To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, WILLIAM L. LEONARD and JOHN E. MYERS, citizens of the United States, residing at Altoona, in the county of Blair and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Orosshead-Pins, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to jointed couplings wherein there is used a pin to hold the parts in operative relation, and has special reference to an improvement therein whereby the parts secured together may be readily taken apart for the purpose of renewals and repairs.
This invention is an improvement on the device as covered by our Patent No. 1,274,061, dated July th, 1918, and has special reference to means for withdrawing the pin from the jointed parts.
The present invention primarily relates to steam locomotives, and is designed to be used for fastening the front end of the main rod to the cross head, which is interposed be tween the main rod and the piston rod.
Actual road and roundhouse experience has pointed to the necessity of having some positive and practical means of removing the cross head pin to facilitate repairs to locomotives, and to this end the present invention contemplates novel and practical means for withdrawing the pin from the cross head through the action exerted by the lubricant filling device.

A preferred and practical embodiment of this invention is shown in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a longitudinal sectional view of the improved cross'head pin, showing how the same fits into the proper parts of the main rod and cross head, and shows in addition the manner of making the filling plug. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view of the tubular casing element of the cross head pin, the same being threaded to receive the threaded portion of the filling plug.

In carrying this present invention into effect, it is proposed to provide a tubular casing element designated by the numeral 1, which is adapted to fit into the tapered openings in the opposite members of the cross head designated by the numeral 2, while the central portion 8 is made straight and fits the front end of the main rod 4. Movement in a longitudinal direction is prevented by the taper fit of the tubular casing in the cross head, while circumferential movement is prevented by the introduction of a key 5, which'is adapted to be recessed into the tubular casing 1 and engage the cross head, as shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings.
The tubular casing 1 is further provided with a suitable lubricant discharge opening 6, through which oil escapes to the front end main rod brass.

the ends of which are designed to enter suitable sockets, 13, located on the face, 141, of the tubular casing 1.
For the purpose of keeping the lubricant within the tubular casing, 1, the central opening is provided at the end opposite the filling cap with a lubricant retaining washer, 15, which is preferably made with a taper, which fits a corresponding taper made on the interior of the pin, while a resilient washer, 16, is adapted to be interposed between the stop washer, 15, and the face, 17, of a T headed bolt, 18, which is adapted to fit into recesses, 18, made in the tubular casing, 1, for that purpose. The shank, or stem, 19, of the T headed assembling bolt is adapted to pass through a centrally located annular opening in the filling cap, which, together with a washer, 20, interposed between the face, 21, of the filling cap and the nut, 22, prevent the escape of the lubricant around the stem, 19, of the assembling bolt.
If it is desired to remove the tubular casing, 1, for the purpose of repairs or inspection, it is first necessary to remove the nut and washer of the assembling bolt, then adjust the set screws, 12, so that they no longer engage the sockets, 13. Then rotate the filling cap by the use of a hammer on the striking lug, 23, and as the face, 14, on the tubular casing, 1, approaches the face, 2d, of the filling cap the taper fit between the casing and the cross head will be broken and the tubular casing can then be readily removed for renewals or inspection.
From the above it is believed that the many advantages of the improvement described herein will be readily apparent without further elaboration and what we desire' to be secured by Letters Patent is 1. In a device of the class described the combination with the cross head parts to be pivotally connected, of a member constituting the pivot for connecting said parts, and means carried by said member and adapted to engage with one of the cross head parts when rotated to extract the said member from its operative position.

In a device of the class described, the combination with the cross head parts to be with an annular extracting ring and casing I clearance, said ring when forcibly rotatetd and engaging with a relatively fixed part of the cross head being adapted to withdraw the casing from the cross head opening.

In a device of the class described, the combination with the cross head parts tobe connected having an opening, of an apertured tubular casing fitted in said opening, a filler cap adapted to be detachably fitted to the tubular casing and provided with an extracting ring on one face thereof adapted to engagewith a fixed part of the cross head, said ring being of such a depth as to provide clearance between the face of the cap and the end of the casing when the ring initially contacts with the fixed cross head part, and a striking lug carried by the filler cap.
5. In a device of the class described, the combination with the cross head parts to be connected having an opening, of an apertured tubular casing member fitted in said opening and having interior threads at one end, a filler cap provided with a central externally threaded boss for engaging with the interior threads of the casing an eX- tracting ring carried by the cap and being of such a depth that it will engagelwith one of the fixed cross head parts before the'end of the casing abuts. with the cap, and an offset striking lug carried by the cap.
