UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.

" or QUINCY, MASSACHUSETTS.
CAST-OFF FOR GARTERS.
Application filed April 17, 1923. Serial No. 632,658.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, JOHN H. Poona, a citizen of the United States, residing at Stoughton, in the county of Norfolk and State of lt lassachusetts, have invented new and useful Improvements in Cast-Otis tor Garters, of which the following is a specification. i
This invention relates to a garter which includes a legencircling strap, usually of elastic webbing, having a stud member at one end portion and acast-oii' at the opposite end portion, adapted to detachably engage the stud member and connect the end portions with each other. The stud mem ber' is located midway between the opposite edges of the strap, and the cast-oil has a slotwhich is of greater length than the width of the strap and receives a bight or loop of the strap, the cast-oil being provided between its ends with a central ear having anopening adapted to detachably engage the stud member, the arrangement being such that the cast-oft is adapted to swing or turn on the stud member, so that the meeting ends of the strap may be lower on the leg than the major portion of the strap when the garteris in use.
Heretofore the stud member-engaging ,openingin thecast-ofi car has been a slot,
the margin of which is rigid and loosely engages the stud member without exerting a yielding, grasping pressure thereon, so that the strap ends are liable to be accidentally detached from each other, and permit the garter to drop.
My invention has for its object to enable the opening in the cast-0H ear to yieldingly grasp the stud member and thus prevent liability of accidental detachment of the strap ends from each other.
I accomplishthis object by providing the cast-oil ear with an enlarged opening, and inseparably securing to the ear a socket member extending through the opening, and
adapted to yieldingly grasp the stud member, said members being the, stud and socket members of a snap fastener of any suitable type.
The cast-ofi is adapted to be conveniently manipulated to tip the socket member and thus disengage it from the stud member.
Of the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification,-
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a stocking-supporting garter including a cast-off embodying the invention.
Figure 2 is a fragmentary view showing the end portion of the strap to which the stud member is attached.
Figure 3 is a side view on an enlarged scale, of the main portion of the cast-ofl' withoutthe socket member.
Figure 4 shows the main portion and the socket member assembled.
a Figure 5 is a section on line 55 of Figure 4.
Figure 6 is an edge View of the portion shown by Figure 2.
Figure 7 is a transverse section of the cast-off.
Figure 8 is a side view of the tubular portion of the socket member as it appears before engagement with the ear on the main portion of the cast-oft and with the head portion of the socket member.
Figure 9 is a sectional View of the head portion of the socket member, before engagement with the tubular portion.
Figure 10 is a view similar to Figure 3, showing a modification.
The same reference characters indicate the same parts in all of the figures.
12 represents the leg-encircling strap of a garter which in this instance, has a looped 35 end portion 12*, carrying a stud member 13, and a looped end portion 12 engaged with the cast-off next described. Said cast-off includes a main portion adapted to engage the looped portion 12, and a socket member complemental to the stud member 13, and inseparably connected with the main portion.
The main portion of the cast-ofi may be made either of sheet metal or wire, and as here shown, is made of sheet metal. Said main portion includes a body 14, having a slot 15, which engages the end portion 12 of the strap as shown by Figure l, and an ear 16, projecting from one edge of the body, midway between the ends thereof. The ear is provided with an opening which, as shown by Figures 3, 5 and 7, is a slot joining the slot 15 and having a curved portion 17, and a contracted portion 18. The opening shown by Figure 10 is a circular orifice 19.
The stud member 13 has a substantially spherical head, connected by a neck 13 with an attaching base, as usual in a snap or studandsocket fastener.
The, abovementioned ,socket .member is complemental to the stud member, and
adapted to yieldingly grasp the latter. The
socket member here shown is of a Well known. type and comprises a tubular portion 2O having a closed end 21, and provided at the opposite end with a flange 22. socket member also comprises a hollow head portion 23, having an opening 24 (Figure 9) adapted to receive the closed end of the tubular portion. The flange 22 and tubular portion 20 are provided with slits or slots '25, extending from the margin of the flange nearly to the closed end 21.
The tubular portion is inserted in the ear opening 17 or 19, 'until the flange 22 is seated on one side of the ear. The head 23 is then placed on .the closed end, and the parts are subjected to pressure to distort the tubular portion, as shown by Figure 5. This operation engages the head portion withthe tubular portion, and seats the head portion .on the opposite side of the cast-oil ear. It also expands the wall of thetubular portion into close engagement with the margin of the ear opening, so that the socket member constitutes an inseparable part or member of the cast-off.
By fixing a socket member to the main portion of a cast-ofi as above described, I
accomplish two results, viz, first, the castoil includes .with an expansible and automatically contractible opening or socket wall adapted to'yieldingly grasp the stud member, so that a considerable de ree of force is required to separate the end portions of @thestrap from each other, and secondly,
The r I am not limited to the particular socket member construction here shown.
I claim:
1. For use as an element of a garter which includes a leg-encircling strap having at one end portion a stud member, and at the opposite end portion a loop; a cast-off composed of a body having an elon ated slot corresponding in length to the wi th of the strap, the inner edge portion of said body being adapted to engage said loop, an ear projecting from the outer edge of the body midway between the ends thereof and provided with anopening, and a socket member fixed in said o ening and adapted to yieldingly engage said stud member, the socket member constituting an inseparable part of the cast-off, the arrangement being such that the socket member may be disengaged from the stud member by a tripping movement 2. As an article of manufacture, a studmember-engaging cast-off for garters, composed of a slotted body, adapted to engage one end of a leg-encircling strap, an ear projecting from one edge of the body centrally of the latter, and )rovided with an opening,
and a socket mem er composed of aslotted signature. v
