Description

Marh 31. 192s.
L. w. CRAFT ET AL sans Pos1 Filed .June 2, '1924 ATTORNEY WITNESS:
Patented Mar. 31, 1925.
s'rarns PATENr OFFICE.
Lewis W. emi-rrr AND WILLIAM-B. EMBURY, or `Kansas CITY, KANSAS;
GRATE Pos'r,
Application filed June 2,
To all whom t may concern.'
Be it kno-wn that we, Iinwis W. CRAFT and WILLIAM B. EMBURY, citizens of the United States, residing at Kansas City, in the county of Vyandotte and State of Kansas, have invented new and useful Improvements in Grate Posts, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to the shaking mechanism of grates and has for its object the provision of a novel grate post and shaker lever therefor so constructed and arranged that the lever cannot accidentally slip ofi from the post.
It is well known'that a great many injuries take place on all railroads due to the lever slipping from the grate post while the `fireman is in the act of shaking the grate.
It is with this fact in view that we have designed the present grate shaker post and lever so constructed that accidental disengagement will be positively prevented while at the same time the lever may be disengaged from the post easily if such is really desired at any time.
An additional object is the provision of a device of this character which will be simple and inexpensive in manufacture, easy to use, positive in action, efficient and durable in service, and a general improvement in the art.
`With the above and other objects and advantages in View, the invention consists in the details of construction to be hereinafter more fully described and claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a somewhat diagrammatic ele vation of a locomotive showing our shaker device associated with the iire-boX.
Figure 2 is a detail section through the lever showingvit engaged upon the shaker post in operative position, and
Figure 3 is a similar view showing the action in' removing the lever from the post.
Referring more particularly to the drawing, the letter A designates a locomotive having the usual lire-box within which is mounted the grate B adapted to be shaken by a lever mechanism connected therewith i by means of a link C.
In carrying out our invention we provide a shaker post 1() which is of elongated shape and which is suitably pivoted at 11 in convenient position within the locomotive cab. rhe link C above referred to is pivotally i924. seriai ne. viias".
connected with the lower end of this post shown at 12. The upper end of the post is tapered or has its opposite sides 13 Neonverging upwardly and terminating in a somewhat enlarged head 14e of such formationV as to define oppositely extending shoulders 15.
The shaker lever is designated by the numeral 16 and is of the usual elongated shape but provided at its lower end with a lateral extension 17 formed with a tapered opening 18 which corresponds to the taper of the upper end of the grate post. The narrowest dimension of this opening is very slightly greater than the greatest width of.
the head 11i so that by lifting upwardly on the lever by a straight pull it may be removed from the shaker post in an obvious manner.` However, it is a parent that when the lever is being moved liack and forth to shake the grate it will be impossible for the lever to slip off from the post accidentally inasmuch as one shoulder 15 or the other is bound to engage upon the top of the lateral extension 17 of the lever and hold these parts together positively. Actual practice has demonstrated that the device is highly satisfactory inasmuch as the non-slipping connection `is a positive assurance that the lire-man or other operator will not be injured 'by any possible slipping off.
While we have shown and described the preferred embodiment of the invention, it is to be understood that we reserve the right to make such changes in the form, construe tion and arrangement of parts as will not depart from the spirit of the invention or the scope of fthe subjoined claims.
Having thus described the invention, what we claim is 1. In combination, a grate shaker post pivoted intermediate its ends and having its lower end operatively connected with the grate to be shaken, the upper end of the post being tapered and terminating in an enlarged head defining opposed shoulders and a lever having a tapered socket conformingly fitting upon the upper end of the post, said head projecting into the socket and the shoulders preventing accidental displacement. j j
2.V In combination, a shaker post pivoted intermediate its ends and operatively connected with the grate to be shaken, the upper end of the post being tapered, its opposite sides converging upwardly and ten niinating in an enlarged head defining shoulders at opposite sides and a lever havings` its lower end provided with a lateral extension formed with a tapered opening 5 adapted to conforiningly engage upon the upper end of the post, said head projecting beyond the extension whereby the shoulders thereon Will engage upon the top of the extension and prevent Vaccidental displacement. 1o
In testimony whereof We affix our signatures.
