3. WULLUM GUFF BUTTON Filed Feb E 16, 1925 G'. WULLUM Y Mw( ATTORNEYS Patented Dec. 8, 1925.
GERHARD WULLUM, 0F CHICAGO, ILLINOS.
CUFF BUTTON.
Application led February 1G, 1925.
To all zo/0m t may concern:
Be it known that I, GERHARD VVULLUM, a citizen of the United. States, and a resident of Chicago, county of Cook, and State of lllinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Cuff Buttons, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to improvements in cuff buttons and particularly that type having two cooperating parts which are intended for separation and engagement with one another at will, and it consists in the combinations, constructions, and arrangements herein described and claimed.
An object of my invention is to provide a cufll button of the character described in which the cooperating' parts when pressed together become engaged, and which must be pressed together to release the parts. The parts may not be disengaged by pulling them apart as in the ordinary construction.
A further object of my invention is to provide a cuff button of the character described in which the flexible or moving parts are entirely encased.
A further object of my invention is to provide a cull button of the character described in which particularly novel means is employed for causing the cooperating members to become released from one another when pressed toward each other.
A further object of my invention is to provide a cuff button of the character described which is simple in construction, durable and thoroughly practical for the purpose intended.
Other objects and advantages will appear in the following specification, and the novel features of the invention will be particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
My invention is illustrated in the aecompanying drawings, forming part of this application, in which- Figure l is an enlarged view of my improved cuff button, a part thereof in sec-` tion,
Figure 2 is a view of the device shown in Figure l with the co-operating parts engaged, and
Figure 3 is a view of the device shown 1n Figure l with the parts in position for disengagement.
In carrying out my invention I malte use of two cooperating parts A and B. These Serial No. 9,586.
parts have the outward appearance of the ordinary separable cuff button, the part A being constructed to be received in the button hole at one side of the cuff of a shirt, and the part B being constructed to be received in a button hole in the opposite side of a cuff. My invention consists in novel mechanism for engaging and permitting the disengagement of the parts A and B with one another.
The part A Jis provided with a substantially conical tongue portion l having a shoulder 2 extending entirely around the tongue intermediate its length, thus separating the tongue into a body portion and a head portion 8 whereby the tongue l is substantially rigid in construction and securely fixed in any suitable manner to the part A.
The part B is constructed, as reference to Figure l will show, of sheet metal and ha. the same outward contour of the part A. This structure provides a hollow portion t on the interior of the member B which is enlarged at by the provision of a radially extending iiange portion 6 formed on the body portion of the part B. This construetion is also found in part A.
A resilient metal sleeve 7 is partially received within the hollow portion 4c and is constructed with a radially extending vflange 8 adjacent to its upper end 9. The flange 8 is adapted to extend within the enlarged portion 5 of the hollow portion iand therefore serves to limit longitudinal movement of the sleeve 7.
The sleeve 7 has a pair of diametrically opposed inwardly extending tooth members Owhich are adapted to engage with the shoulder 2 of the tongue l when the tongue is projected within the sleeve 7, and to securely hold the tongue against unintentional withdrawal from the sleeve.
Means for disengaging the teeth l() from the shoulder 2 of the tongue is projected in a resilient metal knob ll secured at 12 to the innermost end wall of the hollow portion 4.
From an inspection of the part B in Figure l it will be noted that the sleeve 7 has several longitudinally extending slits 13 therein, thereby permitting the spreading of adjacent portions of the sleeve outwardly at their lowermost end when the sleeve 7 is forced downwardly upon the knob 1l (scc Figure 3).
icoA
rihe liexible knob ll has slits let therein so that it may be separated as by engagement of the tongue portion il therewith (see Figure but so that it may not be constructed as by engagement of the lowermost end l5 of the sleeve 7. It is therefore apparent that the tongue l may be forced downwardly until the sleeve 7, which must move therewith by virtue of engagement of the end 9 with the flange (i, has spread sutiicientiy at its lowermost end i5 to cause the teeth i() to disengage from the shoulder 2 of the tongue so that the parts A. and B may be separated.
From the foregoing description of the various parts of the device the operation thereof may be readily understood. The parts A, and li are inserted in the cull' of the shirt sleeve in precisely the same manner as the ordinary type of separable cuit' link, whereupon the tongue .l is projected into the sleeve 'i' of the part B sufiiciently far 'to permit 'the teeth l0 to engage with the shoulder 2 thereof. The resilient property of the sleeve permits the head portion 23 of the tongue to be passed beyond the work engaging portion of the teeth l of the sleeve easily, so that the engaging of the cooperating parts ri and B may be accomplished with little ei'l'ort.
tiny attempt to move the partsl )i and li apart from one another at this time will be unsuccessful due to the fact that the teeth l() securely lock the tongue l from withdrawal from the sleeve.
ln order to separate the parts A and il as in opening the shirt cuff, the wearer will force the parts A and B toward one another as shown in Figure 3, thus causing the flange 6 to engage with the end 9 of the sleeve 7 and the sleeve will move inwardly of the hollow body portion fi in such a manner as to lcause its lower end l to spread by engagement with the knob il, This causes the teeth i() to assume the position shown in iigure and permits the disengagement of the tongue il therefrom. rlhus the tongue is releaed from ei'igagement with the teeth and the parts A. and B may be separated with ease.
While l have shown a cuil' button, it will be understood that the construction might be applied to buttons for other uses, such as for buttoning curtains or the like.
l claim:
l. A enti' button of the character described comprising al pair of cooperating parts each adapted to be secured to the cull of the garment or the like, a tongue carried by one of said part-s extending longitudinally therefrom on the axis of said part, a sleeve slidably disposed partially within the other of said parts and concentric with the axis thereof, said sleeve being expandable at its innermost end and having teeth project ing inwardly therefrom for engagement with said tongue on said first named part when said tongue is projected within the said sleeve, and means associated with each of said parts for spreading said sleeve thereby moving said teeth out of engagement with said tongue when said first and second named part-s are forced toward one another.
2. A cuff button of the character described comprising a. pair of cooperating parts each constructed for engagement with the cuff of a garment, and means associated with said parts for engaging said parts one with the other, whereby said parts may not be pulled apart, and whereby said parts are :tree from engagement with one another when pressed toward one another, said means including a tongue carried by one of said parts, and a toothed sleeve carried by the other of said parts, said toothed sleeve being slidably disposed on its associate part and having a portion thereof projecting therefrom and extending 'toward the complementary part whereby movement of said sleeve inwardly of its associate part will disengage the tongue.
3. A cuff button of the character described comprising a pair of cooperating parts each constructed for engagement with the cuff of a garment, means associated with said parts for engaging said parts one with the other, whereby said parts may not be pulled apart, and whereby said parts are free from engagement with one another when pressed toward one another, said means including a tongue carried by one of said parts, and a. toothed sleeve (,-arried by the other of said parts, said toothed sleewuVx being slidably disposed on its associate pari, and having a portion thereof pro jeeting 'therefrom and extending toward the complementary part, whereby movement of said sleeve inwardly of its associate part will disengage the tongue, and other means disposed within said last named part for yiel lingly opposing the movement of said tongue inwardly of the sleeve.
