Description
W. P. TILTON. 'Device for Cutting Washers.
No. 209,726. Patented Nov. 5,1878
MPETERS, PNDT UNITED STATES PATENT. QFFIGE.
WILLIAM F. TILTON, OF MOHENRY, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF HIS RIGHT TO CHARLES A. TAYLOR, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
IMPROVEMENT IN DEVICES FOR CUTTING WASHERS.
Specification forming part'of Letters Patent No. 209,726, dated November 5, 1878; application filed September 18, 1878.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, WILLIAM F. TILToN, of
'McHenry, in the county of McHenry and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in VVasher-Outters; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification, and in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved device. Fig. 2 is a plan of the large knife or cutter, and Fig. 3 is a plan view of the small knife or cutter.
It consists in providing the slotted shank A with the male screw B for reception of the thumb-screw G, and in the construction of the large knife D with the elbow d, and in the combination and arrangement of the parts, as hereinafter more specifically set forth.
A represents the shank, which is squared at the apex thereof, as usual, for reception of a suitable handle for operating the device. The shank is provided with the screw-thread B and the vertical longitudinal slot f, wherein the knives D and G are adjustable, and rigidly secured in position by the thumb-screw O. The shank A is also provided with the sharp point 9 for piercing the material from which the washer is to be cut.
The upper knife, D, is necessarily longer.
than the lower knife, Gr, upon which it has its bearings in the slot f, and it is provided with the elbow K, which projects the blade of the knife at right angles from its handle L, as a means of placing the upper knife, D, upon a different plane from the lower one, G, whereby flexibility and facility of adjustment are practically imparted to the knives.
Thus constructed and arranged the knives do not interfere with each other in operation, but respectively and simultaneously perform the intended work.
My invention is designed as an improvement upon the patent granted to Emery Brule, of October 11, 1875, No. 168,607 and I claim, therefore, only the specific construction shown and described.
I claim In a washer-cutter, the pointed shank or knife-holder A, provided with a screw-thread and slot, as shown, in combination with knives D and G and thumb-screw 0, all arranged substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I affix my signature 'in presence of two witnesses.
WILLIAM F. TILTON.
Witnesses:
JAMES B. PERRY, M. KELJJER.
