Description

UNITED STATES `PATENT OFFICE.
WALTER B. NOYES, OF MANCHESTER, NEW HAMPSHIRE.
IMPROVEMENT IN SAW-GUMMERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 152,675, dated June 30, 1874; application filed June 20, 1874.
To all 101mm it may concern Be it known that I, WALTER B. NovEs, of Manchester, in the county Vof Hillsborough and State of New Hampshire, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Saw- Gummers; and I do hereby declare that the following` is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
The nature of my invention consists in the construction and arrangement of a saw-gummer, as will be hereinafter fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the-same, I will now proceed to describe its construct-ion and operation, referrin g to the annexed drawing, in which- Figure lis a longitudinal section of my sawgummer, and Fig. 2 is an inverted view `of the same.
A represents the gunnner, of semicircnlar shape, provided with a slot, a., in which the screws B B press against the sides of the saw. The slot a does not extend entirely through the gummer, but leaves a suitable portion at each end solid. In these solid ends of the gummer are placed two rods, C C, which pass through the carriage D to guide the same. A screw, E, which has its bearings in the ends of the gummer, and provided, at its rear end, with a knob or handwheel, G, is screwed through the carriage D, so that by turning said knob in either direction Athe carriage is moved either back or forth. In the lower end of the carriage D is placed a shaft, H, provided, within the carriage, with elongated cogs b b, and at one end with a crank, I.
The operator stands on the back side of the saw, turning the crank I with one hand, and at the same time feeding up the cutter attached to the carriage D by turning the knob Gr, the carriage being supported by the rods c c. The object of this is to provide a means so that the operator can see the direction the cutter is working, so as to cut on a line, and at the same time be able to remove and place the gummer on the same cutting-line, so as to prevent the working irregular forms in the teeth.
I am aware that saw-gummers having movable carriages and set-screws for holding the sawV have been used, and therefore do not claim such a device, broadly; but
HavingV thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The carriage D, constructed as described, and mounted upon the rods G C, in combination with the selnicircular slotted gummer A A and screw E, the several parts being ar` ranged as and for the purpose specified.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
VALTER B. NOYES.
