RAILWAY SWITCH.

To all whom it may, concern.
Be it known that we, GLEN WHITE, BUR- LnY l "Vrnrn, and CHARLES E. CoUN'rs, citi zens of the United States, residing at Henlawson, in the county of Logan and State of WVest Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Railway Switches, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to railway switches, more particularly to switches employed in the railways used in mines and like localities, and has for its object to improve the construction, and increase the utility and efficiency of devices of this character.
With these and other objects in view the invention consists in certain novel features of construction as hereinafter shown and described and then specifically pointed out in the claims.
Figure 1 is a plan view of a portion of a conventional railway track including portions of a pair of the switch rails, with the improvement applied.
Figure 2 is an enlarged detail in section on the line 2-2 of Figure 1, looking in the direction of the arrow.
Figure 3 is a transverse section on the line 33 of Figure 2.
The improved device may be applied without material structural change to railway switches of various forms, but for the purpose of illustration is shown applied to a conventional switch structure including portions of the main line rails at 10 and 11, a portion of one of the side track rails at 12, portions of switch points or latches at 13 and let, and the throw lever mechanism as a whole at 15.
Attached by rivets 16 to the confronting faces of each of the switch rails or latches 13 is a bracket device 17, each having a laterally directed arm 18. At its outer end each of the arms 18 is directed downwardly as at 19 and thence bent into upwardly opening hook shape as at 20, the latter portion being apertured to receive a holding bolt 21. Each of the bolts 21 is headed at one end as at 22 and apertured to receive a cotter pin 23, each of the bolts also being provided with a washer 24 between the cotter pin and the adjacent face of the portion 20 of the bracket.
Extending through the depending portions 20 of the brackets is a bridle or switch bar 25, the latter coupled at one end at 26 to Serial No. 7,091.
a link 27, the link in turn connected at 28 to crank member 29 of the switch throw device 15,and apertured at spaced intervals to receive the bolts 21.
The pivot member 26 is headed as shown at 30 and apertured to receive a cotter pin 31 and likewise provided with a washer 32, as shown.
The pin 28 of the crank member 29 is apertured to receive a cotter pin 33 and pro-- vided with a bearing washer 34, as shown.
It will be noted that all the pivot elements of the improved structure are secured by spring or cotter pins, and no threads or nuts are employed, consequently all danger of the parts working loose under jars or concussions is obviated.
The improved device is simple in construc tion, can be inexpensively manufactured, and readily adapted to various forms of switches.
The preferred embodiment of the inven tion is disclosed in the drawings and set forth in the specification, but it will be understood that modifications within the scope of the claimed invention may be made in the construction without departing from the principle of the invention or sacrificing any of its advantages.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is 1. An attachment for railway switches comprising bracket devices adapted to be attached respectively to the confronting faces of switch bars and each with a laterally directed arm and each arm formed with downwardly directed and upwardly opening portion laterally apertured to receive a holding bolt, said downwardly directed portions adapted to receive the holding bolts.
2. The combination with co-acting switch bars, of a bracket device attached to each of the switch bars and each bracket device formedwith a laterally directed arm and each arm formed with downwardly directed and upwardly opening portion laterally apertured to receive a holding bolt, said downwardly directed portions adapted to receive and support a switch bar and the latter apertured to receive the holding bolts.
3. An attachment for railway switches comprising bracket devices adapted to be at tached respectively to the confronting faces of switch bars and each with a laterally directed arm and each arm formed with downwardly directed and upwardly opening portion laterally apertured, said downwardly direct-ed portions adapted to receive and support a switch bar and the latter having apertures to aline with the apertures of the depending portion of the bracket, a holding bolt extending through the alined apertures and headed at one end and apertured near the other end to receive a cotter pin, and a washer between the cotter pin, the depend- 10 ing portion of the bracket.
