Be it known that we, DANIEL L. CHAND- LER and JOHN H. TRAYNE, citizens of the United States, residing, respectively, at
i Ayer and Groton, in the county of Middlesex.and State of Massachusetts, have in vented new and useful Improvements in Lighters, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a device for setting fire to combustible articles, such. for example, as cigars, cigarettes and the like.
The object of the invention is to provide a device of the character set forth which is capable of containing a large number of like articles which may be ignited by friction, said device having-means contained therein capable of holding one of said articles while it is being ignited by friction and while it is burning.
The object of the invention is further to provide a neat, convenient and durable device for the purpose set forth in which the combustible articles can be renewed from time to time as becomes necessary, which is compact and which is free from danger of accidental ignition. p
In practical operation the articles which are adapted to be ignited by friction are so formed in the shape of small pellets consisting of a shell composed of material adapted to be ignited by friction and a core of combustible material, preferably cotton saturated with paraffin and compressed. This article itself forms the subject matter of a separate application made by us of even date herewith.
The invention consists in the combination and arrangement of parts'set forth in the following specification and particularly pointed out in the claims thereof.
Referring to the drawings: Figure 1 is a side elevation of our improved lighter. Fig. 2 is a sectional elevation taken on line 2-2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a sectional elevation similar to Fig. 2 showing the parts in changed positions relatively to each other. Fig. 4 is an underneath plan of said device. Fig. 5 is a sectional elevation taken on line 5-5 of Fig. -2. Fig. 6 is a sectional plan 7 taken on line 6-6 of "Fig. 3. Fig. 7 is a sectional plan taken on line 7-7 of Fig. 3. In the drawings, 10 is a casing having a cover 11 hinged thereto at 12 and provided with a catch 13 punched out of one end 14 of said cover and adapted to spring into a'recess 15 in said casing to hold the cover in a closed position. The pellets 16 are contained in a serpentine raceway 17 provided in a container 18 which may be of any suitable material, such as cardboard.
A holder 19 is slidably mounted in the casing 10, the outer end of said holder being provided with a head 20 and the inner end 21 of said holder terminating adjacent to an opening"- 22 which leads from the raceway 17 into a chamber 23. Said chamber is provided in the casing 10 and in an extension 24 of said casing. The extreme end 25 of said extension 24 forms a stop and adjacent to said stop are openings 26 and 27, and a tubular cap 24 incloses the extension 24 when the device is not in use.
A friction member 28 is provided with a tooth 29 arranged to engage a recess 30 in one side of the holder 19. A spring 31 fastened at one end thereof to the friction member 28 and at the other end thereof to the casing 10 acts to pull the friction member toward the upper end of the easing into the position illustrated in Fig. 2. The lower end of said friction member is provided with a plate 32 which is made of suitable material so that when it is rubbed against one of the pellets 16 it will cause the same to ignite. This plate is removable and can be replaced by other plates 32 which are held for convenience in a chamber 33 provided in the upper end of the casing 10 and separated from the container 18 by a partition 34 provided in said casing. A spring 35 presses the friction member 28 toward the holder 19 and normally holds said parts in the position illustrated in Fig. 2 with the tooth 29 projecting into the recess 30. A pin 36 projects through a slot 37 provided in the friction member 28 and acts asa stop for said friction member when the parts are in the position illustrated in Fig. 2, thus limiting the distance to which the friction member can be moved upwardly in the casing by the spring 31. j
A cam 38 is provided in the casing 10 and extends across said casing between the friction member 28 and the holder 19, the same having an inclined face 39 which is adapted to be engaged by the inclined face 40 on the tooth 29 so that when the holder 19 is pushed downwardly in the casing 10 from the position shown in Fig. 2 to the position shown in Fig. 3 it will be seen that the friction member 28 will be carried along with said holder by means of the tooth 29 which at that time projects into the recess 30. Then as the holder is pushed forward these two parts move together and one of the pellets 16 (Fig. 2) which at that time lies in the chamber 23 is pushed forward or downwardly to the end of the chamber 23 and against the stop 25 where'it is held station ary by the holder 19. Just at the time when the holder 19 has pushed the pellet 16 against the stop 25 the inclined face 40 of the tooth 29 on said friction member will have engaged the inclined face 39 on the cam 38 and by the final downward movement of the holder 19the friction member will become disengaged from the holder 19 and will be drawn backwardly from the position illustrated inrFig. 3 to that illustrated in Fig. 2, thus causingthe friction plate 32 to be drawn across the pellet 16, which, being firmly held between the holder 19 and the stop 25, will be ignited by said friction and will burn for a sufficient length of time to light a cigar, cigarette, or such other combustible material as may be desired.
In order to hold the pellet 16 in position for the holder 19 to move it along the chamber 23, as hereinbefore described, a stop 41 is provided which normally projects slightly into the chamber 23 and is yieldingly held in that position by a spring 42 which bears at one end against the stop 41 and at the other end against an adjusting screw 43.
The holder 19 is guided in a tubular shaped guide 45 and has a pin 46 fast there to and projectinginto a slot 47 provided in said tubular guide 45, so that the holder 19 is at all times held by said pin 46 projecting into said slot 47 against rotation and the consequent displacement of the recess '30 relatively to the tooth 29.
The general operation of the device hereinbefore specifically described is as follows: The container 18 filled with pellets 16 is placed in the casing 10 and the cover 11 is closed, the parts all then being in the relative positions illustrated in Fig. 2. The cap 24 is removed and the user of the device then pushes downon the holder 19 and feeds one of the pellets 16 which has entered the chamber 23 from the raceway 17 to the container 18 past the stop 41 downwardly in the chamber 23 against the stop'25. At that timethe friction member28 is released, as hereinbefore described, and the friction plate 32 causes the'pellet 16 which is held between the end 21 of the holder 19 and the stop 25 to become ignited, said friction member returning from the position shown in Fig. 3 to the positionshown in Fig. 2. Having thus described our invention, what we cla1m and desire by- Letters Patent to secure is:

3. A lighter having, in combination, a casing, a holder for a pellet slidable on said casing, a friction member arranged to contact with a pellet while said pellet is positioned by said holder, means on said friction member constructed and arranged to engage said holder, whereby both holder and friction means may be moved on said casing together, means arranged to disengage said friction member from said holder and means arranged to move said friction member relatively to said holder after said friction member has been disengaged therefrom, whereby a pellet having an exterior surface composed of material adapted to be ignited by friction may be ignited.
4. A lighter having, in combination, a casing, a holder for a pellet slidable on said casing, a friction member arranged to contact with a pellet while said pellet is positioned by said holder, a tooth on said friction member constructed and arranged to project into a recess in said holder, whereby both holder and friction member may be moved on said casing together, means on said casing arranged to disengage said tooth from said recess and a spring arranged to move said friction member relatively to said holder after said friction member has been disengaged therefrom, whereby a pellet provided with an exterior surface adapted to be ignited by friction may be ignited.
5. A lighter having, in combination, a casing having a chamber adapted to con tain a pellet, a holder for said pellet slidable on said casing into said chamber, a stop at one end of said chamber, there being an opening into said chamber adjacent to said stop, whereby said pellet may be moved by said holder along said chamber and held against said stop, a friction member arranged to contact with said pellet while so held and movable by said holder in one direction and independently of said holder in the opposite direction, whereby a pellet having an exterior surface composed of inflammable material may be ignited.
6. A lighter having, in combination, a casing having a chamber adapted to contain a pellet, a raceway in said casing opening into said chamber and capable of holding a plurality of pellets, a holder for one of said pellets slidable on said casing in said chamber and a friction member arranged to contact with one of said pellets while said pellet is positioned by said holder, said friction member being movable by said holder in one direction and independently of said holder in the opposite direction, whereby said pellet may be ignited.
7. A lighter having, in combination, a casing having a chamber adapted to contain a pellet, a container in said casing opening into said chamber and capable of holding a plurality of pellets, said chamber having a second opening thereinto, a holder for one of said pellets slidable on said casing in said chamber and constructed and arranged to transfer a pellet from said container opening to said second opening and a friction member arranged to contact with one of said pellets while said pellet is positioned by said holder at said second opening, said friction member being movable longitudinally. and laterally relatively to said holder, whereby said pellet may be ignited.
8. A lighter having, in combination, a casing having a chamber adapted to contain a pellet, a raceway in said casing having an opening into said chamber and capable of holding a plurality of pellets, said chamber having a second opening thereinto, a yield ingly arranged stop arranged to project into said chamber adjacent to said raceway opening, a holder for one of said pellets slidable on said casing in said chamber and constructed and arranged to transfer a pellet from said raceway opening to said second opening, said stop adapted to be pushed outof said chamber by said pellet and a friction member arranged to contact with one of said pellets while said pellet is positioned by said holder at said second opening, said friction member being movable longitudinally and laterally relatively to said holder and easing whereby said pellet may be ignited.
