AUTOMOBILE DOOR OPENER Filed May 19. 192] awuentoz Patented July 3, 1923.
CHARLIE J. SMITH, JR., OF HENDERSON, NORTH CAROLINA.
AUTOMOBILE DOOR OPENER.
Application filed May 19, 1921.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLIE J. SMITH, Jr. a citizen of the United States, residing at l-Ienderson, in the county of Vance and State of North Carolina, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Automobile Door Openers; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in automobile door opening devices and more particularly to a novel article for application to the usual automobile door for the purpose of releasin the door latch from the exterior of the body, the device being intended for use on machines in which the releasing lever of the door is located at the inner side of the latter and usually in a rather inaccessible position, particularly when it is to be operated from the outside of the car.
The object of the invention is to' provide an extremely simple and inexpensive yet a highly eflicient and reliable device or releasing the latch in the manner above set forth, the construction being such that the invention ma be applied to numerous makes of automobi es, without necessitating any changes in their usual construction.
With the foregoing in view, the invention resides in the novel construction and association of parts hereinafter described and claimed, t e descriptive matter being supplemented by the accompanying drawing, in which a perspective view of my invention is shown applied to a common form of automobile door and latchj In the drawin above briefly described, the numeral 1 designates a common form of automobile door havin a projectable and retractable latch 2 whic is provided with a releasin lever 3 disposed at the inner side of the oor, it being the intention of my invention to provide a novel device for releasing the latch lever without the necessity of reachin over the door this being of particular a vantage whenthe side curtains are applied to the machine or when the latter is equipped with one of the numerous forms of enclosed tops.
The numeral'4 designates a bearin having oppositely extending flan es 5 a apted to rest on the upper edge of t e door 1 and to be secured thereto by screws 6 so that the Serial No. 471,006,
bearing extends transversely of the door. Rockably received in the bearing 4, is a rock-shaft 7 whose inner end is bent downwardly to provide a crank arm 8 whose lower end is adapted to en age the lever 3, said end being preferably bent laterally as shown at 9 and provided with an anti-friction roller 10. The outer end of shaft 7 is bent downwardly to form an ope-ratin arm 11 which is provided at its lower on with an appropriate hand grip 12. By graspin the grip 12 and moving it in the required manner, the shaft 7 and arm 8 are operated so as to swing the latch lever 3 to released position, permitting the door to be opened. My attachment does not interfere with the operation of the lever 3 from the interior of the car.
From the foregoing taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, it will be seen that I have produced an extremely simple and inexpensive device for carrying out the object of the invention, yet that this device will be highly efiicient and desirable.
Since excellent results may be obtained from the details disclosed, they may be followed if desired, but it is to be understood that within the scope of the invention as claimed, numerous minor changes may be made.
I claim;
The combination with an automobile door havin a latch provided with an u standing releasmg lever at the inner side 0 the door, of an abutment secured upon the inner face of the door adjacent the upper end of said lever, a bearing secured upon the upper edge of the door and extending transversely thereof, a rod extending through the bearing and having its end portions bent to provide a rocker shaft journaled in the bearing and extending beyond the inner and outer sides of the door and arms extending in depending relation from the ends of the rocker shaft, the inner arm extending between the abutment and the upper end portion of said lever and having its free end portion bent to extend transversely of the lever, a roller upon the bent end portion of the inner arm and engagin said lever, the outer arm of said rocker s aft constituting an actuating arm for turning the rocker shaft and swinging the inner arm to move the lever to a latch-releasing position.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set to hand.
