FOLDING HANDLE Filed May 7, 1957 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 In venior A tiorneys Patented Nov. 22, 1938 UNITED STATES PATENT @FFlCE FOLDING HANDLE Poughkeepsie, N. Y.
Application May 7, 1937, Serial No. 141,335
1 Claim.
This invention relates to a folding handle for use in automobiles and other places, the general object of the invention being to provide a handle which can be folded out of the way when not in use so that one will not injure himself by being thrown against the handle or striking the same.
This invention also consists in certain other features of construction and in the combination and arrangement of several parts, to be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and specifically pointed out in the appended claim.
In describing the invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters denote like or corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which:-
Figure 1 is a fragmentary elevation showing the invention in use on a part of an automobile for turning a shaft of the automobile.
Figure 2 is a section on the line 22 of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a section on the line 3-3 of Fig ure 1.
Figure 4 is a section on the line 4-4 of Figure 3.
Figure 5 is a section on the line ure 1 with all the bracket member.
Figure 6 is a view of the inner end of said bracket member.
Figure 7 is a view of the spring washer.
The drawings show the invention associated with the handle used for turning a shaft which may be the window operating shaft of an automobile, though it will be understood that the invention can be used wherever it is desired to provide a handle which can be folded out of the way when not in use.
In these drawings the letter A indicates a body through which passes the shaft B which is to be rotated and as before stated this shaft may be one used for raising or lowering the window of an automobile.
55 of Figparts omitted excepting the In carrying out my invention I provide a bracket member I which has its head formed with spaced ears between which the inner end of the handle C is pivoted by means of the bolt or screw 2. The bracket member is formed with a sock- .eted reduced part I which is rotatably arranged in a part of the body A and is formed with the non-circular socket 2 for receiving the end of the shaft B, the member I being connected with the shaft by a screw 3. A washer H) is placed between the member I and the body A. Y
A spring washer 4 is placed in a recess 5 formed in the inner face of one ear of the bracket member and is curved to engage the recesses 6 in the handle 0, the spring acting to hold the handle in either folded or open position and the screw 2 passes through the spring.
The handle 0 is curved as shown so that when in closed position it will be located a slight distance from the body A so that it can be grasped and swung to open position as shown in dotted lines in Figure 2. The free end of the handle is provided with a substantially right angularly extending part which is reduced to receive the rotary portion i which is held in position by the screw 8. As will be seen these parts are so arranged that when the handle is in the open position shown in dotted lines in Figure 2 this member 1 can be readily grasped to turn the handle to rotate the shaft B. A slightly arcuateshaped socket member 9 is pressed in the recess formed in the body A, shown in Figures 1 and 2,
to receive the free end of the handle memberwhen the same is in closed position.
From the foregoing it will be seen that when the handle is in folded position there are no projections to catch in the clothing of persons or to injure persons when they are thrown against the parts by a collision or the like. When the handle is to be used it is simply necessary to take hold of the same and swing it from the full line position to the dotted line position and then by grasping the member 7 the handle can be turned to rotate the shaft. The spring 4 holds the handle in either one of its two positions.
It is thought from the foregoing description that the advantages and novel features of the invention will be readily apparent.
It is to be understood that changes may be made in the construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, provided that such changes fall Within the scope of the appended claim.
What is claimed is:-
In combination with a rotary shaft and a member in which the shaft rotates, a bracket member connected with one end of the shaft and provided with a pair of spaced ears, one ear having a recess in its inner face, an elongated handle member having one end arranged between the ears, a pivot pin passing through the ears and said end of the handle, a curved spring plate located in the recess and through which the pivot pin passes, the pivoted end of the handle member having a pair of recesses therein between which the pivot pin passes for receiving a portion of the spring plate to hold the handle in either one of two positions, a rotary hand engaging part extending at substantially right angles from the free end of the handle member and an armate socket member receiving the hand engaging part when the handle is in inoperative position.
