UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
-GHARLES I. OHAFFEE, OF ALLEGAN, MIOHIGAN.
IMPROVEMENT IN GUIDES FOR-CIRCULAR SAWS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 186,541, dated January 23, 1877; application filed February 16, 1876.
To all whom it may concern: 7
Be it known that I, OHARLEs I. CHAFFEE, of Allegan in the county of Allegan, and in the State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Guides for Circular Saws; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being bad to the accompanying drawing, and to the letters-0f reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification.
The nature of my invention consists'in the construction and arrangement of a guide for circular saws, as will be'hereinatter more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, in which- Figure I is a plan viewoi' my invention.
Fig. 2 is'a longitudinal section of the same through the line a: as, Fig. 1, inverted. Fig. 3 is a cross-section through the line y y, Fig. 1. A represents the bed-plate of my saw-guide,
having a slot, (4, near each end toreceive bolts from the frame tohold it down firm, and also to adjust it to differentsized saws. Along the outer edge of the bed-plate A is a downward-projecting flange, b, to keep it always in line with the saw-frame. On the bed-plate A is formed a box, B, which forms bearings for a straight arm, 0, and an L-shaped arm, D, said arms having pins 61 d of leather, wood, horn, or other suitable material directly opposite each other. On the opposite ends of the arms 0 D are out screws 0 e,upon each of teeth of the saw at the roots of the teeth.
Then loosen the jam-nuts G, and by turning the nuts E in the slot f the arms may be moved backward and forward, as maybe wanted toadjust the saw. Then. when the guide is all right, set up thejamnuts G, which will hold all firmly in place.
By this invention the sawyer can at any time adjust the saw to a nicety, and without any danger to himself or danger of letting a Wrench slip off and'be caught by the saw.
Having thus fully described my invention,
what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is--- The combination of the adjustable bed A with box B, the screw-arms G D with points d d, the adjusting-nuts E E, and jam-nuts G G, substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth,
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 3d day of February, 1876.
CHARLES I. GHAFFEE.
