GEORGE W. D. UPTON, OF SPRINGFIELD, MASSACHUSETTS.
COMBINED, TOBACCO CUTTER AND SHAVER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 313,259, dated March 3, 1885.
Application filed July 5, 1883. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, GEORGE W. D. UPTON, of Springfield, in the county of Hampden, in the State of Massachusetts, have invented new and useful Improvements in a Combined Tobacco Gutter and Shaver, of which the following is a specification.
Myinvention has relation to improvements in devices for cutting and shaving tobacco, the object being to provide an improved tool for the purpose named, which is durable and simple in construction and reliable in operation. My improved device is hereinafterfully described, and clearly demonstrated in the accompanying drawings, and the novelty claimed as required by statute.
In the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, Figure 1 is a side elevation of the device. andFig. 2 is a sectional end view taken through the line as x of Fig. 1.
The letter 0 represents the bed frame or stand, provided with suitable means, substantially as shown, for sustaining it in position, and is formed or provided with standards .0 c at each end, which standards are formed with perforations to serve as journal-bearings for the respective levers. In the upper face of the bed-frame c, as seen at i, is formed a shelf or board seat against which or on which the cutting-knife bears or lands.
The letter 12 represents the cutting-lever, formed with a knife-seat in which the cuttingknife d is secured by screws or otherwise. The lever is also formed with a shelf or board seat, b, on its upper face, in which or on which the board or shelf h is detachably and adjust ably secured, and against this seat the shaving-blade e bears in operation. The lever b is pivotally secured in the bearings in the standard a" of the bed-frame, and the free end is formed with a rack or teeth, 9, for the purpose hereinafter stated.
The letter a represents the operating-lever, formed with the knife-frame d, in which is adjustably secured the shaving-knife 6. This lever is pivotally secured in the standard (1 at e, and has a segmental rack, f. on the inner side of the end extension, which engages with the rack or gear on the lever b, and by this connection operates the latter.
I am aware that a tobacco cutter and shaver has been made in which the cutting knife and the shaving-blade are carried in the hand-lever; and I am also aware that a cutter has been made which is formed and arranged to compress corks between the adjacent surfaces of the hand-lever and the intermediate lever, the mechanical arrangement of the bed and levers being like that shown in my'improved device I therefore make no claim to the combination or constructions in said cited devices.
\Vhat I claim is The improved tobacco cutter and shaver herein described, consisting of a bed or frame, 0, formed with a knife Led or sheltl 'i, and lever-bearings at each end, the leverh, pivotally secured in the bearings at a", and formed with a knife-seat carrying the knife (Z in its lower side, and also formed with a shelf or board seat in the upper part, provided with a detachable and adjustable shelf or plate, h, and
the lever a, pivotally secured to the frame at e, and formed with a knife-frame, (1', provided with a knife or shaver, 6, said levers being operatively connected by gearing, as shown, all combined substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
GEORGE IV. D. UPTON.
