Description

v LM Lm C. W. COCHRAN JACK OR LIFTING DEVICE Ud. M wmo Filled March 1. l19,23,
Ven for Patented @etx ld, i224.
CHARLES W. COCHRAN, OF WICHITA FALLS, TEXAS, ASSIGNOI-. TO SUPERIOR AUTO JACK CO., OF TURLEY, OKLAHOMA.
JACK on Lir'rine DEVICE.
Application filed March l, 1923. Serial No. 622,1194.
To all whom it may concern.' I
Be it known that I, CHARLES lV. COCH- RAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at 1Wichita Falls, in the county of Vilichita 6 and State of Texas, have invented new and useful Improvements in Jacks or Lifting Devices; and l do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in automobile jacks, and it is my principal object to provide a jack of this nature that will raise one wheel of a car with one stroke of the operating lever and means for holding the same in any set position.
A further object of the invention is to provide a mechanism for jacks that will render suliicient leverage to enable the lifting of one wheel of an automobile with one stroke of the operating lever.
Yet another object of my invention is to provide a jack of the character set forth that is very simple and practical and can be manufactured and sold at a very nominal cost.
With the foregoing in view, the invention resides in the novel subject matter hereinafter described and claimed, the description being supplemented by the accompanying dra'wing.
Figure l is a perspective side view.
Figure 2 is a perspective view of the lever arrangement partially sectional.
The device as illustrated comprises a flat base l, as shown in Figure l. 2 is a standard attached to the base l, preferably constructed of three pieces of Hat metal, two of said pieces of flat metal forming the outer portions of said standard, the third piece of flat metal being disposed between the two outer portions as a reinforcing spacer. 3 is a bracing member extending from the base 1 to the standard 2 in association with the center member of said standard. 4 is a lifting member having a hook on one end thereof to engage the axle of an automobile. 8 is a longitudinal aperture in the end thereof opposite the hook end, the lifting member 4 is pivoted intermediate its ends between the outer members of the standard 2 at the top thereof. 5 is an operating lever pivoted to the standard 2 as shown at 9, having a pin disposed transversely therethrough in association with the longitudinal aperture 8 of the lifting member 4. 6 is a ratchet member pivoted to the hook of the lifting memberV 4, as shown, and having ratchet association with the center portion of the standard 2. 7 is a spring clip attached to the operating lever 5, as shown, for the purpose of engaging and releasing the ratchet member 6.
In operation, the operating lever 5 is raised to the desired height to allow the hook of the lifting member 4 to engage the under side of an automobile axle, the ratchet member 6 is released from the spring clip 7 and rests on the center portion of the standard 2. lt will be noted that the transversely disposed pin in the operating lever 5 extending through the longitudinal aperture in the lifting member 4 will raise the hook end of the lifting member 4 when the operating lever 5 is lowered, thus providing a leverage means, the teeth on the ratchet member 6 will engage the top of the center portion of the standard 2 and hold the hook of the lifting member in the raised position. To lower the hook of the lifting member 4 the operating lever 5 is lowered until the spring clip 7 engages the ratchet member 6, the lifting lever 5 is then raised thus releasing the ratchet member 6 and allowing the hook of the lifting member 4 to be lowered.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is:
l. A jack of the character described comprising a standard, a lifting member pivoted near the top thereof, an operating lever' pivoted to said standard having pivot and slidable association with said lifting member.
2. A mounted standard, a lifting member pivoted intermediate its ends near the top of said standard, an operating lever pivoted to said standard having slidable connection with said lifting member and means for holding said lifting member in any set position.
SIA standard, a lifting member pivoted intermediate its ends near the top thereof yhaving a hook shaped member on one end thereof` and a'longitudinal aperture on the 5 Opposite end thereof, an operating lever pivoted to said standardhavng a pin disposed transversely therethroughv VVin association With the longitudinal aperture in said lifting member, a ratchet member pivoted to said hook shaped member having ratchet association with said standard and means for releasing said ratchet member attached to said operating lever.
CHARLES W. COCHRAN.
