage a projection 89 on the auxiliary ribbon-frame 26 to cause it to be swung u with the collating frame. Since the collating frame 71and the auxiliary, ribbon-frame 26 are coaxially mounted, these frames swing up as 1f the were a unitary structure without any ten ency to interfere with each other. 0n the return of 'the collating frame 71 to normal position, the auxiliary ribbon-frame 26 will be arrested by the latch 60 and detained in work-inserting position ready for the insertion of statement and ledger sheets. It will be observed that the auxiliary ribbon 25 is withdrawn from between the ledger and statement sheets when the collating frame 71 is swung upward `for making erasures. Since this leaves the ledger and statement sheets without any interposed copying medium, there is no tendency for the erasing on the statement-sheet A to smear the ledgersheet B, and hence the usual steps to guard against this smearing are unnecessary.
The statement and ledger sheets may be kept to ether in a holder, on the bookkeeping-maiine-supporting stand, of the kind disclosed in the patent to Kidder, No. 1.27 8,67 8, granted September 10,' 1918. When an entry is to. be made, the sheets are removed from the holder and inserted in the machine without the necessity of inserting a carbon, and when the entry has been completed, the statement and ledger sheets are returned to the holder to await further entries.
When the statement and ledger sheets have'been positioned for writing, the operator first copies the old balance, and runs it into the computing mechanism. He then writes the debit or creditentry, runs this also into the computing mechanism, and then copies the new balance from the total exhibited by the computing mechanism. It will be seen that the items appearing on both of the ribbon-copies are both typed and completed simultaneously so that comparison to assure correspondence is unnecessary.
It will be understood that the organization including the auxiliary ribbon supported on the caLiage, with the collating table, elimi- 30 nates the necessity of the carbon-sheet that has been necessary heretofore between the collated sheets. The carbon-sheet has been highly objectionable, as it required considerable care and time to manipulate. The carbon-sheet was also liable to smudge the ledger-sheet and to become dislocated while adjustin the statement-sheet relatively to the previously adjusted ledger-sheet. By the use of an auxiliary ribbon with the collating 90 device all this care is eliminated, and conse quently the operation of inserting the sheets to be collated is expedited.
Heretofore it has been the practice in some instances to have the right-hand edge of the ledger-sheet (nearest the platen) extend slightly beyond the right-hand edge of the statement-sheet to enable a mark to be made on the ledger-sheet opposite each last entry of a series, said mark indicating the last entry on the record-sheet and serving to assist in adjusting the statement-sheet relatively thereto at a subsequent insertion of the statementsheet and ledger-sheet into the machine. With the present arrangement of the collating device and auxiliary ribbon, the marks may be omitted, since the statenient-sheet may be readily moved temporarily to one side of the platen to expose the underlying ledger-sheet suiiicientl to observe the last entry, so that the le ger-sheet may be adjusted to the writing line. After the ledger-sheet has been adjusted, the statement-sheet may be moved back into overlapping relationship and may be adjusted to the writing line.
The statement-sheet and ledger-sheet may also b e inserted around the platen in the following manner: The statement or outer sheet may be first inserted around the laten from the back, and brought forwar l in front of the auxiliary ribbon, said ri bon having previously beenV lifted to its sheet-inserting and collating position. Since the leading edge of any work-sheet has a tendency to move away from the platen, it will be understood that the leading edge of the statement-sheet, as it is advanced upwardly in front of the platen, naturally advances in front of the displaced auxiliary ribbon with- IU out interference therewith. After the statement-sheet has been thus inserted, the ledgersheet may be inserted from the front of the machine by introducing its lower edge between the laten and the auxiliary ribbon, which auxi iary ribbon, in its 'sheet-inserting position, stands a considerable distance away from the platen to allow the ledgersheet to be freely inserted between it and the platen. The ledger-sheet may then be pushed down around the platen behind the statement-sheet and adjusted to the desired position.

A typewriting machine for t pin items to be billed and posted, having ayrevog-r luble platen, a statement and ledger sheet collat' device, including a collating table dispose above the platen at the delivery side thereof, a mechanism for presenting a ribbon to the outer of two work-sheets, and mechanism for feedingv an auxiliary ribbon between the outer work-sheet and the inner work-sheet to make a permanent record copy upon the inner work-sheet, said auxiliary rlbbon-mechanism including a back-printprevention shield for the auxiliar ribbon, and devices for shifting said auxi iary ribbon and said shield to a sheet-collatin position ad'acent the lower end of sai collating table, so that said auxiliary ribbon and said shield will be dis d in the rear of said main ribbon and su stantially parallel to the work-face of said collatin table to 'avoid smudging the outer wor -sheet during numerous insertions and removals of the same.

4. In a typewriting machine having a platen, in combination, a swingablevframe arranged for normally carrying an auxiliary ribbon at the printing Aline of said platen, a swingable frame carrying a collating table above said platen, said ribboncarrying frame being swingable u wardly to bring said ribbon in a statement-s eet and ledger-sheet-inserting and collating position adjacent thelower end of said collating table, means for swinging said'ribbon-frame and said collating-table frame, as a unitary structure, from their normal positions upwardly and rearwardly to a position for insorting a tally-sheet around said platen, re- V leasable devices for locking said frames in their tally-sheet-inserting positions, and instrumentalities eil'ective for stopping said ribbon-'carrying frame in its collatin position upon release of said locking evices and the lowering of said frames.
5. In a typewriting machine havin a platen, around which may be fed a plurity of work-sheets, and a main vibrating ribbon for typing on the outermost one of said sheets, the combination of mechanism for laterally feeding at the printing line an auxiliary ribbon between said outermost sheet and the next underlying sheet, a laterally-fixed back-print-prevention shield betweensaid auxiliary ribbon and said outermost sheet, and instrumentalities releasably holding said shield, whereby the latter may be replaced when worn or soaked with ink without affecting said auxiliary ribbon.
6. In a typewriting machine having a platen', around which may be fed a plurality of superposed work-sheets, the bottom worksheet having a marginal portion extending beyond the overlying work-sheets, and a main vibrating ribbon, the combination of displaceable mechanism for laterally feeding an auxiliary ribbon between the two outmost work-sheets, a back-print-prevention shield for said auxiliary ribbon, and instrumentalities on said mechanism releasably holdin said shield, said mechanism being mova le upwardly to raise said auxiliar ribbon and said shield from the printing ine, to permit typing by said main ribbon on said marginal portion of said bottom work-sheet.
7. A combined typewriting and computing machine including a platen, a main ribbon, an auxiliary ribbon at the front and back of which work-sheets are positioned,
ka collating frame for clamping a proofsheet with its superposed carbon against the platen to hold them against displacement while the other sheets are being adjusted, and for assisting in the adjustment of said sheets, the collatingi frame being swingable to a position to ma e the proof-sheet accessible for erasures, and means operable by the collating frame when so swung to withdraw the auxiliary ribbon a substantial distance from the platen, so that no copy medium will be inter osed between the statement and ledger s eets where the erasure is to be made.
8. In a typewriting machine, in combination, a main ribbon for writing on an outside statement-sheet, an auxiliary ribbon for Writing upon an inside ledger-sheet, linespacing mechanism for advancing the work including a proof-sheet behind Said firstmentioned sheets, said line-s acing mechanism including a line-s ace lever, and an auxiliary ribbon-control ing mechanism including a lever actuable to move the auxiliary ribbon from writing position to a work-inserting position to facilitate the insertion of fresh statement and ledger sheets at opposite sides of the ribbon, the auxiliary ribbon-shifting lever being located in proximity to the line-space lever so that it may be engaged and actuated at the same operation with the line-space lever or independently thereof the line-space lever being also o rable in pendently of the auxiliary n bon-shifting lever.
9. In a typewriting machine, in combination, a main ribbon for writing on an outside statement-sheet, an auxiliary ribbon for writing upon an inside ledger-sheet, 'liric-A spacing mechanism for advancing the work including a proof-sheet behind said firstmentioned sheets, said line-spacing mechanism including a line-space lever, and an auxiliary ribbon-controlling mechanism includin a lever actuable to move the auxiliary ri bon from writing position to a workinserting position to facilitate the insertion of fresh statement and ledger sheets at opposite sides of the ribbon, the auxiliary rib bon-shifting lever being supported coaxial with the line-space lever, the line-space lever being arranged to be operated at th-y same operation with the auxiliary ribbonshifting lever or independently thereof, as desired.
l0. In a 'typewriting machine, the combination of a carriage, a platen on said carriage, au auxiliary ribbon on said carriage, means including a line-space slide to rotate the platen, means including a slide to control the auxiliary ribbon, means including two actuatin:`
fingers to swing about a common axis. one of said fingers engaging the line-space slide, the other finger engaging the ribbon-controlling slide, and platen-shifting mechanism, said slides being shiftable relatively to 'the actuating lingers during platen-shifting operations without disturbing the co-operative relation between said slides and said fingers. i
11. In a typewriting machine, a ribbon for writing on an outside sheet, an auxiliary ribbon for writing on an inside sheet, and means for preventing the ty ing of impressions on the back of the outslde sheet by the auxiliary ribbon, said means including a flexible back-print prevention shield through which type blows may be transmitted, and clamps for demountably holding the shield in front of the auxiliary ribbon under tension, each clamp consisting of a stationary jaw around which the shield is partially bent, and a swinging resilient jaw, the swinging jaw being arranged to be swung to clamping position in rubbing engagement with the shield in a direction to assure that the shield will be held before the auxiliary ribbon under tension.
12. In a typewriting machine. a ribbon for writing on an outside sheet, an auxiliary ribbon for writing on an inside sheet, a {lexible shield extending between the auxiliary ribbon and the` outside sheet, and clamps for 'holding the shield removably in place, each clamp comprising a stationary resilient jaw around which an end of the shield is turned, and a resilient swinging jaw swing-y able into position to resiliently clamp the turned end of the shield a ainst the stationary jaw, the constructiono the clamps being lll) such that the shield may yield towards the platen under the impact of the types due to the resiliency of the clamping jaws, the tension of the shield produced by. the clamps preventing displacement of the shield and ribbon while feeding the sheets.
13. In a typewriting machine, a ribbon for writing upon an outside sheet, an auxiliar ribbon for writing upon an inside sheet,
a tending between the auxiliary ribbon and the outside sheet, and yielding means holding the ribbon shield under tension before the auxiliary ribbon to prevent displacement of the auxiliary ribbon by the feeding of the sheets and to prevent sagging forward of the auxiliary ribbon into the path of a work-sheet inserted at the front thereof, the arrangement being such that the shield although tense can yield towards the platen.
14. In a typewriting machine, a ribbon for writing on an outside sheet, an auxiliary ribbon for writing on an inside sheet, a flexible shield extending between the auxiliary ribbon and the outside sheet to prevent the typing of impressions on the back of the outside sheet, and clamps for holding the ends of the shield, each, clamp comprising a stationary U-shaped resilient member havin a supporting leg and a clamping leg re siliently connected to each other, and a )aw wedgeable into clamping relation with said clamping leg of the stationary member, the
stationary U-shaped member yielding under the forcevof the type impact to prevent an unduevtension on the shield, the wedgeable jaw being also resilient to maintain c lamping contact with the relatively stationary jaw when the latter yields under the tension of the shield.
15. In a typewriting machine including a revoluble platen, an insertion chute for4 a statement-sheet and a ledger sheet at the rear of the platen, a table for holding the rear end of a proof-sheet clear of the insertion chute, a collating table at the delivery side of the platenl for locating the statement and ledger sheets with relation to each other and to the proof-sheet, means for holding the proof-sheet stationary during the insertion and collation of the statement and ledger sheets, comprising a roll at the delivery side of the platen to press the proof-sheet against the platen, and side gages at the delivery side of the platen for locating the lproof-sheet endwise of the platen, said gages being close to said roll.
16. In a typewriting machine including a revoluble platen, an insertion chute for the statement and ledger sheets at the rear of the platen, a support for holding the rear end of a proof-sheet clear of the insertion chute, a collating frame, comprising a collating table at the delivery side of the platen exible back-print prevention shield ex-y for locatin the statement and ledger sheets with refer nce to each other and to the proof-sheet, means for holding the proof-l sheet against displacement during the insertion and collation of the Statement andledger sheets, comprising a roll on the collating frame to press the proof-sheet against the platen, and lingers extending downwardly and rearwardly from the collating frame into proximity to the platen to serve as side gages for the proof-sheet.
17. In a typewriting machine, in combination, a revoluble platen, an insertion chute for ay statement-sheet and a ledger-sheet at the rear of the platen, comprising side guides for the ledger-sheet, a front collating table having side guides for the ledger-sheet, a clamp co-operating with one of thev side guides of the front collating table and the rear insertion chute to hold the ledger-sheet stationary in writing position during adjustnient ot' the statement-sheet, and means on the rear insertion chute to prevent the accidental lifting of the ledger-sheet from between tlie side guides of the chute during adjustment of the statement-sheet.

In a typewriting machine including a revoluble platen, an insertion chute for a statement sheet and a ledger-sheet at the rear of the platen, a table for holding the `rear end of a proof-sheet clear of the insertion chute, a collatin .table at the delivery side of the platen or locating the statement and ledger sheets with relation to each other and to the proof-sheet, and means for holding the proof-sheet stationary during the insertion and collation of the statement and ledger sheets comprising a roll at the delivery side of the platen to press the proofsheet against the platen.
23. In a typewriting machine including a revoluble platen, an insertion chute for a statement-sheet and a ledger-sheet at the rear of the platen, a table for holding the rear end of a proof-sheet clear of the insertion chute, a collating table at the delivery side of the platen for locating the statement and led er sheets with relation to each other and to t e proof sheet, means for holding the proof sheet stationary during the insertion and collation of the statement and ledger sheets, and means for holding the ledger sheet stationary while the statement sheet is adjusted thereover.

In a typewriting machine including a platen, a main ribbon, an auxiliary ribbon at the front and back of which work sheets are itioned, a swingin collatin frame at the elivery side of the p aten, an means operable by the collatin frame when swung in one direction to wit draw the auxiliary ribbon a substantial distance from the laten.
25. In a typewriting machine inc uding a platen, a mam ribbon, a swingable frame carrying an auxiliary ribbon at the front and back of which work sheets are positioned, a swingable collating frame at the delivery side of the platen, and means operable by the collating frame when swinging 1n one direction to swing said ribbon-carrying frame to withdraw said auxiliary ribbon a substantial distance from the platen.
26. In a typewriting machine including a platen, a main ribbon, an auxiliary ribbon at the front and back of which Work sheets are positioned, a swingable collating frame at the delivery side of the platen, means operable b the collating frame when swin in one irection to withdraw the auxiliary ribbon a substantial distance from the platen, and means for releasably holding the ribbon in its withdrawn position.

In a typewriting machine including a platen, a main ribbon, a swingable auxiliary ribbon-carrying frame, an auxiliary ribbon at the front and back of which work sheets are positioned, and cam and lever means for swinging said ribbon-carrying frame to withdraw said auxiliary ribbon fmm the platen.
28. A machine for typing and computing items to be billed and posted, having a revoluble platen upon the front of which the ty strike, a rear insertion guide chute for ledgeser and statement sheets, a support for holding the rear end of a proof-sheet in the machine clear of the guide chute, means for holding the proof sheet to prevent accidental displacement thereof while the statement an ledger sheets are bein inserted and collated thereover, a main ribon to make a permanent record on the statement sheet, an auxiliary ribbon between the statement and the ledgler sheets to make a copy on the ledger s eet, and means for withdrawin the auxiliary ribbon a substantial distance om the platen.
29. A machine for typing and computing items to be billed and posted, having a revoluble platen upon the front of which the tyies strike, a rear insertion guide-chute for le ger and statement sheets, a collating table at the delivery side of the platen to assist in collating the statement and ledger sheets with respect to each other and to the printing point, `a ribbon to make a permanent record copy on the statement sheet, an auxiliary ribbon between the ledger sheet and the statement sheet, and means for withdrawing the auxiliary ribbon a substantial distance from the platen whereby the said sheets may be inserted without fouling the auxiliary ribbon.
30. In a typewriting machine, the combination of a revoluble platen, a main inkribbon at the front of the platen, a sheet-collating table at the delive side of the laten for a ledger-sheet and a ill-sheet to collated in the machine and withdrawn once for each single-line item typed thereon, an auxiliary ribbon to intervene between Ythe collated sheets, and means for shifting the auxiliary ribbon uilffrom printing position to an idle sheet-co ating tion above the printing line and below t collating table and spaced a trifle from the platen, to permit insertion and `adjustment on said table of a sheet between the auxiliary ribbon and the platen and of an outer sheet between the ribbons, whereby said work-sheets may relatively positioned or collated while the ribbon therebetween remains in displaced position. t
31. In a typewriting machine, the ycombination of a revoluble platen a main inkribbon at the vfront of the platen, a sheetcollatin table at the delivery side of the platen or a ledger-sheet and a bill-sheet to be collated in the machine and withdrawn once for each single-line item ty thereon, an auxiliary ribbon to rintervene tween the collated sheets, means for shifting the auxiliary ribbon up from printing position to an idle sheet-collating position above the printing line and below the collating table and spaced 'a trille from the platen, to permit insertion and adjustment on said table of a sheet between the auxiliary ribbon and the platen and of an outer sheet between the ribbons, whereby said work-sheets may be relatively positioned or collated while the ribbon therebetween remains in displaced position, and releasable means for holding the sheets stationary where collated while the auxiliary ribbon is returned to printing position.

In a typewriting machine, the combination of a revoluble platen, a main ink-ribbon at the front of the platen, a sheet-collet ing table at the delivery side of the platen for a ledger-sheet and a bill-sheet to be collated in the machine and withdrawn once for each sin le-line item typed thereon, an auxiliary ri n to intervene between the collated sheets, means for shifting the auxiliary ribbon up from printing position to an idle sheet-collating position above the printing line and below the collating table and 'spaced a trifle from the platen, te permit insertion and adjustment on said table of a sheet between the auxilia ribbon and they platen and of an outer t between 'vanced line by line relative the ribbons, whereby said work-sheets may be relatively sitioned or collated while the ribbon there tween remains in displaced position, said collating table mounted at one portion only of the platen, and means for carrying around the platen a proof-sheet of substantially greater width than said table to project laterally of said table, said auxiliary ribbon when in its raised position r mitting typing through said main rib n directly u n the projecting side margin of said proo heet.

In a typewritin machine, in combination, a main ribbon or writing on an outside statement-sheet, an auxiliary ribbon for writing upon an inside ledger-sheet, linespaci mechanism for advancin the work includin a proof-sheet behind said first-mentioned eets, said line-spacing mechanism includin a line-space lever, and an auxiliary rib n-controlling mechanism including); lever actuable to move the auxiliary rib n from writin position to a work-inserting position to acllitate the insertion of fresh statement and led er sheets at opposite sides of the ribbon, t e auxiliary ri bonshifting lever being located in proximity to the line-s ace lever so that it may be engaged an actuated at the same operation with the line-space lever or independently thereof.
34. A back-print-prevention device for a typewriting machine having a laterally-fed auxilia ribbon, said devlce includin a relative y non-inked absorbent strip stretc ed lengthwise of the platen at the prlntin line, sai strip being positioned between in vidual plies of work-sheets to be fed relatively to said strip, and resilient means to detachably hold said strip under tension in the di- 'rection of its length, so that said auxiliary ribbon will be braced thereby against sagging and the work-sheets may be readily ady to said aux' iliary ribbon.
